Boston has some pretty damn good food. Not too surprising I guess considering the size and complexity of the town but I was impressed. When I staggered off the plane and hit the hotel I was starving. I had the breakfast at Max’s The Greek in the San Francisco Airport at like 6am and it was now 5pm eastern…I was starv’n! I went down to Boylston st. and found a good looking Restaurant (the restaurant looked good, the waitresses looked equally yummy). I opened things up with a chicken satay. they were literally, the BEST I have ever had. I don’t do a lot of peanuts but the peanut sauce was fantastic. I just dug through my receipts to get the name of the place “Bangkok Blue” at 651 Boylston st. I finished things off with a mild green curry with beef. It was also quite good and most importantly, I would not need to eat my own arm. Here is what that grub looked like:
The next day I was able to hang out at CrossFit Boston and get a work out in. We headed down town and hit a Boston land mark: Union Oyster House. I started things off with a plate of local oysters and finished off with grilled shrimp on a ceasar salad (no croutons). The whole thing was REALLY good. Great atmosphere and people watching.
Saturday night we went out to the Long Horn on Park Av. I went for the 18oz Porter house with asparagus. I try to remember to tell the waitress I’m allergic to wheat and to ask the chef to use a dry steak if their usual marinades have soy sauce or something like that. I had asparagus and jalapeno cole-slaw for my sides. Meals like this make me happy to say “Fuck The Zone”. Here is what it looked like:
Sunday night we hit Eastern Standard. Apparently the appetizer we went for has been featured on the Food Network. On the menu it was listed among the other appetizers and went by the un-assuming name “Bone Marrow”. How the frack could I pass this up!? All 8 of us at the table opted for this and it sent the kitchen into a fizz…it took about two hours to get the appetizers and entrees (mine was 1/2 chicken over asparagus…pretty good). The bone marrow was some kind of baked beef shank and it was AMAZING! The marrow is like butter. They baked it with a little lemon zest, herbs and sea salt. We all wanted seconds, but we cleaned them out on the first go-around. Here is what the marrow and chicken dishes looked like and a photo of Steve Rast of CF Boston going to town on the tough-to-reach morsels.
I had a great time in Boston and really look forward to coming back. Each location I hit has plusses and minuses with regards to food options but I find it pretty easy to get something that supports a focus on food quality.

All of that looks incredibly tasty. I might fly to Boston just to try some of that.

Robb-
Found your website through Melissa Byers’ blog and I want to say “thank you!” as I am learning so much. I am really thinking of going paleo but I’ve got a few mental blocks to overcome before I make the leap. One question: what the heck can I put in my coffee? I looooove coffee but not black/plain. Right now I use either a Splenda or some evaporated cane juice sweetener. I know both of these are out on paleo, so what alternatives do I have? This is about the last holdout for me, so if I can make peace with this I think I’m ready to dive in and eat like a caveman! 🙂 Thanks!

A little splenda is not the end of the world. I DO like a little heavy cream (whole whipping cream is another name) in my coffee. If you are generally eating meat, veggies, fruit…good fats and have a little splenda in the coffee…not a big deal. Thank you for the kind words BTW!

Careful….HQ will accuse you of apostasy. 🙂

Cynthia-
I do not think I’m a popular figure at HQ most days. Well, most that end in “y”.

Fantastic. I am finding that it is so EASY to eat paleo. I don’t miss anything. Even after 50 years of cockblocking diets the body still has some resilience 🙂 I lived in Boston in 1973-74 and the food was great then; glad to see that it still is!

Thanks for the pointers. I’m flying to Boston in November. I’ll be sure to check some of these joints out, especially the one that serves bone marrow! Yum!

Not to beat a dead horse( although that could be tasty?) The coffee is my daily kryptonite too. I have 2-4 cups daily with about 2Tbsp of flavored coffeemate in each. Would the whole cream/splenda be the lesser of two evils here?
The International Delight I have on my desk right now shows f=2g, c=6g(all sugar), p=0 per Tbsp
Thanks Rob for all you and Nicki do for the Cf community!

Hmmm…not really sure on the swap out cream/splenda for coffee-mate! How’bout just the whole cream?!

Steve Rast at the top of the food-chain indeed! Robb, if my gluten-saturated behind doesn’t make it out to sunny Chico sooner, I look forward to recharging with a Nor-Cal Margarita down in Aromas. Thanks.
Best,
JH

they DO kick some serious ass!

Dskelly – another thing that is delicious and Robb mentions is just a bit of cinnamon with your coffee. I used to add WAY too much splenda / sweetener, but the cinnamon really helps stave off that sweet craving. Might want to give it a try…

I must interject here on your caption for your steak + asparagus picture.
That is not a porterhouse steak, but rather a bone-in ribeye. A porterhouse is very similar to a T-bone, the only difference being the size of the filet, which is larger on the porterhouse. That being said…
Bone marrow is such an awesome thing to eat, its insanely cheap to buy from the grocery store ( like $2.50 for twice the bones pictured) and is incredibly easy to make. Add the gremolata for a garnish and you are set to make this at home for very little.

My head is spinning with meat-clarified goodness!!
