Day 13
Challenge: NO CAFFEINE!! Instead of taking a coffee break – take a break from coffee. You will live. I promise.
Two-Second Take Away: Bulletproof coffee is not a magic fat loss tool or the way to health. Butter, MCT oil or coconut oil + coffee isn’t going to lean you out especially if you’re downing three cups of it every morning…

Hi Amy, I have really enjoyed your writing. I love your direct, no nonsense, style. I’ve recently cleaned up my diet and started to do CrossFit Lite (mostly body weight… functional movements, etc.).
I’ve been at it for around 50 days and have lost around 20 pounds… I’ve gone from size 38 pants to 34s… and, most importantly, I feel amazing. Yesterday, I did 160 push-ups in 15 minute which is crazy considering I could only do around 25 a few months ago.
Anyhow, to my point, I have learned so much from this site but have also studied Dave Asprey’s work and can’t help but sense you don’t buy what he’s selling (figuratively and literally). I have been drinking around 20 ounces of BP coffee with C-8 MCT oil and grass fed butter since starting my cleaner eating plan. I also add some stevia drops… please don’t judge me BP fanatics!
Now, I haven’t peed on any keytone sticks but I do believe it’s working as he says. I have tons of energy and focus and I am not hungry, at all, until around lunch.
So, shoot straight, do you think I’m crazy for drinking this coffee? Aside from grass fed butter I don’t consume any other dairy… and I truly have adopted a mostly Paleo diet with the exception of some cheap wine once in awhile! Ha!
Sorry this is so long… but I truly value your opinion.

Ron,
Yeah, you’re likely in ketosis BUT you aren’t fasting if that’s what you’re going for. Also, I don’t love the BP coffee because you’re replacing food with nutrients with coffee and fat. Also, it’s not a magic way to lose weight and get lean. If it works for you – great, but I wouldn’t call it optimal by any stretch of the imagination. #bullshittery

Thanks for replying! And I can’t wait to one day use #bullshittery. Classic!
I’m not a BP apologist at all… trust me… I am learning as I go. But, according to things I am reading (beyond Asprey’s work) grass fed butter is actually loaded with butyrate, Vitamin A, K2, D, E and has lots of carotenes. So it seems to have more nutritional value than just “fat.”
Am I wrong?
Amy Kubal says
Slightly, but veggies and protein have a hell of a lot more!! 🙂
Ron Pereira says
Hmmm… now this will be fun research. I’d like to know how many veggies and how much protein you’d have to eat in order to get the same amount of butyrate, Vitamin A, D, E, K2 and carotenes as 1 TBSP of grass fed butter. Do you know? Are we talking some eggs and kale?
Amy Kubal says
Here’s how little is in butter – For 1 Tablespoon:
Vitamin A: 355 IU (7% of DRI)
Vitamin D: 0 (unless it is fortified)
Vitamin E: 0.33 mg
Vitamin K2: 1 microgram
Butyrate: Butter is about 3-4% butyrate a good source, but it is also found in all whole plant foods (vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc.)
Carotenes: These are Vitamin A precursors – see vitamin A
Yeah, it’s not a nutrient powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination. Enjoy some on your veggies.
