Dr. Joe Brasco’s Gut Check!
Not sure if you have checked out the forum lately but world renowned gastroenterologist, Dr. Joe Brassco has set up shop and is ready to help folks with their IBS, Crohn’s and other poop related problems. Joe is an old friend of Loren Cordain’s and an expert on not just paleo but also the proper application of pharmaceuticals to manage and heal a host of GI related issues. Tell folks about the forum and make sure to post questions for Dr. Brasco in the comments section as he will be a future guest on the podcast.
Future Podcast Guests!
I’m tired of hearing Greg and I talk so I know you guys must be tired of us! So, now that I’m getting a little bit of a schedule down we will start seeing more folks on the podcast. If you have questions for any of these folks just do something like this:
For: Dr. Brassco
Question: Why is the sky blue?
this will make it easy for us to grab these and have them ready for the podcast.
Guests:
Dr. Joe Brasco. He is the guy I just mentioned above…in case you forgot already!
Brad Davidson. Brad is an expert in hormonal modulation and training of females, although he is exceptionally well rounded as a strength coach. If you are XX chromosome and have questions about leaning out, this is your guys to ask. Brad might answer some XY questions too, if hee is in a good mood!
Mark Bell + John Welbourn = more than 300kg of fun! For those of you living under a rock, or overly enamored with 85 min AMRAP’s, Mark Bell is a world champion power lifter and a BIG smart dude. he was talking to another big smart dude, John Welbourn and Mark started tinkering with his nutrition…doing this “paleo” thing which seems to have made him bigger, stronger and has improved his recovery! Whoodda thunk’t it! And the low-bar back-squatting crowd would have you believe you can only get big by eating like shit. If you have questions about getting big, strong and fast, this is your podcast. if you are afraid of losing your abs, just keep walking kiddo.
Nate Miyaki. Nate is lean, smart and has a name that a Samurai would be envious of. Nate is a super smart guy and I’ve liked his stuff for a long time.
Scotty Hagnas. Scotty is one of the unsung heroes in the CrossFit and S&C scene. He has been at the world champion level in trials bike competition, he has studied under Poliquin, OPT, Coach Scott Sonnon, Coach christopher Sommer (GymnasticsBodies) and Ido Portal. When I’m stumped on a topic Scotty is the person I call to get some clarity and work through ideas. In addition to being a great coach, Scotty has been a phenomenal friend and has stuck with us through thick & thin. Scotty was one of those CF gyms that still hosted us after our parting with HQ. Where some “friends” rolled over and showed their soft, nugety underbelly, Scotty stood by us. I’d take a bullet for that guy. If you have questions about biosignature, the perils of low-carb paleo in hard training athletes or Scotty’s thoughts on any of the coaches I mentioned above, ask away!
Ok, that’s it for now, make sure to spread the word about Dr. Brasco’s forum and ask some good questions!

Tired of hearing you and Greg talk??? Seriously? No es posible!! But wow! Awesome line-up!! 🙂

I agree it is NOT possible to listen to them via podcast…I learn so much and look forward to each and every one. While material may be pedestrian to Robb and Greg, it is more about the anecdotal comments while answering a question that foster a deeper dive into the subject matter and very often touch upon things (fostering my own research) that open my mind further.

My brother can’t live without his daily Prilosec for GERD. I suggested he might have SIBO, and his primary physician agreed but wouldn’t prescribe a trial antibiotic because he is an osteopath. My brother then went to a gastrenterologist who said there was nothing wrong with taking Prilosec for the rest of your life, after all, he does, and he is only 36.
What options does my brother have?
Brian Buehler says
Great question, I had taken those horrible pills for several years not realizing the malnutrition dangers. Regular MD thought that I too would be on them forever. Chris Kresser has a great series of GERD articles that really helped me toward the right path. That said, a second line of logic would be great and much appreciated by me as well.

I recently found out that my low levels of free T are a result of a prolactinoma which emits to much prolactin which then binds my precious free T.
My Question ton any of you experts with experience in that matter:
Are there any other (natural) ways to kill that adenoma than taking dopamine agonists like bromocriptine or cabergoline?
Would a strict paleo – ketogenic diet be beneficial as we all know that tumor growth is stunned by a ketogenic diet?
Thank you so much

Question: I suffered from diverticulitis (leading to a sigmoid resection after an acute attack with perforation (confirmed via CAT scan, as I recall despite my morphine-induced haze at the time…). My surgeon and my gastro suggested I stop eating junk and fried food and eat more fiber. I found this odd since I’d done just that for the 20 years prior to this attack. (I had just turned 40, this was my second acute attack, the first being at 26.)
I’ve since discovered that wheat and seed oils are extremely reliable triggers of diverticular pain (particularly at the resection incision).
I’m somewhat concerned after this, as my long-term plan included living to my 90s, and I worry that I might run out of colon.
Do you have any suggestions for me after my resection and others facing a resection due to diverticulitis?
Andy Tijerina says
Maybe just kind of a deviation from this question, but…
Dr. Brassco
Question: Can you also explain difference in the etiology and treatment of diverticulosis vs diverticulitis.

Nice … Ordering as we speak!

For Dr. Brasco and Robb,
I am a 48 year old Type 1 diabetic with severe gastroparesis, diagnosed by an RR study of 2%. Dr. put me on Myoplex low carb shakes after which I became sick (vomiting, dehyrated 3 times in 6 months) so I started making my own liquids and have not been sick in 2 years. The liquids are green juice and smoothies (don’t get mad Robb!) made with greens, avocado, coconut milk/oil, nuts, raw eggs, a bit of stevia, no fruit. Once a day I eat soft poached eggs or raw goat cheese with blended steamed veggies or blended stew or soup made with grass fed meat. I do not have physical symptoms with solid food when eating out but I will often have low blood sugar after meals with elevated blood sugar later. I do paleo, except for stevia and raw goat cheese, low carb (30 grams daily) which keeps my A1C 5.6 – 6.0, the gastroparesis seems to be improving. Robb, I’ve heard you say “NO green juice or smoothies”. I’m curious as to why blended cooked foods are better than green juice or smoothies from whole raw food? I don’t really enjoy them but I thought it was my healthiest option. I would like to lower my A1C, could the liquids be making that as difficult as the gastroparesis? Do you or Dr. Brasco have any other or better suggestions for me? Thank you!

For Dr. Brassco:
Question: My diagnosis is IBS. I have been following a 90% Paleo diet for about a year and feel better but not perfect. The things I cheat with are some oils – store bought mayo/salad dressing, some dairy occasionally and very occasionally, some gluten free grains and sugar. My sister is also IBS and has been following a low FODMAP diet and feels much better. What do you have to say about the Low FODMAP diet? I’d rather not have to follow such an intricate do/don’t eat list – Paleo is much easier for real life, but I wonder if maybe I would feel better on the Low Fodmap plan.
Many thanks!

Robb,
Not sure how involved you are with the PaleoFX DVD Pre-sale however the website states shipping is included in the price quoted under the FAQs yet when I go to add the DVD set to the cart it adds $20 shipping at checkout taking the total from $197 to 217.
I put in a ticket with no response so I just figured I’d drop a line here in case anyone else was having the same issue. No rush obv considering it’s a Pre-Sale.
“Shipping: All shipping will be through UPS Ground or similar carrier for US orders and is included in the price.”

I look forward to hearing the webcast hosted by Dr. Brasco. I just met him today in HSV and had a pretty intense appointment with him. He told me about this website and me and my husband are seriously going to give this a whirl. This is all very intimidating and I would be a liar if I didn’t say overwhelming. I am really tired of being sick, and sick of being tired. Wish me luck I am new at this and so is my husband! I look forwad to the podcast. Knowledge is power… Regards, Tammy & Ken
Robb Wolf says
TAmmy-
don;t let it overwhelm OR intimidate. You have likely eaten thousands of paleo meals in your life (eggs & fruit? salad with grilled chicken?). It’ll take some tinkering, that’s it. and the results will damn sure be worth the effort.

Not sure where to post this so I am posting here. Can you tell me if eating Paleo would help overactive bladder?? I have had this problem for years and some days are worse then others. I use the restroom frequently especially after a meal but I probably don’t drink as much water as I should because I get sick of going to the bathroom every 5 minutes. An example of how much I use the restroom after I eat lunch is probably about 5 times within a half hour and that doesn’t count me going the first time and then is seems like minutes later I have to hit it again. Any input on this would be great! Thanks!
