Is it possible to share the link the the article Dr. R spoke about regarding recent findings in a popular diagnostic testing lab?
Robb Wolf says
I’ll ping the doc and see.
Michael Ruscio says
Here ya go 🙂 http://www.ichnfm.org/publications/content/IJHNFM_v2q1_microbiology.pdf

I might be blind, but I can’t find the show notes/transcripts. If I’m not blind, is it possible to get them?
Squatchy says
You’ll notice a link that says “Download a transcript of this episode here” below the download episode link, usually sometime between a few days to a week after the episode is released. Once the episode is complete and uploaded I send it to the transcription service, and it usually takes them a little while to send the transcript back.

Very cool to hear Dr. Ruscio mention Jeff Moss. Dr. Moss was one of my professors in grad school! He was talking about the potential dangers of oversupplementation with calcium and folic acid years before I heard it from anyone else. He was up on the latest research and ahead of the curve on more than one important issue that has since come to light in nutrition science.
Sean L Miran says
I’m fairly certain from a couple of quick google searches that the articles on using N-Acetylcysteine as an anti-biofilm agent are all as topical preparations, not orally administered.
Michael Ruscio says
Sean, that is not correct. There have been clinical trials using it orally.
Michael Ruscio says
I am very careful to only state what is fact, if it is speculation I always make that known. Like I said in the interview, it has been uses in clinical trials http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23478248
Sean L Miran says
I was not clear enough with my statement- The uses all appear to be through topical application-either orally to affect Pathogens in the GI tract or as topical preparations in vitro, or as an inhaled preparation for use on the respiratory mucosa( and that was a a mucolytic, not as an anti-biofilm agent). I wished to clarify those uses as distinct from NAC being absorbed through the GI tract in into the bloddsteream, and subsequently delivered to the affected tissues through the circulation.

Thanks for a great discussion, gents. I’d love to get my hands on your source material regarding microvilli thickness being influenced by the presence of pathogens during development. Grazzi!
Michael Ruscio says
Keep an eye on the newsletter, I’ll push that out soon!
Dave Mayo says
This was a great episode, listened to it twice and went back to the older one and listened to that twice. Love it when Functional Medicine Docs are on the podcast.

In your research/experience how does Biocidin act on biofilms?
Michael Ruscio says
Looks like a decent anti-microbial, but not many heavy hitters for biofilms. I dont use it in the clinic so I can’t comment first hand.
Emily Hurley says
I have been using Biocidin and it’s fantastic. One of the only things that’s worked for me on gut pathogens. If you do some googling in it you will see that it has been studied to target biofilms. I can’t say enough good things about Biocidin. I have tried so many things.

I was happy to hear the iodine conversation since there is so much conflicting information out there. Surprised though, that selenium was not mentioned. From what I understand, iodine in the presence of selenium protects against autoimmunity. While the high dose iodine folks recommend this, many practitioners who recommend much more moderate doses of iodine will not do so with out also prescribing selenium. I think you may have minimized the benefits of iodine and failed to touch on how it is safely used by many practitioners who aren’t mega-dose proponents. Dr. Amy Myers, who lost her thyroid to Graves’ disease, is one reputable proponent of iodine/selenium for thyroid health.
