This podcast is guaranteed to sell at least one copy of The Blood Code. It is now on my Kindle. Perfect timing for my current state of health and wealth (average and poor).
Here in Arizona, there is a new lab called Theranos which provides testing for cheap, and with less blood. http://www.theranos.com/
The tests in The Blood Code are roughly one-third the cost of what one would pay saveonlabs.com.
It appears that they provide testing in PA and CA, at this time, but, I have only looked at the detail as it applies to AZ.
Dr. Rich Maurer says
Yes John. I have been watching Theranos for years—inexpensive and accessible—this is a wildly empowering change for the all of us who use blood tests to navigate health and longevity. I do hope there is not too much smoke and mirrors in their reliability following microtainer blood sample dilution. FDA has been slow to approve their tests and so much is behind secretive corporate doors. I can’t gauge their reference ranges and accuracy yet. I’ll keep everyone posted – I have no $ interest in any lab, so am advocating for us the users. Best, RM

So while listening to the show, I heard Dr. Maurer say that if you are hot you will decrease the production of T3 and increased rT3 – thus creating a hypothyroid situation. However, he also says that if you are hypothyroid you should take your T4 in the AM, then do 5-6min of exercise. It seemed a bit contradictory – any thoughts?
Dr. Rich Maurer says
Hi Martha,
Sorry for the delayed reply, great question! In controlled settings – like a warm pool and athletes swimming “hard” – it takes about 20 minutes to generate the drop in T3 and paired increase in reverse-T3. Prior to this 20-25-minute time-frame, thyroid conversion and activity actually improves. This is separate of the thyroid gland realize. The DIO enzymes that regulate cellular thyroid metabolism act once the metabolic “heat” is threatening to the body. If you sneak up and do <10 minutes there is no thyroid deactivation – to the contrary, the increase metabolic effect and circulation T3 increases. In my practice, the clinical improvement in hypothyroid folks is dramatic with this pretty simple addition. -Best, RM

Thank you for clarifying – quite interesting.

Can there be negative effects from the tr:hdl equation being too low. Mine is around .38. I follow a low carb diet, could there be a need for carbs?
Thanks
