I know there are a few affiliate owners and trainers who read this blog so I wanted to let y’all know about a pretty lengthy post I did for our CrossFit NorCal Blog. Our clients ask many, many nutrition related questions and it’s always an uphill battle to make the counter case to the Foor Pyramid Scam. Pass this info along if you think it might be helpful to your clinets.

Simply another awesome post. You don’t post much, but when you do it is usually a great read.
I also should say that “I feel your pain.” I work in the trenches of health care and to talk against whole grains is a health risk in itself. People can get very upset. I have to be careful not to get myself in trouble. I was even questioned once by another provider when I told a group of patients to stop eating anything that comes in a box. It’s too bad because going paleo has had a great impact upon my life.
Brad-
Yep…I wish I posted more too! I have a couple hundred topic ideas written down…no time to follow up on many.
Good on ya for fighting the good fight…I’d say I have it easier as a gym owner…the folks who come through the door have (for the most part) made a decision to do SOMETHING new. Makes our jobs a bit easier.

Thanks for that post Robb. I passed it along to a few folks who i am moderating for the Paleo Challenge here at CF Portland. Hopefully they will find it helpful.

Thanks, partially posted on my blog with a link to yours.

Robb,
Is there a simple reference or page that will show me an exhaustive list of foods that are Paleo accepted?
Roop-
check out the Paleodiet site…I think there is one in the FAQ/resource section.

Hey Robb,
I was just going through the CF Radio site and listened to the one in which you take part. You said you had a big cup of coffee, or something like that, and that caffeine has good anti-inflammatory properties, among other things. I had always heard that caffeine was something too be excluding from diet along with dairy, gluten, etc. So here’s the question: Caffeine…good or bad? How much is too much? If you drink a coffee or a chi or something with caffeine in it, should it be counted towards Zone blocks.
And another question I have(sorry for all the questions)…
I was reading a post on the PM forum today, and someone posted a quote from Greg Everett, “for a weightlifter the Zone sucks. I would never ever let a lifter use the Zone”
Do you recommend the Zone, even if you are involved in Oly lifting, or powerlifting type stuff(deadlifts, squats)? If not, what would you suggest?
I’m really interested in getting my nutrition as dialed in as possible, so thanks in advance, and thanks for the awesome blog.
Hunter!
Yep, caffeine, good. How much? Totally depends on the individual, obviously it CAN be overdone.
Zone for OLing? Well…it’s too many carbs, and likely not enough cals overall. I’d much prefer a cyclic low carb diet. Easier to maintain body comp and I think more appropriate for a power athlete. If mass gain is the primary concern, all bets are off…one just needs to eat a boat-load!

Robb,
Love the post. Am organising to link to it from our site at CrossFit Victoria.

Robb,
I have started drinking a chi latte every morning because my mom usually drinks them and I got her to make me one too. I have been feeling great, and have become more regular in…ummm…my visits to the restroom. Apparently caffeine has some laxative properties as well.
Also I have started eating sweet potatoes in my post wod meal, which are delicious by the way, but I’m not sure how much of a sweet potato is a block of carbs. I read on some random website that 1/5 of a cup is a block. Is this right? If not how much is a block?
Thanks for all the help
Hey Amigo!
Check out this post:

Just look up yams…I think 133g of cooked yam/SP=3 blocks.

Robb,
Great post.
I’ve been “back-and-forthing” with “fit201” on that blog. Could you address his statment regarding fat lining the cells and preventing reception of insulin, hence leading to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes? This just seems counter to all I’ve been reading (or have i been only reading sources from one side of the story? Taubes, Eads, Sears, Cordain). Nearly every study fit201 sites in his post is addressed by Taubes under the relatively utter futility of dietary epidemiology. Maybe it’s relative quanitites here and types of carbs, but his (fit201’s) “science” seems wrong. If “fat causes diabetes” as he boldly claims, than i’m fucked because I’ve cut my carb blocks in half, shifted them to PWO meal and am now on athletic zone x 3 plus fat for missed carbs (comes to appx 70-80 blocks of fat per day). I need reassurance that i’m pointing my clients, family and myself in the right direction.
I now understand why you won’t work with Vegetarians.
Thanks,
Jeremy
Jeremy-
I looked for the blog…did not find it….can help a brother out with a link? This argument is the Old Tired fat is evil crap. Saturated fat DOES reduce membrane fluidity to some degree and CAN decrease insulin sensitivity as a consequence. This is part of why the paleo diet recommends ample polly and mono-unsat’d fat. This is one piece. The second piece is that we CAN NOT induce type 2 diabetes with a high fat diet…we induce ketosis at a certian point, which is the antithesis to type 2 diabetes. We can induce type 2 diabetes in fairly short order with refined carbs, particularly if the fructose content is sufficiently high.
Some people just refuse to embrace the obvious.

Thanks Robb, my discussion with fit201 occurred on your CrossFit Norcal blog post (http://www.norcalsc.com/index.php/post/norcal_nutrition_are_we_crazy/) in the comments section. His first comment was on Nov 10th. My mono fat rich ass is reassured and thanks you for your input. Will you be out for the Charlotte Lvl I and II certs in Dec?
Ah! Rats in the house and I did not even know it!
No, I’m hammered with the nutrition certs…I miss the Level 1’s!
Jeremy says
Robb, dude. I appreciate the reply post on the Norcal blog, but I was on your side of this nutrition battle! I’d appreciate it if you could address it to fit201, not to me, Jeremy. I’m the good guy! Thanks!
J
ARGH!!!! I’m an idiot…sorry man…I’ll try to fix that! Case of friendly fire?!
