Hey folks!
I’ve had a lot of people ask ask for a concise breakdown on what the similarities and differences might be between the Paleo and Keto eating approaches. Not sure if this fits the bill of “concise” but here is a video Nicki and I shot to try to address this topic. Let me know if this helps clarify any confusion you may have had and please do share any question you still have. The only way I can help y’all is to know where you might be stuck. At the end of the video we mention a new project I’ve been working on, click here if you’d like to learn more about that.

i kinda go between keto/paleo & sometimes whole30 going with how my body is at weight n feeling wise. paleo & keto & w30 has eliminated joint pain, improve greatly sleep n mood & dropped blood prehypertension.
jan p says
where does w30 fit into this?
Robb Wolf says
W30 is effectively paleo with super tight lane lines.

Hey Robb,
Pretty off topic, but still. What are your thoughts on SAD light like this (https://www.amazon.com/Beurer-Daylight-Natural-Sunlight-Simulation/dp/B01HOBZ066/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1510676592&sr=8-5&keywords=Beurer) for increasing sleep quality?
Robb Wolf says
I think they can be super helpful.

Hi Robb,
Been cyclical ketogenic for six to eight months. Before that i was primal/paleo-ish for many years. I wonder if either antibiotics (had a round a year ago) dairy intolerance can contribute to my bad blood markers? CRP: 7 mg/L, Total cholesterol: 5.7 mmol/L, HDL: 0.99, LDL: 4.1 and Triglycerides: 1.31
What’s your take on that?
Robb Wolf says
Gut issues (which unfortunately can be a consequence of antibiotic use…as great as they are there can be downsides). Again, it’s tough to get super deep in this without LDL-P at a minimum. Keep me posted!

I tried keto for a short amount of time and was losing weight pretty easily, which was awesome. But my body felt super funky like heart racing or just feeling a shaky like I had been running for a long time. I didn’t eat really bad beforehand kept my carbs less than 100g and went to a little below 50g to ease into keto. And the previous carbs I ate weren’t terrible, mainly fruit and brown rice. Do you know if that’s a normal response or if it’s something that I should personally avoid? Any thoughts on intermittent fasting while sticking to a paleo or keto diet? Thanks!
Marissa says
Hi Nat. The same thing happened to me. I’m no expert, but according to the resources I came across, electrolyte imbalance is fairly common when going keto, and could potentially explain the symptoms you described.

I have been paleo/primal for many years now and have gradually transitioned to what I refer to as “borderline keto.” It’s high fat, moderate protein and low carb. But I am way too lazy to track anything. In fact, every time I have tried to I’ve kind of made myself crazy. I just try to listen to my body. Weight is not an issue so I pay attention to energy, focus and things like that. If I want some carbs I have them, but it’s typically some sweet potato or white potato. Or a little more dark chocolate than usual.
Scott says
Hi Elizabeth,
I follow what seems to be a similar approach. Mostly keto high fat moderate protein low carb. I’m modestly active. I do 1 super high intense super slow (HIT) weight training (20 min) once a week. The rest is a few times per week just playing with my 10 year old. Running around. Going with him to indoor trampoline park.
Most every evening is either a little white rice or a sweet potato. When I don’t have that little bit of carbs I feel different in a way that is not good. Maybe once a week I’ll eat higher carb day (and minimize protein) with multiple sweet potatoes and white rice. But a high carb day is only like 150 g carbs or so. I don’t track. I used to track everything for a couple years and I’m definitely over that.

My 30 year old son has suffered for 18 months with awful post concussion symptoms and has tried everything recommended to no avail. He has subsequently gained a fair bit of weight. Would you recommend paleo or keto for this situation? His symptoms include headache, tinnitus, eye stigma, anxiety, sleep disruption, depression. Thank you

Keto would definitely be worth a try.

Hey Robb,
I was wondering if you could give us your thoughts on artificial sweeteners.
For context: I (like yourself) have been playing with using some nicotine gum and notice that on days where I use a bit more, my ketones drop the next morning. What is happening here? And are certain types of sweeteners better than others?
Thanks
