The Road Forager!

This is an experiment using my iPhone to update the blog so we’ll see how or if this works! What I’m hoping to do is post some of the meals we put together while on the road for the CrossFit Nutrition certs. We have eaten in some wacky places and it might be interesting for some folks to know how we navigate gluten free (ideally)paleo/zone meals in greasy spoons, Thai restaurants and roadside taco trucks. This first photo is of a 6oz steak, two eggs over medium and some remarkably tasty fruit from Starvin Arvins in Montrose, CO. This place is your typical diner but you can still throw together a legit meal without too much hassle. Nicki ordered similarly with an omlette and fruit.

    I think we have been to the same road side taco truck. But i dont remember eating.

    Starvin Arvins rocks! Not sure why but fruit is particularly good in that part of the world. We had a friend with an orchard near Grand Junction and the the peaches spoiled me for life, they were that good. Also had some carrots that were like eating candy. Never knew that’s what they were supposed to taste like. Hope you guys have fun, the western slope is beautiful. If you get a chance take a quick drive to Ouray and go to the hot springs. Hope to see you guys in March.

    I think you have a decent idea for a running theme here. When traveling and eating out I really struggle with the combination of cheap and healthy.

    I get tired of eggs and yesterdays fruit. Any creative inspiration is appreciated.

    That’s the plan. I set up a twitter account which I’m going to tinker with…I’m hoping to pump book updates and On-the-road meals through either twitter or this new iphone app for wordpress. It was easier to do this psot from my phone than from my PC…amazing. Nicki and i end up scrounging meals in some very odd places. Managed to get a wicked bout of food poisoning from the Phoenix Airport…try to avoid that place at all costs.

    good post, i used to travel a lot for work and we’d be in small towns stuck at some casino with very little healthy options, during that year i gained about 20 pounds. now i’m on paleo/zone getting fit and healthy and i’ve been afraid to travel again cause of this, its good to see that you can get some good nutrition on the road. the hardest thing was finding good fruit and veggies, meat was never a problem but the produce was always very pathetic looking and quite bad

    HA! I ate there almost every night when i went hunting a few years back in Montrose. I almost went out with one of the waitresses. We just ate steak i think….too bad i didnt know about this kind of eating back then…..probably would have skipped out on the morning fruit loops……f**kin jackass toucan.. S.O.B. tried to kill me.

    Toucan Sam is a wiley and formidable adversary!

    Definitely a better meal than the TGIF’s road meal from the CF Journal last week. I find myself going for the same sort of meals on the road. Steak, eggs, chicken are safe easy to find proteins along with fruit, broccoli, and other greens. I always carry a pound of trader joe’s raw almonds when I travel so I have a stable fat supply.

    Yep, and it’s easy to make it gluten free/paleo. Better food quality means better performance and recovery.

    Love the website overhaul, and it’s great to hear your book is rollin’ along. Speaking of road foraging, any idea if you’re going to make it up to Calgary in the enar future? I know you had alluded to coming up this way “when it’s warmer”, and I don’t blame you for waiting. I thought a nutrition cert might be piggybacked onto the March Level 1 cert, but no dice.

    MMMM. That was a good taco truck. . . or maybe it was just the timing. At least hunting it down spoke to my hunter/gatherer instincts.

    Robb should you be worried about “fed lot raised” protein sources on the road and eggs

    Well…it’s not ideal but I just supplement with fish oil and I think things finish out fine.

    Robb should you always run NO FAT in the POST WOD MEAL ??? even if its breakfast or on the road yep! Minimize fat pwo

    Rob,

    Can you comment on block sizes? Specifically if we should stick to the 5 blocks per meal 3 times daily. Maybe break it down by body size and objective (lean out, maintain, or pack on mass)
