Great podcast! It seems like the military health system in general and the VA health care system in particular would be very interested in partnering with Virta since the beneficiaries are long-term to lifelong patients. Then again, we’d have to get through all the bureaucracy to make that actually happen…

About a week after listening to this podcast, I got an email from my insurance company about different diabetes prevention programs I could sign up for. This was conditional on whether they determined, through an internet questionnaire, I was at risk of developing diabetes. I knew I would be, family history is totally clean and my labs are pretty sweet, but I’m a short, heavy woman (plenty of fat, but plenty of muscles too…even in my 20’s, wearing a size 6, I was in the “obese” BMI category lol) I was excited to see what kind of programs they would have available! Maybe something like low-carb or keto and I could report back on how awesome they were. There were 6 or 8 programs to choose from. Every single one had you weighing in, calorie deficits, whole grains-based nutrition…at least they were giving out free fitbits to get people moving. Sigh. I was rather sad since I had optimistically expected Virta was to be the rule and not the exception in diabetes prevention going forth. At least we have them to model and lead the way of how we can start solving this health care problem.
