Any thoughts about using full spectrum light bulbs to provide uvb and produce vitamin D? I found a study which seems to indicate that full spectrum fluorescent bulbs and mercury vapor bulbs increase vitamin D (in reptiles, but hopefully it would be the same for humans).
I’m guessing the bulbs would have to be used at midday to not interfere with the circadian rhythm.

It really depends on the bulb/lamp used, as they vary in amount of UV and intensity, but yes I would assume you could produce vitamin D from the right ones.
Yeah, you would probably want to use them in the day and not at night or before bed.

Robb alluded to a recent article in the Atlantic Monthly about gut permeability and rheumatoid arthritis. Intrigued, I looked at the article myself: http://tinyurl.com/l28mw6b. Robb’s comment implied (to me) that researchers had figured out how gut bacteria cause RA. The research, however, hasn’t reached that point: “But while many scientists are confident of the link between the microbiome and arthritis, they haven’t pinned down what particular role bacteria play in triggering the disease.”
I share Robb’s (and many others’) excitement about finding out exactly what the interplay between our microbiome and auto-immune diseases is, but we must not overreach the findings of good research, lest we be create a movement of pseudo-science and snake-oil cures.

Hi,
I love when I hear a good bit of science that helps explain points in my own health journey. Very long story short, I was a big traveler in my early days, got a bad dose of gastro bug in Eastern Turkey, (1998) when from the day before this happens from being able to get anything to progressively worse & worse (Turns out it was a parasite resulting in SIBO or from the podcast perhaps induced SIBO from a bad infection) so years later doctors would not help me, as I had put on weight. I tried to explain (I am a scientist) that I believe this to be a symptom but the only symptom taken seriously by doctors then, 2002, was weight loss, top gastroenterologist in Ireland told me there was nothing he could do for me. I just could not lose weight, young very active individual I was told to not eat meat & dairy & have a grain based diet. You can guess how that one worked out, sicker then ever I decided to do the exact opposite, found the book protein power, just totally turned my diet around, being a scientist I documented it, food weight loss stuck to the protocol to the letter, from a Sunday to the following Sunday my guts were normal for the first time in a long time, the most significant thing to others was that within that week, my brother is testament to this, I lost 21 pounds! From 144LBS to 124LBS (5′ 6″) I was so inflamed, the weight just fell off. I am assuming it was not Fat, as is it possible to lose that mass of fat in 7 days? over the next weeks I put about 5 pounds back on as I got better & stronger. So happy to hear that weight gain is now seriously being recognized as a symptom.

I really like the Dr. Ruscio episodes. He can get through a lot of dense information quickly and explain it really well.
Robb Wolf says
He is AWESOME! He has his own podcast now as well, do check that out.
