A year ago I had serious liver dysfunction, probably arising from a virus or a sensitive liver. I was referred to Gastroenterology as an outpatient, and although the liver enzymes reduced, things were not getting back to normal and my lipids and other tests where also abnormal. My Consultant thought I was at risk of metabolic syndrome as I had a family history of T2 diabetes.
4 months ago my Consultant thought that it could be linked to my weight. Although my BMI has always been normal, I had gained 5 kilos over the past decade and this was all sitting round my waist. She suggested that I should lose 5 kilos.
I have always eaten a classically healthy diet and had already cut out sugar but had found it impossible to lose weight. So I knew that to lose 5 kilos I would have to completely change my diet.
I started on the Paleo diet and I started to lose about half a pound a week. I have now achieved my target weight plus a bit more. All my tests are completely normal and I feel great. I need to maintain this weight for the rest of my life and I will stick to this lifestyle which I love.
The NHS in the UK admits that we have a crisis pending in the form of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease yet it is still providing the wrong dietary advice in the form of high carb/low fat diets fueled by the British Dietetic Association.
With the facts staring us in the face it seems crazy not to have a total rethink on what diet is best for the health of the nation.
So thank you Robb for the Paleo diet and all you are doing to promote it
As yet there seems little going on in the UK about it. I wonder what can be done to change this?
