Howdy Folks!
I hope y’all are doing well, all is good with the Wolf family. Zoe is screaming towards three years old and Sagan is seven months old! It’s. Been. A. Blur.
Lots of great developments which I’ll share in the coming weeks. The City Zero program is ever closer to release. This has been my primary focus for the better part of two years…lots of work, but we are getting close.
Today I want to share a fantastic new company with you called Thrive Market. Thrive Market is a socially conscious (I’ll talk about this in a moment) online marketplace that gives members access to thousands of organic and natural products ranging from food, to supplements to bath and beauty products, all at 25%-50% off retail. If Costco and Wholefoods got liquored up at a rave and had a kid, it would look a lot like Thrive Market.
How it Works
Folks sign up for a membership that is less than $5/month ($59.95 annually) then they can shop the thousands of products offered at Thrive, place an order, and receive that order right to the door. Orders larger than $49 receive FREE SHIPPING! Currently the free shipping applies only to the continental US—Thrive is not yet doing international orders, but I’ll update you when this becomes available.
Social Mission, Sustainability and other Dirt-Worshipping Hippy stuff
I’ll talk more about my involvement with Thrive Market in a moment, but if you follow my ramblings at all, you know that the sustainability story is very important to me. Thrive appealed to me for a number of reasons beyond that “gimme” of providing access to great products at 25-50% off retail. Two programs that greatly appealed to me were the Thrive Gives program and also the Thrive commitment to sustainability. The Thrive Gives initiative is a unique take on one-to-one giving and it works like this:
Every paid membership is matched with a free membership for a low-income American family.
That’s it. Simple and brilliant. Who are the people who need access to discounted food and natural products the most? Clearly, low income families. As Thrive Market grows, the reach for low-income families will grow too.
On the sustainability front Thrive Market is committed to being an environmentally responsible and sustainable business. All packaging, boxes, and inserts are made from recycled paper and are recyclable. Thrive Market is committed to supporting other sustainable businesses by working with eco-friendly vendors and suppliers who share our values. Thrive Market is 100% carbon neutral through carbonfund.org. This certification covers national shipping, packaging materials, warehouse utilities and the commutes of Thrive employees. I have made introductions to Thrive and the Savory Institute and Farm To Consumer Legal Defense Fund (among others) who are at the vanguard of sustainability and food freedom.
Special offer for RobbWolf.com followers
If Thrive Market looks like a cool thing to check out, this will really goose you in the britches to try it: From Monday March 2nd to Sunday march 8th, RW.com followers who check out Thrive will be entered to win either a Grand Prize, $500 Thrive Market shopping spree or twenty 2nd place prizes of a 1 year membership to Thrive Market.
Robb, this seems like a great gig, but I feel like I need to complain about something. Here goes…
Sigh. The interwebz being what they are, even if something is optional, great, possibly even advantageous, some folks will find something to complain about. I’ll tackle a few of those here:
But Robb! Thrive Market does not sell ONLY “Paleo” food!
True. This is similar to every food outlet I’ve seen with perhaps the exception of a road-side farmer stand. If you shop in ANY supermarket…well, same story.
I would possibly do better from a marketing perspective if I drew clear, black and white distinctions in my work. Carbs:BAD! FAT:GOOD! That’s not how I do things. My work is not about religious evangelism promising “one true way.” I let folks know they have options AND I work to secure the freedoms for you to eat how YOU want to. Thrive Market offers products that tick the following boxes: Paleo, Vegan, gluten-free, gluten-containing. Some of the products you will want, some you will not, same as every trip you make to buy something whether it’s food from the super market or a home stereo system.
ROBB!! Are you going to make money from this??
I sure hope so. Those links you clicked on are “affiliate links.” If you buy something, I will get a cut of that. More importantly however, I am a primary investor in Thrive Market. Let me walk you through my process of deciding to invest in Thrive, and perhaps this will shed some light on if becoming a member makes sense to you:
When I looked at what Thrive was offering/doing I noticed the following:
1-This looked like a great investment opportunity for me.
2-You folks could benefit greatly by getting the stuff you already buy, but at a significant discount from retail.
3-I was impressed with the Thrive Gives program, commitment to sustainability and interest in supporting outfits like the Savory Institute and Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund.
When I looked at this it seemed likely that I would benefit, you folks would benefit and organizations I fight for would benefit. But hey, now that I’m an investor, how do you really know that I do not have some kind of nefarious agenda? (trust me, someone in the comments WILL ask) That’s easy: take a few receipts from your recent shopping trips and compare what you will save if you bought that stuff from Thrive. If it’s not a net “win” don’t do it. Most people however find that they save more in their first purchase than the cost of a yearly membership.
Ok, that’s the basic drill on Thrive Market. Let me know what you think, what you are saving and if you do not see products that you want, let the folks at Thrive know.
Shannon says
This looks really cool … two benefits you didn’t mention: (1) I don’t have to fight the crazy crowds at my local Costco or Whole Foods and (2) THERE ARE AMAZON-ESQUE PRODUCT REVIEWS! I was thinking, “reviews would be so cool” and then I saw stars, literally. Yay!
Jeff Schearer says
Thrive Market is a total scan. I just had the worst online experience of my life with them and they tried to rip me off. If you don’t believe me, just go online and see the hundreds of complaints against them. even the better business bureau admits that they have had an extremely high number of complaints against Thrive Online.
Dominique (Thrive Member Services) says
Hi Jeff! Dominique here with Thrive Market! We’re sorry you had an unpleasant experience with us. Adrienne says
Complete BS. You are not happy to help. You make it extremely difficult to cancel a membership, which is manipulative and disrespectful. It has left a bad taste in my mouth and is the only reason I will never recommend Thrive to anyone.
Diana (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Dear Adrienne, thank you for reaching out to us. We value your feedback and we will pass this along to our team so we can improve our services moving forward. Let us know if there is anything we can assist you with. You can reach us at [email protected].
Teerawong Kasiolarn says
I also have a bad experience with the Thrive Market. I bought a few items online last year in September 2015. I saved a few bucks from buying from them. No big deal. I signed in with my Facebook account as they have a special deal during that time that you get a free membership and if you like it, you can pay for it later. I was not thrilled with products online that they offer at Thrive Market and I did not shop with them ever since. I just realize it today that Thrive Market actually charged my credit card for the membership fee ($59.95) in Oct 2015 (a month after my purchase), I did not even get an email receipt from them and I was not even aware of the charge until a year later! Thrive Market really sneaked up on you with the membership charge. So, I just realize again today that they also charged my credit card on 10/20/16 for the membership fee and not giving me the receipt to warn me about it. I know about the charges through looking at my credit card bills online. I was so mad that I actually paid the membership fee last year and was not informed about this. From what I know, I did not see anything saying that they will charge me a month later for the membership fee. If I would have known that I would not shop it with them. So, I called Thrive Market today for the first time to talk the membership staff and it took me almost 30 minutes to reach somebody who can help me and the staff only reimbursed me for this year membership and not last year. As I told them that if they were going to charge somebody, at least, they should send them a receipt to inform about the purchase and I did not get anything as I was not aware that I actually had a membership last year. Very disappointed about this company! I would not recommend Thrive Market to anyone!
Mao (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Teera – We’re sorry to hear that you were not aware of the membership model. We offer a free 30-day trial for every new member at Thrive Market; your free trial starts with your first Thrive purchase and will last a full month with full membership benefits. Our membership fee of $59.95 is charged after your trial for the full year.
Cancellation requests can be submitted at https://thrivemarket.com/faq/index/cancellation/ , via email at [email protected] or by calling Member Services at (866) 419-2174 Monday-Friday, 7am-4pm; Saturday, 8am-5pm Pacific Standard Time.

Hi Jeff! We would be happy to help you settle your account at 866-419-2174! We apologize for any inconvenience you’ve experienced and we’d be happy to make it right. Thrive on!
Edward says
The entire process of membership cancellation, whether trial or annual membership, is rather shady. You’ll receive an email informing you that your membership is about to expire but there is no link to directly cancel nor is there a place in the membership section (which displays your expiration date) that allows you to simply click a box that cancels your automatically recurring
Membership. I have various regular subscriptions including shopping, periodicals, etc and ALL, I repeat ALL of them, have a very convenient place to simply clink a box that says “do not renew”. The idea that Thrive has a website this advanced, visually pleasant, searchable, easy to purchase goods, etc. but DOESN’T provide a way to easily cancel is not only odd and questionable, but obviously intentional. You can email them to ask them to cancel but you’ll receive no receipt stating your cancellation and you can call but again, you won’t receive any receipt. Everyone at Thrive is quite pleasant and always very “sorry” and “apologetic” (albeit a little accusatory that you yourself had done something wrong in not cancelling properly) but the mere idea that a website this advanced doesn’t allow a simple and direct membership cancellation says volumes about who they are as a company. The idea of a membership fee is odd enough no matter how they justify it, and the advantage of cheaper pricing frankly isn’t that great. But those things coupled with the highly questionable business practice of no direct cancellation is a tipping point. If you’re thinking of joining, even on a trial basis, I caution you. There are too many alternatives. Don’t.
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Edward! Thank you for checking out Thrive Market. We provide three easy ways to request to cancel: by email at [email protected], by phone at (866) 419-2174, and through our online service portal at thrivemarket.com/faq/index/cancellation/. We follow up to cancellation requests within 48 hours. Because it is important to us that the natural products that we offer are affordable and accessible to all, we may offer an alternative membership option to accommodate a trial member. This personalized cancellation process is important to us as we continue to improve our service. We send email confirmations to those who request their cancellation via our portal or [email protected] after an account has been canceled and we are more than happy to send an email confirmation to those who reach out by phone when requested. If you have any further concerns that we can address, we would love the opportunity to at [email protected].

ZAHRA H AL RUMAH says
Will you refund me the membership fee after I cancel. I just found out that you got the payement from my account, but I didn’t get any email asking me to renew or remind me about my membership expiration.
Linda Levy says
Have you been to Costco lately…
They won’t let you in without a membership. Why do you think membership is shady?
Robb Wolf says
Yes, I attend a gym which also requires a membership…shady as it comes.
Lawrence says
It’s misleading if it isn’t mentioned clearly in the open, is hidden within the I Agree to Terms and Conditions box, which usually applies to refunds and returns, and is buried three pages in and scrolled far down. If it doesn’t appear on the invoice, and you r first awareness of it is when it shows on your credit card statement one month later. I have been unable to return to the terms and conditions page.
CS says
I am also trying to cancel my “subscription” this “service”. I had to resort to an internet search, by which I found this page, then the comment with link to “thrivemarket.com/faq/index/cancellation/” which was not discoverable by reviewing my account details. Even after clicking that link, it states something along the lines “your account isn’t expired yet”. Uh, so I guess that doesn’t work either.
Really TM, figure this out. Nobody likes being forced into a business relationship. Make it easy to opt out. I would have considered returning to your service after my move, but now, after this experience, I will not.
Get a clue.

I ordered from thrive because I saw a few items that I was interested in. The next month I’m missing $59.95 from my account and couldn’t figure out where it went. I called my bank and they informed me that thrive had taken it for a membership fee! No where did i see anything about a membership fee when ordering. I called and talked to a very pleasant man who said because I had just placed an order to wait until I receive it and then call back and they would help me. Otherwise it could mess up my order that I had just placed. When asked how that would mess my order up. He replied that maybe things could be damaged or not a complete order. I said well any reputable company would fix that whether or not you have a paid membership! Then he went on to say something about taking 15% off my next two orders to justify my membership fee. I told him I was disabled and living on a fixed income. I can’t afford $59.95 to just be snatched away from me with no warning or idea that I was even going to be charged. So he told me to call when I receive my order. I thought it was crazy but I will be calling again when my order arrives to try and get my money back. I would never have ordered from this company had I known I was going to be charged! I order from other companies who don’t charge a fee. If you match low income families then you should be paying for my membership fee because I am one!!!
Mao-Yue Own says
Hi Jane Gramza – We’re sorry to hear that you experienced an issue cancelling your membership. We make an effort to make the cancellation process efficient, while also making an effort to accommodate every member. We appreciate your feedback and we will pass this on to our team.
Thank you for your interest in Thrive Market! We never want our yearly membership fee to stand in the way of families and individuals who would benefit from our services, so we started Thrive Gives: a program dedicated to making healthy living affordable and accessible for all!
Through the Thrive Gives program, we distribute free memberships to low income families and individuals, veterans, teachers, students, and first responders that meet our criteria.
Applying is easy! Just follow this link to get started: thrivemarket.com/givingapp. Once submitted, please allow us 3-5 business days to reach out to you if you are not instantly approved.
Should you have any questions about the application process let me know, I’ll be happy to assist you.

I realize there are a lot of negative comments but I had a POSITIVE experience getting my “subscription” refunded. I enjoyed the products but chose not to pay the fee, and yes, my credit card was charged. However, I received a refund on my cc PROMPTLY! Never have I seen so many poor reviews and received something totally the opposite! Thank you, Thrive!

I tried their 30 day free trial membership and had a very hard time finding their link to cancel and was still charged a discounted fee of 29.95. I called them about it and woman said it would be refunde and was a mistake by their computer and would take about 3 days to appear on my account. Two weeks later I called again as no refund and woman said she was putting my refund in the computer as we speak and said would take about 7 days to appear on my account. It’s now two weeks since that last call and, you guessed it, still no refund so I called them again and was told I was refunded November 30th and she hung up. I just file a dispute with credit card company and a complaint with their BBB and going to face book next. Very shady business practices and sounds like ROBB WOLF is helping them to scam people and making money to do it. They wanted $60 for annual membership but I’m disabled senior citizen and cannot afford their prices which are high and much cheaper else where on line with no membership fee.

Yes!! THRIVE is shady and has terrible customer service. It is high pressure and took a huge amount of my time to resolve problems I had. I just cancelled the free trial after 3 tries and we will see if they actually cancel it. I have a written transcript but they didn’t issue me a confirmation number. Do NOT use this company
Beverly says
I also had a trial membership that I tried to cancel last year. I had the trial for almost 30 days, wrote an email saying that we did not use it enough to warrant extending it. I do not check my email very frequently (we live on a farm with spotty internet) but when I checked again what I had was an email offering me a lower price to stay and they went ahead and charged our credit card without me authorizing it. I said I wanted to CANCEL. They should not have assumed that I would accept their offer. Being a homeschooling mommy of a large family I did not have a lot of time to fight it. I figured my time was almost up and today went to their website to try and cancel. I got a page saying my membership was not up until June 2nd. I have sent them an email saying I do NOT want to be charged again. I don’t have the time to babysit the computer to make sure they don;t charge me on June 2nd! There should be a way online to make sure the membership charge does not cycle on June 2nd. I am very frustrated with them and will not be recommending them.
Beverly says
This is what their “cancellation portal” says as far as my account:
It looks like your paid membership doesn’t expire until Jun 2, 2016. Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to assist you.

I CANCELLED the trial membership – in May 2015. (albeit by way of a multi-part email conversation because there was no way to cancel on the website)
They did NOT CHARGE my card for a membership at that time, I figured I was in the clear.
Lo and behold – a $59.95 membership charge appears on my statement in June 2016.

I placed an order on a free trial membership. I canceled immediately the same day and received an email stating the membership was cancled. However, they continued to send 7 more emails lowering the price and asking if I would stay. Each time I answered “no”.
The box of food, salt lamps and essential oils were left out in the rain for 8 hours by front door. When I attempted to pick up the box, everything fell through. The salt lamps tumbled down my steps breaking into pieces. The essential oils broke open all over. My food was in soggy boxes and I had a mess all over my front steps and it was still pouring rain!
I called to get a refund and met with some much harassment. I was told that they would send me a gift card to use in the store but it would activate another membership and could not be canceled. I declined the gift card and asked for a refund. I was told I could not have a refund. I spoke with a manager who finally agreed. Then, a week later I was billed $59.95 membership fee. I have tried to call customer service but there is never anyone available. I have sent numerous emails. Finally I had to file a dispute with my credit card company. What a major pain in my *%&. This is not a company you want to order from. They are crooked and do not respond. Just go to Whole Foods
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Gretchen- we are very sorry to hear that you had this experience. We strive to provide excellent service to our members and apologize that you received a damaged order. We have shared this with our courier, as your box should not have been left in the rain. It appears that because your account had been canceled, the reorder reactivated your membership. It has since been refunded and cancelled, per the email request that we followed up to, and we apologize that you were charged unexpectedly. Our phone number (866) 419-2174 is open Monday-Friday, 6am-6pm and Saturday, 8am-5pm Pacific Standard Time. Again, we are so sorry for the disappointment with your order and hope that you will give us a call if there is anything else that we can do to assist.
Ron says
Please be cautious of using this service. When you place an order they promise you a free gift for spending a certain amount of money. I spent the required amount of money and was promised a free gift of avacado oil. The gift was not delivered as promised, with no explanation. After contacting customer service, this is the response I get. What a scam. I’ll be making a BBB complaint to see if this is even legal to do because it’s certainly not ethical.
Thank you so much for shopping at Thrive Market!
I’m so sorry to hear that your gift with purchase was not included in your order! Due to the high demand of this promotion, it was out of stock at the time your order was fulfilled by our distribution center. As noted in the terms and conditions, this offer expires when supplies run out.
I do apologize for the inconvenience. We have a ton of promotions every week, so keep an eye on your email and follow us on social media for early access to the next great offer!
For the inconvenience, I’d like to offer you 10% off your next order with coupon code
Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with today
Whitney (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Ron- Thank you for shopping with us. I’m sorry that the free gift not being included in your order left you unsatisfied. Our policy for free gifts with purchase states, “Quantities of this special offer are limited and subject to continued availability. Limited offer expires when supplies run out.” Unfortunately, the avocado oil promotion was no longer available so it was not included in you order.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please call us Monday-Saturday between 9am and 5pm PST at (866) 419-2174, or email us at [email protected]; We’re always happy to help!

And then you cannot use the 10% off for the delayed shipping, problem you had, etc if you want to get any discount on your order. They were supposed to give me $10 credit because my order was 8 days LATER than they said. Tried to use it with the 20% initial offer and it’s choose one or the other even though it was poor service. NOPE, don’t use this company. I filed BBB report on them.

I wanted to try Thrive Market so I could get paleo mayo. So I signed up for their 30-day free trial. Before the free trial expired, I emailed them to cancel my membership.
Three days later I was charged for their membership, which is already over-priced, since they do not offer true co-op prices.
The only way to cancel your membership is to send an email to them. I’ve sent three emails to them over the last week, requesting my membership to be canceled and a full refund, but I have received NO reply.
Terrible customer service, and unethical business.
Advan says
Folks, we too have had enormous problems with this site. We have been fighting to get our membership cancelled for weeks now only to be charged unduly. We called, emailed, etc. several times with either no response or a rather delayed response. With the membership cost on top of everything else, it is not likely it will be worth it for most people anyway. The best thing about this was that we found much cheaper places to get what we were seeking in the first place and get much fresher items. The other thing you want to keep in mind is the dates of many products. You are getting the cheapest products they can find. Our experience was that there were many products much sooner to expire than we get elsewhere and within months in some cases for things that normally have a very long shelf-life. Good luck to everyone.
Robb Wolf says
Advan- Can you PM me the email you used for this? I’d like to cross-reference that with the Thrive Market folks. I have heard of NO ONE having issues like this, so please provide the email you used for this process.
Edie says
My thirty day trial is up tomorrow and I have a feeling I will be charged for something I have tried to cancel, many times. The emails that I am sent specifically state that any email that is sent to them will not be read. I cancelled my ‘trial’ weeks ago and my reply email stated that I would have to do it again on the 16th. I cancelled it again by going to the web site earlier tonight and also sending two emails. I also called the company the first time I tried to cancel it and the man I spoke with said it would be cancelled before the 16th, that it would remain open incase I changed my mind. I now see that I will still be billed tomorrow for the membership I already cancelled. There is absolutely no way to cancel this membership on the internet. We will see what happens, but I should have never gotten an email stating I will be billed on the 16th.
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says

I assure you that this is a regular problem with this website. I cannot even find a location to cancel the membership, which every other membership site manages to make readily available. If you read through blogs, customer service and ability to cancel memberships is mentioned in nearly every single blog. It screams of unethical business practices.
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Cindy- we have listened to customer feedback and updated our cancellation process to make it more user friendly. We have also grown our department to make sure that we are able to respond to all requests quickly. Our “contact us” page (https://thrivemarket.com/faq?contactus) has a phone number, email address and cancellation request portal, all of which can be used to cancel your membership if you choose to. We hope that this helps!
Nannette says
I too had exactly the same problem. I cancelled my free 30 day membership as instructed on the web site within the appointed time yet my card was charged. I sent a complaint e mail and was responded to in an appropriate amount of time noting their concern but my card has never been reimbursed to this day. I figured I would make the most of it and order gifts for the holidays and that has gone well. I obviously no longer expect reimbursement for this membership time frame yet I fear I will never get control over the auto renewal in the future.;
Sam (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Nannette! Please reach out to us at 866-419-2174 and we would be happy to settle your account! We would never intend to charge someone for a membership they do not want and have not used. We hope to hear from you soon!

Hi Nannette! Please reach out to us at 866-419-2174 and we would be happy to settle your account! We would never intend to charge someone for a membership they do not want and have not used. We hope to hear from you soon!
Shary says
Sarah, I’ve seen this type of thing over and over again on several different comment sites. Thrive Market’s high pressure tactics and apparent customer service discombobulation are a real turnoff. Based on that alone, I would not buy from them. I don’t understand why so many Paleo-related gurus are advertising for them, particularly since Paleo devotees usually spend most of their often-limited food budget on fresh foods rather than packaged items.
Monica says
Funny, that email address, which is currently still on their website as of August 13, is not valid. Yet it’s still on their website. They’ll send another email telling you to use support@ thrivemarket com. Then they’ll email you apologizing for not getting back with you, but that they haven’t time but haven’t forgotten about you. No one answers the number they give you to call either. My bank even tried. I closed my account because I can see they are up to no good. This is not what honest companies do and I should have researched first.
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Monica – the support@thrivemarket email is not active either. Thank you for bringing this to our attention as the help email should not be listed and the support email should not be provided as an alternative.
We recenetly launched our new FAQ page which is how you can contact us online. Or you can feel free to give us a call.
You can also access our cancellation portal here:
https://thrivemarket.com/faq/index/cancellation/
I’m so sorry you were unable to get in touch with us. As a brand new company we are currently experiencing incredible growth, which has been great, but has slowed down our response times.
We are working very hard to get back to everyone as quickly as possible. Again I apologize that we were unable to follow-up with you sooner!
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Sarah – We’re so sorry we were unable to get back to you before your membership fee was charged. We hope that it was taken care of! Let us know if there’s anything we can do to help!
Amelia Cates says
Misha,
In your comment right before this one, you said, “As a brand new company we are currently experiencing incredible growth, which has been great, but has slowed down our response times. We are working very hard to get back to everyone as quickly as possible.”
The solution to these problems that many of your customers are having is to create and advertise just one e-mail address for people to use and then hire staff to handle that e-mail address. I think this is a no brainer.
Nancy Cowen says
I too tried unsuccessfully to cancel my membership after the free trial month but I couldn’t get any email to go through. Nor could I access the site through “member Services.” Then I was charged $59.95 because I couldn’t get through to Thrive in time. Now I’ve tried over & over to contact them but nothing, absolutely nothing seems to get through. This may be a scam in spite of all their talk about social missions. If this continues even for a few more days I’ll seriously consider notifying authorities. From all these posts, It’s beginning to look as though Thrive stalls people until after the deadline, then takes their money, and meanwhile can’t be reached. by mail or phone or pony express. If you read this, Thrive people, please respond and prove me wrong.
Sam (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Nancy! We never intend to charge someone for something they don’t want. Of course we don’t want to see our customers go, but we are always happy to help someone out if they aren’t interested. If you haven’t been able to reach us yet please submit a request through this form: https://thrivemarket.com/faq/index/cancellation/
Jackie Anderson says
I had the same thing happen to me, I sent in a cancellation request on the Thrive website before my trial period was over. I even stopped getting emails from Thrive, but a few weeks later my bank account was charged and then I logged on the website and under “Membership” in my account, expecting to find nothing, it said your annual membership ends October ___. 2016. I would like my money back and my membership cancelled.
Tiffany (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Jackie, I’m so sorry to hear that! We would be happy to help you check on your account. We honor all of our customer requests. Please reach out to our member services department at (866) 419-2174.
Susan says
It gives me comfort to know that I’m not the only person who this happened to. I found their business tactics to be very underhanded. I got charged for a membership too when I had called to cancel. It finally got reversed, but only after extra effort, frustration and stress.
Also, I find their promotions misleading. They send me $15 or 15% off coupons, I can’t remember which, but of course, they aren’t usable unless I pay to become a member. There is a better way to do business and still make money folks. I love the concept and many of their products, but their execution and business practices have been less than impressive. No thanks, I’ll pay a slightly higher price elsewhere to nicer people. BTW, Thrive doesn’t always offer the lowest price available.
Sam (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Susan! We base our discounts on the average retail price suggested by the manufacturer. We are always happy to compensate for any failed promotions! Additionally, our membership fee allows us to do some pretty awesome things like provide our wholesale prices and give to those in need! Hopefully this helps explain our rationale, you can read more on our mission here: https://thrivemarket.com/our-mission
Jasmine says
I also had the exact problem listed above! The site given (https://thrivemarket.com/faq/index/cancellation/) literally does nothing after you submit a cancellation. You stop getting emails, and then a few weeks later BOOM you’re signed up and there’s a charge of 59.95 on your account! It’s b.s. and this company has no costumer service whatsoever! Do your research people! I didn’t and now I’m stuck trying to cancel this and get my money back. Thrive Market is all smiles on their website and seems so legit, but I mark it as a scam with the way they refuse to listen to their costumers. As others have stated it’s not worth it and you can probably find cheaper elsewhere.
MILAN (THRIVE MARKET MEMBER SERVICES) says
Hi Jasmine! We are so sorry for the trouble you have experienced! Emails sent through our FAQ page are directed to Member Services, in which they’ll respond within 24 hours to your cancellation request! If you need any further assistance, please feel free to call us at (866) 419-2174 and we’ll be happy to assist you right away!
Lynne Stewart says
Hey – is this Market available to Canadians? And did you make sure your recycled paper products are FREE of BPA?
Robb Wolf says
Not yet in Canada, and you will need to check with Thrive on the BPA.
Todd Nelson says
I have been in contact with these people on three separate occasions informing them to cancel my subscription. Each time I receive an email begging me to keep trying their service and essentially denying my request to cancel. If my card is charged in three days, I will be calling my State Attorney General’s Office. You should not be recommending this place!
Momof1 says
I have to agree with you. I unequivocally cancelled my membership before the trial expiration date, but was unilaterally extended 7 days by them. I did not accept that offer and they charged me the full amount of the membership anyway. WTH? For that reason alone I cancelled my membership even when they offered me a discount on the membership for 6 months. Don’t get me wrong I do think they offer great prices, but for me I didn’t think I would get the value based on what I would order and the price of membership. No means no. They did eventually reimburse me, but honestly I felt really pressured.
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Momo – We’re so sorry that you felt that way. It is certainly not our intention, and do not want anyone to feel like they have to be a member. We want our Thrive members to be those that support our mission, and don’t want anyone to feel forced to be a part of it.
Thanks for your feedback!
Denise says
Misha,
The same thing has happened to me I have tried to cancel twice and I was still charged. The amount has sent my bank account into a an overdraft snowball with my small purchases costing me a fee each. I am a consumer news reporter that just wanted to try out this new service, but I prepared to do an investigative news piece on this to expose the shiftiness of the cancellation process unless this is fixed.
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
I’m so sorry to hear that you had trouble canceling!
You can give membership services a call at 866-419-2174, and they’d be happy to look into it for you!
Meag says
I love Thrive Market! My family is on a very specific diet due to allergies and we are also on a very limited budget. We put our health as top priority and reduce wasted money in areas of our lives so we can eat top notch food. That being said the membership fee wasn’t possible so I emailed to cancel explaining that although we love this company we can’t afford the fee…I was so pleasantly surprised by their response offering a lower fee to help us out.
Robb Wolf says
Meag-
That is part of the social mission that drew me to these folks. They offer a membership to low-income families (one for each regular paid membership) which one could argue low income folks are the ones who will benefit from Thrive the most.
As an aside- I am STILL waiting for the folks who claimed that they cannot cancel their memberships to send me emails. That’s interesting…
Katrun says
i have no problems giving you my email. Where do I PM you?
Robb Wolf says
Katrun-
I posted a link to directly email TM, look up a few comments. Let me know if you have any problems with that.
Monica says
Why would people need to send you emails? Interesting that you had difficulty “tracking down” their address and that you find it interesting that people with this problem haven’t emailed you. They may have good prices and products, but what they are doing to people is wrong.
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Monica- We definitely have no intention of trying to keep anyone that isn’t interested in supporting our social mission or our selection of non-gmo products.
We did recently launch our online portal including a cancellation page to allow for faster response times.
Amelia Cates says
Too bad they didn’t charge you at all. That’s something that Robb Wolf is so positive about. Talk is cheap. Where’s the proof?
Moriah says
Is there any way to check out the prices without signing up? I am very hesitant to join something sight unseen.
Thanks!
Robb Wolf says
I think you need to use some kind of email…just how it works.
Amelia Cates says
OMG, another e-mail to use? I think that the people who have been trying to cancel their subscriptions will laugh at this.
Sam (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Amelia! With the large influx of new customers and inquiries we’ve experienced in the last several months we’ve launched a new FAQ page to provide greater self service to our customers and improve our correspondence! We’re constantly improving, and streamlining our services is a big part of that. I’m so sorry for any inconvenience experienced!

diane nelson says
I have also tried to cancel my membership with Thrive — prices are just not low enough to make it worthwhile. Today when I try to log in, the site says my info isn’t correct (and I’m sure it is), so I asked for a new password and have been waiting over an hour for the email they said would be sent with instructions…. do you have any way of contacting these people?
Thank you for any help you can give.
Robb Wolf says
Diane-
I shot your comment and email to TM, I’ll let you know what I get back.
Robb Wolf says
Folks-
This is what I got back from Thrive:
It seems like there have been several issues with resetting passwords and logging in after a new deployment we had on our end.
You can direct everyone to [email protected] if the issue is still happening, but we believe it should be fixed.
Katrun says
They are just telling you the same schtick they hand out to everyone else. This is stealing, flat out stealing. If you are going to promote this site, I suggest you talk to someone there and find out their business processes before you continue to have your name associated with unethical business practices. I’m still waiting to even get a reply from them, much less my hard earned money back. Shady, very shady.
Monica says
They are shady and [email protected] won’t work. My bank can’t even get in touch with them
Katrun says
I am having the same issues with this site canceling my membership. This is straight up fraud. I emailed to cancel my 30 day trial, received an email (promptly, which proves they do know how to answer ) offering me a reduced rate and if I wanted it to email back. I did not but have been charged this month. There is no phone number and they will now not answer my emails. This is criminal and flat out stealing. I want a number and I want a refund.
Robb Wolf says
I am forwarding all of this on to them…If there is a problem I WILL fix it.
Jessica says
I placed a “trial” order with this company after hearing all the hype from so many online health writers. Like everyone says here it is a horrible company! I did not agree to a membership and they charged my card anyway. Their customer service is horrible and is not responding. I will now have to dispute the charge with my credit card. The savings are minimal compared to the pricey membership fee, especially when you have to order $49+ to get free shipping. Plus, it takes the food over a week to arrive. Thrive is awful!
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Jessica – I’m so sorry to hear you had trouble getting in touch with us! The membership model is explained and checkout and we also send out a reminder email prior to the trial end date. I apologize that you were not able to see it in time!
Feel free to give us a call at 866-419-2174, and a specialist will be happy to help you out!

I’m trying to get information on how to apply as a family in need. Any ideas how or where to go for that? I cannot find it on the website.
Robb Wolf says
I’m looking into this.

Luis Barandiaran says
Hi Robb…. I’m a producer in Boulder trying to join Thrive as a vendor, but am not having luck finding a contact through their website. It sounds like you may have some contacts there. Could you please point me in the right direction so we could submit our NudeFood products? Thanks! LB
Robb Wolf says
Just forwarded your contact info! Now, do keep in mind they are only selling non-perishable items currently.
Luis Barandiaran says
Great…. thanks, Robb! if you want to shoot me an email to my personal account, I’d love to get some samples of our amazing paleo-friendly vision of what conventional ‘protein’ powders SHOULD be like! I think your readers would really dig it! Thanks again!
Robb Wolf says
Will do and here is their vendor form:

Hi Robb! I just happened upon your site while searching for information on Thrive Market and I too would love to get information on how to apply as a family in need. Any ideas on how to get the process started would be greatly appreciated. …Thanks !

HI Natasha – Feel free to send us an email via our FAQ page and a specialist will be happy to send you an application for Thrive Gives!
Chad M. says
another unhappy customer with login issues and unapproved membership fee charge! They won’t answer our calls, and reply emails don’t solve any issues.
Robb Wolf says
Chad-
I just forwarded this to [email protected]
Please keep me updated.
Shary says
Chad, presumably you gave Thrive Market a credit card number. Call the bank that issued your card. You can dispute any unauthorized charges. Thrive is either very disorganized or deliberately refusing to refund unauthorized membership fees. This constitutes fraud. I wouldn’t bother dealing with them any further. Call your credit card company instead.
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Shary – we definitely don’t have any intention of charging members unexpectedly. We do have a membership model explained at checkout when placing your first order, as well as a reminder email so that you have a chance to cancel if you wish.
We have experienced a major influx of new members and inquiries, so it is taking us a bit longer to get back to everyone, but we would never deliberately refuse to cancel anyone.
Veronica says
Some of their prices are good, however most of their discounts are inflated. For example, Nature’s Path Organic cereals show that they 31%-33% off, (roughly $3.65 vs $5.50). However these boxes are under $4.50 at whole foods and only $2.99 at Trader Joe’s. Whole Foods is always a bit pricier depending on the product, but Trader Joe’s almost always comes out on top in terms of a cheaper price. A lot of the Kashi cereals on Thrive are originally more than $6 but only $4.25 at Thrive. I’ve never seen Kashi cereal for more than $6 (I live in Chicago) and most local grocery stores sell them for less than $5 (I want to say for less than $4 also).
I usually look at cereals when comparing prices. However I will give Thrive credit that their Kind bars are a deal! A box of 12 costs $16 on Thrive (less than $1 per bar!) whereas $18-20 is what I usually see them for.
Tom’s natural deodorant – I’ve never seen these go for more than $5, whereas Thrive shows that they are originally priced at more than $7 – where are they getting these price comparisons?
The chips, such as Kettle, are not competitively priced. Most grocery stores, including Whole Foods, have sales on chips and junk food all the time. You can get these for under $3 during a sale.
All in all, I think Thrive has to work a little bit harder to reduce prices. They are clearly saving money on running an actual grocery store, but the prices don’t reflect it. Especially when you have to pay for shipping under $50.
Also, my other takeaway is that if you’re striving to eat healthy and organic, you most likely buy more produce than packaged goods. I don’t think I spend $50 a month on packaged goods which is where the membership and the shipping minimums just don’t work for me. Good concept though!
Robb Wolf says
Veronica-
You win the Savvy Shopper of the century award!
Kathleen says
You don’t have to be a “savvy shopper of the century” to notice that the ThriveMarket prices are insanely inflated or that they are clearly using this is a marketing ploy to fool people into thinking they’re getting some sort of a deal shopping on this site. ThriveMarket prices are listed as much higher than Whole Foods already high prices. This blatant attempt at deception coupled with the passive-aggressive comments in this thread toward those who don’t agree to bathe this business in false praise despite its obvious poor business practices makes me want to not only avoid doing business with them, but to also avoid doing business with anyone involved with them.
If the concept is so wonderful, there would be no need for the deception nor the passive-aggression.
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Kathleen! We get our retail prices directly from the brands themselves. Some stores sell items for above the retail prices and some sell them for below but across the board, shopping with Thrive is less expensive 90% of the time. In fact, most members make up the cost of membership in savings by their third order. It has never been our intention to deceive people and we continually get great feedback from members whose lives have been positively impacted by our savings. We are constantly improving our member experience based on the feedback that we have gotten and hope that you will continue to share feedback with us here: https://thrivemarket.com/faq/contact/.
Pam says
I actually ended up on this page after a google search. I wanted to see if anyone else was having issues with Thrive as it relates to expiration dates.
I did do the trial membership, and then happened to cancel the credit card before the renewal date (lost card) and am so glad something good came from that in that Thrive couldn’t automatically renew.
One, of the many, things I bought in my original order was the Mayo. I was so excited to see the product and I do love it. I received my package mid May. ALL the expiration dates (whether Almond Butter, Cacao Powder, Mayo) had JULY 2015 Expiration DATES!! I could never use an entire jar of mayo in two months.
That led me to check all the expiration dates of the almost 20 items I ordered. None of them were more than 3 months from expiring.
I am thinking that the “discounted” prices are due to Thrive buying at a discount from retailers what they would be taking off their shelves.
As another remarked. Shady, very very Shady!
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Pam – we would never intentionally sell products that were close to expiration. Our purchasing team works very hard to maintain high quality control of all the products we carry.
If there are any products that you had issues with, we’d be happy to reach out to our purchasing team sot hat they can get in contact with the brands directly as they should not be sending us any products so close to expiration.
We also do not automatically renew without sending reminders. We apologize if you weren’t able to see our email or the membership model explained when placing your first order at checkout!
Kian says
I am still in the free trial period for Thrive, but I’ve placed 2 orders so far and have been nothing but happy with the experience.
After reading some of these comments I went and checked the expiration dates for my most recent order (nothing left from the first order to check).
The nearest expiration date that i found on was on a bag of tortilla chips, they expire in July, but seeing as we eat a lot of chips and pico de gallo or salsa, that truly is not an issue.
Every other item was 3 months (salad dressing, again not an issue) to a year out. So, at least one customer is not having an issue with expiration dates and I will be happy to subscribe.
(but sorry Robb, I didn’t sign up through you. I only found this when I was using Swagbucks to go to the Thrive website)
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Kian – We’re happy to hear that you’re enjoying the Thrive experience so far! Excited to have you on board. Thanks for supporting our mission!
David Hall says
Its very easy to search and find ‘bad press’ related to membership cancelations for this ‘thrive market’ . Before joining ‘google’ search reviews on this site and you will not join.
Celeste says
I also cancelled my “free” trial, and was just charged for membership. This is infuriating when companies do this. It happens all the time! How do you actually cancel and get the charges to STOP!!!
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Celeste – we’re so sorry that happened and that we were unable to follow-up before you membership was charged! Has a specialist gotten back to you yet? We’d be more than happy to help!
Celeste says
My credit card company is reversing the charge and blocking future charges from Thrive. They’re also initiating a billing investigation.
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
You will not be charged for future membership as long as your account has been cancelled and you do not place any further orders as it will reactivate your account.
Feel free to call us and a specialist can confirm that your account has been canceled.
Arturo Salgado says
I too had an issue cancelling. I canceled before my 30 day free trial expired. I asked 3 times before they finally got the picture that I wanted to canceling. Basically begging me to stay. They said “I know you are considering canceling”, no I’m not considering, I AM CANCELING. Then the person went on to say “I would like to offer you the option to continue with a 6 month membership for $29.95. This will give you the opportunity to try Thrive out with a shortened membership without committing to the full price. I hope you’ll take advantage of this offer! Please let me know how you wish to proceed, and I’ll make any necessary adjustments. I’ve updated your account to reflect this offer in case I don’t hear back from you” I did not want that offer, the person should not have done that unless I said yes, very shady. I finally then had to say “Did I not just say I am cancelling my membership? What do you not understand? Please cancel my membership! I have found a better site.” I hope I am not billed come the 20th of July or I am filing a complaint with BBB.
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Arturo! I am very sorry if the cancellation process was frustrating for you. As a new company, we do like to start a dialogue to get any feedback that we can from people who have placed orders with us. We also don’t want price to stand in the way from anyone accessing our savings so we do provide some alternative options but we absolutely honor any denials of these offers. We appreciate you trying out Thrive Market and will consider your feedback when moving forward!
Kelly says
I had the same problem – I asked to cancel before the due date (1/20/16) to charge the membership fee, was offered the 29.95 price, replied no thanks and asked to cancel too, and my card was still charged on the 21st- the full 59.95. No response yet to my emails and it’s January 30th.
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Kelly- we are currently responding to all emails within 24 hours. If this has not yet been resolved, we will be happy to take care of it for you right away at (866) 419-2174.
matt says
Why is every single paleo blogger being used to push thrive market? How much are they paying people? Did they ever pay out the $1,000.00 contest? The concept is nice but it just smells like a scam. If they had good pricing, delivery and customer service they wouldn’t need every single blog to post a “funded review”.
Robb Wolf says
Did you bother to read to the bottom of the post?????
Shary says
Ah, yes. NOW I understand. It’s all about money. Thanks for pointing out the bottom of the post, which I did skip. Umm…perhaps you should consider affiliating with a company less eager to rip people off, yes?
Jen says
Hey Robb I am glad I came across this page. I was wondering how you became an “affiliate” with Thrive Market. I really enjoy the products, they are foods/stuff that I normally buy at the store (and pay too much for). Id have no problem signing up monthly but Id love to be able to refer others and make a commission!
Could you email me some more info? I went on the site and couldn’t really find an answer or is it if you sign up you’ll automatically get a Referral link?
Thanks, Jen

Robb Wolf says
I’ll look into this!
RuralMaine says
Balanced? I too am in the 30 day trial membership timeframe with Thrive market and just placed an order 2 days ago. When I went to tracking to see when my order might arrive, I find that expected delivery is not until the end of next week…this would be 8 days from when I placed my order. I understand that I live across the country (in the woods in Maine) from where this company is located, and I also understand that I may have been conditioned to more “instant gratification” with other internet purchases when it come to shipping times. However, over a week to receive an order still seems long. I am willing to suspend disbelief until my order does actually arrive (as maybe it will come sooner?), but I have a feeling I may cancel the membership. I do live a full hour drive from Whole Foods and Trader Joes and 30 minutes from any other store that sells whole, natural, or organic products. I will have to weigh the cost of gas and the 1 to 2 hours of driving it takes me to buy these products locally with the fairly compatible prices (not really discounted over prices I can find elsewhere). If I do decide to cancel, I hope the kinks have been worked out in this process, and I don’t have the troubles others have described.
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi! we are opening our east coast distribution center fall which will allow for faster ship times to you in Maine!
We’re looking forward to being able to accommodate the incredible growth and support from our East Coast Thrivers!
Debra says
Just found out about “Thrive” today. I can’t even access the website pages to start the trial membership.I am not on Facebook.I keep getting this error message,”no data received”.I don’t want a free trial. Ask them to email me about a nonrefundable 6 month membership. I will do that. Thanks!
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Debra! We would be more than happy to help! You can reach out to our member services department here: https://thrivemarket.com/faq/contact/. We can help you troubleshoot so that you can access Thrive Market.
james says
I live on the East Coast and from what I read, Thrive ships everything out of California. Food items & other products (with essential oils, fresh ingredients) can spoil & become useless easily in the summertime if they’re traveling in a 100+ degree FEDEX/UPS/USPS truck on their way to customers. Do they use dry ice for food & other products shipped that need to be temperature controlled… so they don’t spoil/melt?
Also why don’t they just attach a $5 fee for every order, or charge a $5 fee every month instead of charging people by the year! That would be more affordable for people in the long run, as many of us may skip a month or only need to order 4 times a year.
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi James! We will soon be opening a new fulfillment center in Indiana and have also implemented some temperature control measures for heat sensitive items such as chocolate and probiotics. For most members, an annual membership fee is the most cost effective option and a majority make up the cost of membership in two or three orders. We hope that you find that even with infrequent orders you are able to save significantly by shopping with Thrive Market!
Angel says
I found your site as I have been googling trying to find contact information for thrive market. I was not impressed with my products expiring the month I received them after placing my first order. I then found all the items I ordered at better prices else where. Two weeks into my trial membership I emailed them requesting to cancel. The email I got back stated we have went ahead and added another month for you to enjoy free. I didn’t ask for that or want that. Since then I have called ten plus times a day for two weeks straight and their number just beeps like a busy signal. Also no response aftet ten plus emails to them. I should add the reason I have been contacting them is they charged me for my membership. Not only did they charge me but the bank card I used I only transfer money to as needed. Good thing I had my credit card with as I put $40 in the account for gas and my card wouldn’t work saying insufficient funds. Get home and check. They not only took my $40 plus put me almost $20 in the negative but then I was hit with an overdraft fee of $28. So a company who is supposed to save me money just cost me over six weeks of frustration and almost $90. Is there any additional contact info not listed online? Has anyone had any luck with getting their
Money back?
Monica says
No luck for me and you probably won’t get your money back. They stall on emails and won’t answer the phone. They sure are taking advantage of people who want to eat healthy at a fair price.
Misha (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Monica – We would never intentionally stall on emails or refuse to issue a refund.
Our mission is to make healthy living attainable for everyone and that would go against what we believe in completely.
We have no intention of keeping anyone that doesn’t believe in our mission. We have experience incredible growth, and as a brand new company are experiencing some growing pains, which unfortunately includes slower response times to the massive influx of new members and inquiries.
We are working very hard to get back to everyone as quickly as possible.

Hi Angel- were you able to get in touch with a specialist? We’d be happy to help you out!
Laura Curtin says
I tried the 30 day free trial membership to compare it to Amazon.com and while I saved a tiny bit on some items, I noticed the packaging was SO small on many items that it is not cost effective. For example. I had to buy three bottles of syrup to the one size at Amazon.com; all the wasted plastic in those bottles! Another drawback is that I was unable to buy in bulk, which would have saved in packaging and in cost. When I received my order, it seemed like all the boxes, bags, jars and jugs were sized for a tiny child’s kitchen. Finally it took almost 2 weeks to receive the order. I have cancelled my subscription and will be ordering from Amazon again. (Hopefully I do not have trouble with cancellation as so many others have experienced!) I can get bulk, larger containers and quick shipping with them. I don’t mind paying a few pennies more to save time, energy and the environment.

I’ve already cancelled directly on the website and I only get notification that a representative will be in contact. I will go to the State Attorney General and the BBB of their area. I won’t play games with this unprofessional group.

Hi Alex – we’ve experienced incredible growth and we find that our new online portal is the best way for us to get back to everyone as quickly as possible.
As a brand new company we are experiencing the growing pains of our rapid influx of new members, but we definitely don’t have any intention of playing games.
That would absolutely go against our mission entirely.
Alex says
I’ll make it known that my comment regarding membership has not passed moderation? Now, I really trust this company and it’s pushers.
Stevie says
We were thinking of joining Thrive until I did a bit of research. Their stance is clearly against GMO foods. But they need to research just who owns the products on their site. Larabars – owned by General Mills, Arrowhead Mills – Hain, Earth’s Best – Hain, Annie’s Homegrown – General Mills, Late July – Snyder’s/Lance…I could go on but you get my drift. If they were truly interested they wouldn’t only look at the product but would find out who owns the company. These big companies spend millions to battle against GMO labeling and every organic or non-gmo product you buy puts money in the pockets of these very companies. I find it hard to believe that the folks at Thrive are so clueless that they wouldn’t know this. Yet these products prevail on their site…leaving me to believe their mission isn’t really all that noble, just looking out for their bottom line.
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Stevie! We appreciate your concern and are happy to hear that you are united with us on our mission against GMO foods. We choose to support the organic and non-GMO products that reflect our values regardless of who owns them. Their success sends a message to companies that doing the right thing and doing the most profitable thing are not mutually exclusive. We remain incredibly in support of GMO labeling and post about it frequently on our blog. We hope that you will check out some of our articles!
Stevie says
Well, I guess my comment didn’t pass moderation, too??? Only happy, fluffy comments allowed, I guess…

I’m very sorry to see you and so many other supposed “health advocates” serving as sales people/affiliates for Thrive Market. They may be offering “good deals” in terms of prices, but they are also supporting the members of the GMA like General Mills by selling their “healthy” line of products, e.g. Larabars, Muir Glen, etc. You are profiting from the sales of these products and encouraging others to support those who are fighting the labeling of GMOs! Whose side are your on? This causes me to question your entire mission and makes everything you say suspect. See The Boycott List dot org.
Robb Wolf says
Karen-
As TM grows it will have more latitude in who it picks to do business with. As an early investor I bring significant sway to these topics. I just got back from 5 days spent promoting the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund and PolyFace Farms. I support everything you are talking about, but the reality of life is one must sometime make concessions to further the overall cause. Many grass fed meat producers cannot “make it” unless they ship their products. That means styrofoam, dry ice and gas. NOT really moving in the right direction, yes? Given time most of these producers find local markets that will make the need to ship irrelevant. So, looking at the long term picture, this seems a worthwhile trade-off.
I appreciate your passion here but I also call bullshit on your straw-man attack. If you disagree with me in one area all other thoughts I have put on this blog since 2007 is suspect? REALLY? I’d label that either weak minded or so incapable of compartmentalization as to be pathologic. If I was actually who you are painting me to be I’d have deleted all the negative comments to date, likely including yours. Instead, they see the light of day and foster discussion. I will continue to work on all these sustainability and food freedom areas. If you feel inclined, do what TM has done, and do it in a way that meets the idealism you promulgate. My goal is to have TM be exactly what you are describing, but that will not happen straight out of the gate. That’s my honest assessment of the situation. You can respect it, or hate me. Your call.
Robb Wolf says
Karen-
I need to ask: Where DO you shop such that all the standards you lay out here are met? Farmers market only? Clearly Whole Foods, TJ’s or any conventional super market are off limits, yes?
Amelia Cates says
Robb,
You really act and respond like an owner who is trying to make money off of this concept and company. Too bad.
Robb Wolf says
Amelia-
Did you “read” the post on this? If you had taken the time I said I was both an investor AND that I hoped it would be successful. It’s fascinating that this position, juxtaposed with me posting all negative comments is in some way “too bad.”

I ordered a product on august 10th, it was a reorder of my original order. After I did not receive it in the 5 day period that I received my original order I logged in to my account and tried to track the shipment (FedEx) the tracking number was “invalid” I sent an email (august 19)to “support” and they replied 48 hours later that they were looking into it. I asked tospeak to a human………. they sent me a welcome to Thrive email. Now on August 25th I still have no product have been charged for it (Aug 12) But First on August 10th the hit my card for a membership fee then charged my card for the order on Aug. 12th. I will be placing a complaint with the BBB and State attorney generals office. How sad I feel that a “Socially Conscious” Organization can take advantage of so many.

I’m having a horrible time getting any kind of response from Thrive. I emailed to cancel my membership and of course I heard back from Josh trying to get me to stay. He gave me an extra free month and offered me a year membership for $29.95 instead of $59.95. I accepted and was immediately charged the full price of $59.95! I’ve emailed multiple times and tried calling many times. I have not heard anything back and they never answer the phone! So, once I was “in” and charged for the membership, I can not get any kind of response. No amount of savings is worth the awful (or lack of) customer service! I am extremely frustrated! I want ALL of my money back!

I made one purchase at an extra 25% off with the free trial and decided without the additional 25% off their prices aren’t worth it. I emailed them to cancel my membership BEFORE the free trial ended. They emailed me back saying they were sorry to see me go and were extending the free membership another month. Then they charged me $59.95. When I replied to their email that I did not want the membership as my previous email stated, I got a response that they no longer use that email. I went on the website and have sent 2 more messages telling them to refund my money and got an email saying they got my message and it’s taking a bit longer than usual for their response. I still haven’t heard back from them or received a refund but I keep getting their advertising emails. I’m actually embarrassed that I’ve recommended this company to a few friends. I don’t think they’ve signed up for the trial membership yet and I’m going to advise them and anyone who asks me about Thrive Market to STAY AWAY!

I ordered from Thrive earlier this year and did get the email reminding me my membership would be charged, but then I promptly forgot (brain fog). When I emailed them back, they did offer me a less expensive option, but I had just lost my job, and no option was going to work. So they cancelled me with no problem.
I understand it can be frustrating, but all these nasty comments towards Rob are uncalled for. He doesn’t want to cheat you, but you guys are making him out to be the bad guy here. He may be an investor, but doesn’t do day to day operations… He’ll get to the problem and try to get it solved for you.
I hope they get more support people and get the problem solved for everyone’s sake. I’d go back when I can afford it. I loved the concept and the fact that Rob is behind it.
If you don’t like people pushing it, all you have to do is let it go… Are you going to stop watching tv because of the comnercials for crap? I can’t stand alcohol yet I subject myself to torture of watching commercials, seeing billboards of alcoholic beverages promoting a wonderful life, and watching people in restaurants drink… Sarcasm intended..

ROBB(er) is behind it alright.

I agree with Laura….I have ordered 4 times with Thrive and have had no problems…I have shopped and compared prices for 50 years…Do not believe what corporations tell you about retail prices they vary tremendously. I think Thrive is very fair in their pricing. I think the world is becoming very cruel, mean and aggressive…cells phones…wi-fi…chemical poisoning…pharmaceutical poisoning…sugar poisoning…etc…Be aware folks.. Thanks! Thrive Market for doing the right thing and I hope people do not believe the naysayers. Do not join, knowing you will cancel in the last three days… Give it a chance!!!
Robb Wolf says
Thanks Alice. I have a policy of approving all but outright trolling comments on my site but I’m getting the sense that a few people are just actively trying to paint Thrive in a bad light. I’m going to start looking at ISP’s and seeing if there is any consistency there.

I LOVE Thrive! Being holistic and wanting to take care of my body are very important to me and Thrive offers the products I know and love, among many others, at a significant discount As a chef and baker who is constantly buying ingredients from many sources I can confidently say their retail price points are fairly accurate. I have also lived all over the country and prices can vary significantly for the same item. I just placed my order and was also approved for a free Thrive-Gives membership. Have had wonderful, timely, professional and friendly customer service. They gave me an additional $10 off just for telling 10 friends about them. I greatly admire what they stand for and their commitment to help people get great quality food, bath & body products, and holistic remedies!

Wow. Just Googled “Problem with Thrive Market,” and found this site. I am now concerned after reading so many negative reviews. I just joined Thrive Market (less than 6 days ago) through another blogger (Mark Sisson) placing my first order. Immediately, I received a non-descript email announcing a delay with my order and then an invalid Tracking No. for FedEx. I am waiting to hear from Thrive. If I had first researched instead of just going by the blogger’s input, I admit that I would not have placed an order based on reviews from this site alone. To think, I almost placed a second order on the heels of my first and am glad I did not in light of my experience thus far and from what I’ve read on this site. Before arriving here, I was contemplating a cancellation thinking that my first order is a sign of things to come…then I find myself here. Now my mind is on product expiration dates and cancellation issues, “bumps in the road,” etc., etc.. Stress. I will hold on a little longer and will give conclusion.

I find it very unethical when THRIVE MARKET shows you how to cancel your membership online and sends you a confirmation reply, and then after 2 months THRIVE MARKET charges my card $59.95 for a membership that I did not want or authorize. I need THRIVE MARKET to credit back my card for the money they took from me ASAP!!!
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi James. We are so sorry for the misunderstanding. The email that we sent in response to your cancellation request informed you that we had added an extra free month to your trial based on your experience and was not a confirmation email. You should have also received a reminder email before the extended trial came to an end. We apologize if you did not see the email and we have verified that your account was canceled and refunded per your request on November 30th. Please always feel free to call or email us if we can assist further- we will be happy to help!
Rob says
I think they have good prices (it won’t match Costco or Walmart but it isn’t the same products) but the membership fee complicates things. I am just buying for myself so it is harder to justify than if I was buying for a family of 5.
Their idea of trying to help poor people buy organic, non-GMO products may be hurting them. I think there are more people who want to pay $30 for a membership than pay $60 for 2 memberships. I wonder how many poor people are concerned about GMO and organic. Most rich people aren’t.
One thing I didn’t care for what getting an email saying I had just saved over 3 times what my two orders had claimed I saved.
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Rob! Thank you for sharing this feedback. A few members did receive an email where the calculated savings ran into a glitch and either over or under-reported their savings. I made an account on Thrive just to purchase on item. I went to the “cancellation request” page and decided to cancel. I did this all in the month of November. I thought this meant my membership would be canceled and I would not get charged after the free trial. Well on Decemember 21st I was charged the heavy 59$ sub fee. I’ve emailed them twice the past two days and still no reply. I never even got an email after trying to cancel my membership in the beginning. I want my money back considering I TRIED canceling the subscription long ago. I only needed one item and never planned to continue shopping with Thrive. I want this resolved. Please.

I’ve been using Thrive for some time now, and there were not problems at all. However my last order was a huge hassle. I ordered on 1st January, and when if did not arrive for a week I contacted them to see where it is, customer service (Marcus) said the carrier got confused about the address and returned so he sent me the order again and said he will personally monitor it. I need to mention that I did not change the address as all, they were delivering before from Thrive to this address without any problems. On 8th I received an email from another customer service guy Juan mail that my address is not correct again. I tried to involve Marcus so I dont have to explain everything again, jet he did not respond so everything again with Juan, he than send the order for the third time! After 2 weeks the order arrives but not to my address, a doorman from a building one block away calls me to tell me it’s been delivered there. I than need to ask the super for the trolley to go there and pick it up since it’s two big boxes and I could not lift there. Really not cool.
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Anja- I am very sorry for the courier difficulties and we have followed up to your previous post and email. We have addressed the issue with our courier and reformatted your address in our system. We hope that you will reach back out if there is anything else that we can do to help!

Same story as what so many people describe, i.e., cancelled within 30 days in November, got an email offering a free month + 3 month membership for $19.95. Replied no thanks. I was just about to pay my most recent cc bill, when I saw that Thrive had charged my card in December.
I’m just writing so that any potential customers know that the shady practices are still going on as of Jan 2016, despite all the pretty apologies that Thrive Customer Service has made in this discussion since March 2015.
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Denise! I am truly sorry to hear that you were charged. Our team quickly follows up to all offer declinations. I was able to locate your charge based on the information above and can see that we did not receive your response to our offer, so we apologize for this. Our member services team is always happy to issue refunds for unused memberships and yours has already been issued. Please feel free to reach out at (866) 419-2174 if there’s anything else that we can do.

Same experience here. I tried to cancel weeks before the trial was to expire, and they wouldn’t cancel my membership. I had to contact my credit card to tell them this was a fraudelent charge and after hours of arguing they acquiesced and did a chargeback to this HIGHLY unethical company. For shame, using the good name of organic products to run a shady business! If anyone knows the CEO of this mafia enterprise, please post their name here, and I will contact him via LinkedIn to personally give him a piece of my mind.
Oh, and Robb…wake up and get a clue. No amount of commissions is worth being associated with this scam enterprise!
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Greg- we are sorry to hear that you had this experience and this is in no way in accordance with our policies or membership model. We do make offers for alternative membership options but under no circumstances do we refuse to cancel a trial membership or unused membership. I would absolutely like to look into this and hope that you will call (866) 419-2174 and ask for me Michelle so that I can help.

I’ve seen a lot of cancellation problems and the company comments to reach out to them at a given phone number. What I have not seen is any follow-up comments by the folks who have the problem and followed through with “reaching out” to the company by phone. Has anyone finally gotten their refund or the cancellation problem resolved? Please follow through and let us know how you’re making out!
bonnie says
Hi Rick…..I will definitely post the results of my situation when Thrive Market refunds the $29.95 that they recently (yesterday) charge they made to my credit card for a FREE TRIAL membership that cancelled. But if no refund or credit on my credit card and I will go to FB, Better Business Bureau and any other avenues open to me. Why is it necessary to reach out by phone when I have already cancelled…….that is the beauty of online memberships and/or shopping….no need to wait for someone to answer the phone, check on the puter, check my account, etc etc etc. Sounds like there is a major issue or issues with their website and email system. But alas, no time to help them with their system. Just need a refund of $29.95 for which I have not or will not receive any products or service. Thank you.
Dave says
Very satisfied customer. I am sure Thrive will work out the problems. Go public so I can invest ! I hope all the complainers get their problems solved .Most of them are probably part time clean eaters anyway.

Scam is still in full force at thrive market, I email them 3 times and each time they respond with a different price for the membership fee, still no confirmation of cancellation. Waiting for a reply on 4th email, this time I told them don’t care how much it cost, cancel my account!
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi T! We like to provide alternative membership options based on member feedback if it makes a Thrive Market membership more accessible for him or her. Dori Martino King says
Rob,
I really resent your implication that the people who have had bad experiences are “trying to paint Thrive in a bad light”. Since we are all expressing the same problems, I can’t imagine how you can justify such comments. I would certainly not waste my valuable time to write, unless I had, in fact, had this experience. I have written to Thrive and had exchanges with ‘Alex’ on three separate occasions. He has offered a free month, a reduced fee of $19.95 and a reduced fee of $29.95. However, I JUST WANT TO CANCEL! Nevertheless, just as almost everyone else has experienced, I was fraudulently charged the full fee of $59.95!
I WANT MY MONEY REFUNDED, at which time I never want to have anything to do with this awful company EVER again!!!!
Dori King
Michelle (Thrive Market Member Services) says
Hi Dori- we are sorry that you were charged unexpectedly. We did not receive a response to our offer which is why you were charged but your account should have been updated to reflect the 3 month membership price of $19.95 and we apologize that it was not. It looks like you were refunded earlier today but if there is anything else that we can do to help, please do not hesitate to call (866) 419-2174.
Princess Walnut says
Bought a few ebook bundles that had Thrive offers in them and for some reason could not bring myself to activate the free trial. Maybe it was the cheesy way many health bloggers find the same products and gush about them only to learn of the dangers or find a company who they like more and then push that… Yes they need to make a living but it’s gotten rediculous the almost obsession with finding the latest fad. So I largely ignore sales pitches as we have local companies I source from instead. For folks without that option, online sites are a blessing for those without local access.
Today I finally decided to purchase a few things online that I can’t find in town and thought due to large selection on Thrive, and of course I got an email for free item offer from a blogger. The prices really are competitive, and I do pay more for some the items locally so I was interested initially. Once the membership cost factored in, over a year would probably just break even with what I buy though or close enough to it, but I was going to give it an honest trial. (And meant didn’t have to be in traffic going to speciality stores to find.)
I was about to order several items until I saw a comment somewhere saying difficult to cancel membership which stopped me in my tracks. I’m not against memberships, we pay membership to use online portal for CSA to choose our own mix of stuff and add ons, and like many, a costco one too. It’s the way the customer service people for Thrive just kept saying on this forum that users were charged because they said they wanted to cancel, support team member sent counter offer, and the customer after back and forth of this must have missed an email, thought the no they told staff meant no, (or thought their multiple no and cancel meant no) but support team member took not getting a reply from user about counter offer to mean a yes and then charge said card. How is that not the very definition of unethical? It would not have been difficult to have your website wizard add a button to cancel membership like most sites have, not to mention saved man hours replying to massive emails. The reps here also openly acknowledged this strange counter offer and said users didn’t reply so membership continued, leading me to believe this is part of a company policy. (Michelle’s last message to Dori shows what looks like her telling Dori she didn’t reply back to 19.95 counter offer so got billed for it comment. Why would her account be updated to reflect the 19.95 price if she tried to cancel? That was the counter offer from support after she said cancel.) This many support team members can’t possibly take it upon themselves to act in this way just for the hell of it, could they?
Yes I think to an extent many of us are spoiled by such services like same day delivery, curb side pick up, whole foods has box you can just open and someone did your shopping for you… an online order taking a week is not what makes me upset and users should know that a company offering unlimited free shipping if you buy so much still pays that cost somehow, so might be why fee yearly to use site to offset that. Amazon went from $25 free ship to $35 and now it’s up to $49 unless it’s for books. So even they know it can be unsustainable business model long term. We have all gone trigger happy ordering online. Also it’s upsetting to see so many of us into healthier lifestyle for ourselves and our families, but not support local or realize the true cost of things. The costs on Amazon are below costs mom and pop stores can even buy items for due to their bulk purchasing power. Well folks, if we want to have living wages in this country, we have to invest not only in our health but the livelihood of the areas we live in. This has made me realize that I might just pay extra at local health food store because they are kind, knowledgable, and have good customer service.
Just can’t bring myself to order. I had so hoped that Thrive was legit due to all the blogger support, and sometimes the convenience of online order after busy periods of life is needed, so I’m naturally disheartened to read the issue still hasn’t been fixed on their website yet.

Ouch……I recently tried the 30-day FREE TRIAL and found that the items were much more expensive than I expected and shipping fee is outrageous. So, I cancelled and sure enough got email offers to keep my membership for $29.95 but did not accept that offer. Sure enough, my credit card was just charged $29.95. Wish I would have seen this discussion earlier and I would never have given them my credit card for a FREE TRIAL. I guess I am out 29.95 and lesson learned. I have emailed them, so lets see if I get an answer back. I don’t have time for all the hassels that people are describing in this discussion thread…..so, if my refund does not arrive in a timely fashion, I will be going to FB, the Better Business Bureau and anyone else I can to get the word out. Thanks to all that have posted here

Hi Bonnie – Thanks for your feedback.
On average the prices we offer for each brand are 25-50% lower than other retailers 90% of the time. Shipping is also always free on all orders over $49 and ranges between $5.95-$7.95 for orders that are under $49.
We’re also sorry to hear that you had trouble cancelling. You can contact membership services at 866-419-2174 and they’d be happy to cancel and refund your unused membership as it not our intention to keep anyone is not interested in shopping with us, or feels they do not support our social mission and values.
As soon as your refund is issued, you should see it in your account within 5-7 days depending on your banking institution.
We’re sorry to hear that your experience was not on par with our usual standards.

If you call the 800 number they will give you a refund. I just called and the girl was very nice.

Shame on you Robb Wolf. I have followed you for years and read your books. Thrive Market is a total scam. They charged me $59.95 for a membership and they say they will refund it, but they don’t. Emails claim to give me a refund, but it doesn’t happen. This company needs legislative investigation. Robb, I think you have made a huge mistake with Thrive.

Thank you for checking out Thrive Market. We’re sorry to hear that you’re experiencing difficulties cancelling. I had signed up for a free trial of this product, went through the cancellation process, and never noticed an email response offering the lower-cost membership. When I saw that they charged my account, I sent an email and then while I was waiting for a response Googled “tried to cancel Thrive account” and found this message board. Needless to say, I was horrified and almost in a panic that I would never be able to cancel my account without taking legal action. I called Thrive and talked to a gentleman (I forget his name) that promised to personally cancel my account, which never occurred. Looking back I think it was an honest mistake, but at the time, coupled with the messages I read here, I was convinced this was an actual scam. I send a second email to Thrive a few days later, and received a response from Lynque that my account would be cancelled and my membership fee refunded. That time, I received a second email with the details of the refund transaction, and saw the refund in my bank account that same week. I also stopped receiving Thrive email announcements, so I am convinced that my account was properly closed. I would strongly recommend communicating via email so that you have record of your conversations. At this point I don’t believe that this is an intentional theft scheme. I do believe that this is a real company that is not trying to steal money, and that their intention is to cancel memberships when asked. I just think that their membership cancellation process is unnecessarily complex, and they’re not properly staffed to handle the amount of hands-on attention that each cancellation requires. I hope that they’re able to revamp their cancellation process and save their company’s reputation, because I do now believe that they are a real and honest company, and both customer service representatives seemed kind. To the consumer, my advice would be that if you think it’s unlikely that you’ll want a lasting membership, don’t even bother with the free trial – it’s far more trouble than it’s worth. If you’re 99% sure that you will want to go through with the membership, I say go for it.

This is what their “cancellation portal” says as far as my account:
It looks like your paid membership doesn’t expire until Jun 2, 2016. Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to assist you.
Today I got this –
Apr 25, 06:18
Hi Bev,
I’d love to hear more about your experience and why you’re considering ending your membership. More than anything, we’d love to keep you as a member.
A healthy lifestyle is our number one priority. That’s why we’ve expanded our product offerings beyond foods, but into household products as well as furniture. We’ve even launched our own private label that is exclusively found here and includes coconut oil, tomato sauce, superfoods and flours.
There’s a ton to miss out on, and I want you to be in the know. I can offer you a pretty nice deal which will lower your rate to $29.95 for the upcoming year. That breaks your cost down to only $2.50 per month. This offer empowers you to take advantage of savings up to 50% off retail, and the hundreds of new products we add each month.
If for any reason you’re not interested in the reduced price offer, simply reply to this email. In the interim, I’ll update your account to reflect the new offer, just in case it works for you.
Please let me know if you have specific concerns or questions about our services that I can address for you.
I’ll be happy to help!

I had the exact same reply from them. Note how they automatically sign you up for renewal and you have to read their email carefully to realize that they did not just cancel your membership as you requested. You actually have to reply and say no to decline; otherwise, they assume you are accepting it. This is a really shady business practice.

You should add to “how it works” that you make it virtually impossible to cancel your membership. “Cancel any time” is NOT true.
Sonya Lee says
It blows my mind that a company that calls itself a “socially conscious online store” operates in such an unethical manner. The way they handle their membership is downright fraudulent.
As with everyone here, after my trial membership was over, I notified them I did not want to get their annual membership. Then they sent me an email offering me something like $29.95 for six months membership. I was not interested and ignored their email, assuming that they would take that as “no”. A few months later, we realized they had charged us for an annual membership. We were furious, but since it had been a few months, we decided to just use it and buy more items, making sure to change the setting to opt out of automatic renewal.
(Note that savings are not that great compared to other stores like Amazon. Thrive strangely shows an inflated “regular price” in their website and makes it look like you are saving more than you actually are.)
My membership expires next week and I noticed how they started sending me a lot of promotional emails that I can only use in July (after my membership expires).
I just received another email today, informing me that my membership expires and they were going to automatically renew my membership! What the hell? I wrote to them right away and told them not to renew.
They wrote back to me with an offer of $29.95 for six months membership. I wrote back again and said I refuse to deal with such unethical company and i did not want them to renew my membership.
They wrote to me again with another offer but this time $29.95 for entire year! It actually says I have to reply to their email if I want to decline (this is how they got me the first time). I wrote to them again and told them I do not wish to renew and they’d better not make me write back to them again.
I have never dealt with such an unethical, predatory company before, especially for someone who claims to be socially conscious. Do they even know what it means to be “socially conscious”?
There are health practitioners I follow who sponsor Thrive Market and I plan to write to them. If they continue to promote them, I will stop following them.

First of all, the product itself was great – but then again its not like they make it.
However, like many others have said, they are not trustworthy. I was not given any information concerning a membership when making my purchase. No where did it say anything about it! So it came as a surprise when one day money was overdraw from my bank account, a significant amount. I contacted my bank right away and it has been a month long mess since, and I even had to switch to a new card! It was a truly terrible feeling to know my money was taken from me like that without my permission. It was also very uncomfortable to see that they kept all my card information on my account, to me that is very invading, especially when I did not say they could keep it on file. I will NEVER purchase from this company again.

Thrive Market’s tactics are absolutely HORRIBLE. I was looking online to see if others had issues canceling their membership. I see that their strong-arm tactics are RAMPANT! What a ridiculous company. You can get the same low prices elsewhere online, WITHOUT a membership fee – not to mention jumping through hoops to cancel an alleged “free trial membership.”
Not to mention that after I’d opted out of their annoyingly frequent promotional emails, they started up again after a few days. Isn’t this called SPAM?
I highly recommend you shop elsewhere.

The products at Thrive look nice Robb, but their business model is very shady. I received a free promotional jar of raw honey for a $1.95 shipping cost. The product was decent but then I get a $59 bill on my credit statement a month later for a membership I never knowingly ordered. I will defiantly not do business with a company that has deceptive practices, in this case a sneaky $59 membership fee. At least at Costco I know upfront there is a yearly fee which I don’t mind paying. I hope they really are issuing me a refund as promised.

I have also experienced cancellation issues. After my membership autorenewed last year (my own fault due to lack of vigilance), I would have sworn I selected an option on their website to disable autorenew–an option I can no longer locate. Possibly because I only have access to their mobile site now? Or maybe I do not remember correctly. In any case, I got an email today saying my account is going to autorenew again (a warning I did not get last year). So I went to their website, but neither the link in the email nor my account or membership pages located via their site menu offered any way to cancel or stop the autorenewal. So I did a google search and found their cancellation portal, but submitting a request that way only produces a page that says basically, “Your account doesn’t expire until July 22,” and makes no mention of actually canceling my membership! So I wrote them at the email still listed on their website, help at thrivemarket dot com, telling them that I want to cancel and can’t seem to do it through their cancellation portal. And now, according to their customer service reps in the comments here, that email is no longer being monitored? Hopefully that has changed in the interim. I only wrote to them a couple hours ago, so hopefully I will hear back. It is very frustrating to see all the comments here from reps directing people to a cancellation portal that doesn’t seem to cancel anything! If they’re not actively dishonest, they certainly have very poor site design in this regard, and the practice (acknowledged here by their own reps) of responding to cancellation requests with offers which must be opted out of (rather than into) after a person has already requested cancellation is reprehensible. Offering reduced prices to try to keep a customer is fine, but if the company receives no response to such an offer after a customer has already asked to cancel, that customer should not be charged–you can’t just assume that someone is going to agree to purchase something and charge them for it against their stated wishes without their consent, even at a reduced price! I am not convinced they are outright trying to defraud people, but they definitely seem to be trying to keep people as customers by making it so difficult to escape that people just give up and accept the charges. A simple cancellation option easily located via their website that actually works and emails out an immediate confirmation would solve all these problems.

This is still going on – here are excerpts of my three attempts to avoid a $59.95 membership fee. I also called my credit card company to have Thrive Market blocked and of course will check each credit card statement carefully.

With your first purchase on Thrive, you’ll start a free 30-day membership trial. See how much you save. Cancel any time.
Attempt #1 to cancel an automatic renewal of membership
July 18 – I submitted a request via the website to cancel my membership
July 18 – received this response from Thrive Market (excerpt)
I’d be happy to extend your free trial for an additional month if you would like more time to see all the exciting new products and deals that we have in store. This change is already reflected on your account.
However, if you’d prefer not to take advantage of this offer, please reply to this email.
Attempt #2 to cancel an automatic renewal of membership
July 19 – I email again confirming that I do not want an additional month and that my decision is to cancel the membership.
July 20 – I receive this email from Thrive Market (excerpt)
Before you go, we’d like to make you just one more very special offer: the price of $29.95 for the ENTIRE YEAR as an alternative. This discounted membership will allow you the same access to savings at half the price. This change is already reflected on your account.
However, if you’d prefer not to take advantage of this offer and discontinue your membership, please reply to this email and I will make that adjustment right away.
Attempt #3 to cancel an automatic renewal of membership
July 20 – I email the following:
If Thrive Market does not immediately confirm in writing that my membership is cancelled I will file a formal complaint with my state Attorney General’s Office. My previous requests have not been honored, and Thrive is not following its own policy that states I can cancel anytime. Instead I am instructed again to please reply if I really want to cancel.
Enough!

I have filed a complaint with the BBB for not being upfront. I am trying to call my credit card company to keep the charge from going through. I wanted to share my experience. Yes, I was very annoyed that it wasn’t easy to cancel from the website or to find out how to cancel. However, I called the number that’s listed a few times here and it’s took less than five minutes. Of course the rep tried to get me to extend, but he was very polite and not pushy at all. And frankly that’s his job to try to get me to stay on. If you want your membership cancelled quickly, just call them. And remember, people respond with respect when you treat them with respect. Sending emails will always take longer. Be nice to each other and Good luck!

Ridiculous. I’ve been trying to cancel my free trial for a couple weeks and am now closing in on 5 days left to do it. On the Thrive app, in the account tab where it tells you when your membership is renewing, there is a cancel membership link at the very bottom of the page. I’ve clicked on it several times and am just redirected to the website to login… where it does not allow me to log in. Why should I have to log onto the website when I have the app and am logged in there? It just takes you in fucking circles with no end in sight. Why put a “cancel” option on the app if it doesn’t actually let you cancel?
And the link they keep posting here, in what seems to (rightly) have become the complaint center… the link that is supposed to take you to the cancellation page, just redirects me to the home page of the Thrive app. WTF? I do not want to shop. I want to cancel my trial. From the comments I’ve read here, it seems I’ll probably end up being charged, regardless of whether I email them or speak with someone. Fucking bullshit runaround.

Every single person who has a problem with Thrive’s ridiculous and shady subscription and cancellation process needs to put in a complaint at the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) complaint website. The company you are complaining about MUST resolve the problem in a timely fashion when you use this method. Plus it makes the FTC aware that there is a problem with a particular company and its policies. And the FTC actually has some clout, rather than the BBB or a random blog site.
Personally Iv’e got no beef with a subscription model. But I do have a problem when it is rigged so that you are signing up for things without realizing it then making it nearly impossible to cancel. And don’t get me started on yearly autorenewals without an email that lets you opt out before the renewal.
Besides, with Thrive, unless you don’t have access to a market that carries these types of items, there really isn’t much savings. The discounts are not really discounts because they use a hugely inflated “regular” price to begin with, so the discount price ends up being almost the same as regular price at the market.

I can’t believe how many people have had the same experience I have. I saw a coupon for them online, I made a purchase and then to find out they charged me this year and last year with no notice whatsoever. There was nothing during checkout that ever mentioned a cancellation fee. This is illegal and fraudulent to charge my credit card without authorization. I feel a class action lawsuit coming on. To make matters worse they don’t even tell you they are charging you. Had I know I would have been using it for the entire last year. This is entirely sneaky. Not happy with them and will never recommend to anyone. By the time you pay the fee you do not save any money at all.
Tiara says
Opps autocorrect, not cancellation fee subscription fee*

Hi Tiara- We’re so sorry to hear that our Thrive Market Membership model wasn’t clear to you. We do display this information on our checkout page, and our membership fee is what allows us to offer our entire Thrive Market catalog at 25-50% off retail. If you do wish to cancel, our Member Service Team will be happy to assist you right away! You can contact them at (866) 419-2174 Monday-Friday, 7am-4pm; Saturday, 8am-5pm Pacific Standard Time, or submit a request here: https://thrivemarket.com/faq/index/cancellation/
With that being said, we hope you’ll consider that our membership fee breaks down to just under $5/month, and with products 25-50% below retail value, most members make back this cost within just 2-3 orders!
Hope you have a great rest of your day.

I too suffered endless problems with canceling my membership. I got conflicting emails from Thrive about what was going on. I finally got things sorted out after over half a year. Then, lately, I receive an email stating my subscription was about to be renewed! I told them to cancel again. So far so good. I also removed my credit card info from their site, and if I get charged again, they’ll be looking at Federal fraud for holding onto my credit card info against my wishes, and after I did exactly what they told me to do to have that info expunged from their server(s).

The person I spoke with at thrive.com about cancelling my account was actually snarky and intentionally mean. I’m glad that I cancelled dealings with this company! It was hard to cancel. They did not know where my email was, it was a big run around. They could not answer my questions if my acount was cancelled or if my credit card would be charged if I removed it.

hello Laura!
just a few minutes ago, the same thing happened to me, but worse.
I’m a missionary in South Korea, & was also charged the almost $60 annual fee without my knowledge & to a foreign credit card (samsung card) since my job is overseas, even though the shipping & features are to the continental US.
so please help me have a great day by removing that charge since i won’t be using these services.
thank you in advance for your assistance re: this matter.

sorry, not Laura, but Malik.
thank you in advance Malik..

Please let us know if this was not your experience.

I also had a horrible experience with Thrive in trying to cancel my trial membership. If there is a way to do this online without interacting with a rep, it is not obvious. I called and was subjected to their ‘customer service’ department which had a bad connection (doing business on cell phone?) so I had to repeat all of my information OVER and OVER and then when he finally got my account pulled up, he kept trying to convince me to extend the trial, do a discounted membership and when I still said no, he asked WHY!! JUST CANCEL IT!! I was literally YELLING into the phone. I wish I had researched them ahead, the internet is full of reviews of their shadiness but for some reason MANY paleo bloggers are pushing them with discount codes. Very distasteful.

Deceptive and dishonest company.
Paid for a year of membership .. then when I asked to not renew .. they canceled my membership .. didn’t even fulfil the year contract that I had already paid for.
What did I expect from the company who surprised me with a $59.99 annual membership fee a couple of weeks after I ordered their deceptive “special” try us out email. They had the disclosure about how they were going to rip[ you off later well hidden . They are deceitful and dishonest, Do not do business with them.
Kristin Koehnen says
I would like to say that I have been trying for weeks to get off Thrive’s email list. They are very disrespectful to their customers. If you want to cancel, you might be stuck paying them and getting emails until you a) change your credit card number, or b) get a different email address. They do not do customer service, and in my book that makes them a company I don’t do business with.
