Hey folks!
I was contacted by Prof. Staffan Lindeberg to see if I could help with travel funding for his grad student, Maelan Fontes Villalba. Maelan is doing some amazing research as part of his PhD. and it’s critical that we help this next generation of researchers get their findings out to the masses. I contacted the good folks at the AHS and they agreed to offer their PayPal account (bottom left of the page) as a payment method for folks to donates for this effort. With current exchange rates we are looking at $1558.76 to bring Maelan, his wife and newborn from Spain to Boston. I’m in for $200, if you can afford to help out here I think we can easily crowd source this problem and make sure Maelan can present at the next AHS. When you make a donation please make a note that this s for “Maelan’s Travel.”
2012 Paleo Community Survey
David Csonka at Naturally Engineered has put out the 2012 edition of the Paleo Community Survey. 2011 revealed some interesting numbers, please take a moment to fill this out so we can learn more about the demography of the Ancestral health Movement.
LEAP!
The folks from LEAP have a pretty cool app in which you can compete with folks doing Paleo Challenges. Here is what they shot me:
We’re a three-person company building a tech startup for the past year. Our first product was a corporate wellness website that was meant to get employees more involved in a healthy lifestyle. While we were waist deep in launching that product, we decided it was time to get healthy ourselves.
All three of us have always been health conscious, but we had never totally jumped in and tried a strict 30-Day Paleo challenge. We went for no caffeine, no alcohol, no grains, no processed foods, and no dairy. The first week was REALLY tough. We felt foggy the first couple days and pretty lethargic, so we started tossing around ideas on how to make sure no one cheated and ways to turn our challenge into something a little more fun.
We started by texting pictures of our meals to each other and assigning a point to each paleo meal that we ate. Then lightning struck…wouldn’t it be awesome if we had an app where we could snap pictures of our paleo meals and compete with each other by earning points? This idea evolved into Leap – the first mobile app that lets you create challenges with your friends and compete by snapping pictures.
Here’s a short guide on how to use Leap for a paleo challenge with your friends:
After our challenge our team was more productive and felt better than ever. We hope the paleo community loves our app and that it helps you discover the fun in a 30 day challenge too.
You can download the app from our homepage or, get it right from the app store in iTunes.

OK I’m all for helping Maelan Fontes Villalba experience a Robb Wolf Bump I’ve donated $50
All the best to you and your wife hope all goes well with the delivery and breastfeeding and new parenting in general. It’s a wild ride.
Thanks for all the knowledge you share through podcasting and tweeting and blog — it has helped me immensely — I just wish I could convince all the unwell, hurting people around me to get on board

Dear Cathy, thanks so much for your help. I’ll do my best, together with Dr. Lindeberg, to bring fresh, scientific and practical new ideas to #AHS12. We are working hard.
Regarding my child (actually she is 22 months old), she has been grown as a modern hunter-gatherer, way back from the womb. My wife has been Paleo for the last 6-7 years and my daughter eats 98% paleo foods. Her health is very good with no allergies, asthma, colics, or related inflammatory diseases which are common among children nowadays.
Best wishes,
Maelán

Not to be a jerk, but why are we sending his wife and kid with him?
Robb Wolf says
BC it sucks to be on the road WO your family (I can attest to this), and they will be here for several weeks. So, opt in if it seems a worthy cause, pass if not, THX!

I gather that there is no Leap app for Andriod. I understand that the photo shows iPhones only but I was hoping the Leap team meant for this to be inclusive. Some of us Paleo folks use devices other than Apple.
Sean from ATL says
Continued research is important. This is a great effort. While I’m sure these guys are connected in email chains, you gain something important with a face-to-face exchange. If Paleo or Robb have helped you, I hope you’ll consider a small donation. The AHS presentation is one element. It’s also getting these researchers together for a confluence of ideas. Help the folks investigating this stuff expand what we know. I’m in.
Maelán says
Dear Sean,
Thanks so much for your support. I completely agree with you, face-to-face exchange is much more productive for science and general public. We expend a lot of time and energy reading and email exchanging but not always the word is spread out there, that’s why #AHS12 is so important,
Best wishes,
Maelán
