We’ve all heard about them and have likely done at least one, if not one every three months. They’re heralded as a ‘reset’, a way to jump start results – a ‘detox’ of sorts. They definitely have their appeal and can be useful – but many times they wind up being just another quick fix. Yep, we’re talking about the infamous 30-day Paleo challenges (also known as Whole30, Clean Eating Challenge, 30-day Detox and/or Sugar Detox). When used as a tool to revamp nutrition and lifestyle behaviors for good, they have their merits; unfortunately that’s not what usually happens. It’s more of an “I need to do a clean 30 days to get ready for (insert event of choice here)” or the holidays are coming I need to be strict now so I can ‘eat like an @$$hole’ next month, or the holidays are over and the only pants that fit are the sweat kind… Yeah, more often than not, these 30 day challenges are being used as competitions and quick fixes. The cycle goes – Whole30 in January; resume ‘regular eating’ February through April; Whole30 in May (to prepare for summer); resume regular eating June-September; Whole30 in October to prepare for the holidays; eat like an @$$hole in November and December and then start all over again next year…
It’s 30 days of strict rules followed by the day 31,32,33,34… mayhem. Many times it’s the perfect set up for what feels like failure when it’s all over. Well, what if there was a better way? What if it wasn’t rooted in all or nothing thinking? What if there wasn’t a ‘day 31’? Folks – you needn’t wonder anymore because there’s a NEW and IMPROVED 30-day challenge coming at ya!
First a little back story on how this whole idea was hatched. I recently did a nutrition seminar for CrossFit Twin Cities (a totally AWESOME bunch!). In preparation for the seminar, Coach Joe Cebula said that they would like to kick off a 30-day challenge following my visit and asked if I had any ideas on how to set that up. Given my general thoughts on the 30-day challenge approach and how I’ve seen it end SO MANY TIMES, I was pretty sure we needed to come up with a new way of doing things. And so it was born – Instead of a traditional 30-day challenge, I proposed we do a “30 Challenges in 30 Days” program. Every day a new ‘small challenge’ would be issued along with an “Amy’s Two-Second Takeaway” (which is just a quick tip or words of INFINITE wisdom to help you through). The idea behind this approach is that by making small, daily changes things won’t seem so daunting and at the end of it all you’ll walk away with some new ideas and behaviors without a major fall-out. The CF Twin Cities folks were onboard with the idea and Robb didn’t think it was too shabby either. So, we’re rolling it out for all of you too! Every day for the next 30 days, there will be a new challenge and Two-Second Takeaway posted on the blog and sent out in the newsletter – just for you!
The NEW and IMPROVED 30-Day Challenge has arrived! Who’s gonna take it?
Here’s your first challenge:
Day 1
Challenge: CLEAN IT OUT!! Start fresh – it’s time to cut the crap. Get rid of everything in your kitchen that’s packaged, processed, sugar heavy and that is a ‘danger food’ for you. Don’t forget the condiments – ketchup, BBQ sauce, salad dressings, etc. If this stuff isn’t in your house you’re less likely to ‘fall-off’ the wagon.
Amy’s Two-Second Takeaway: Get the crap out of your house! If it’s not there, you can’t eat it in a moment of weakness. If you’re going to have a treat or eat off plan – do it away from home. Don’t bring anything through the door that may become a problem later.
