Hey everyone!
I wanted to let you know that my good friend (and coach) Ido Portal will be at NorCal Strength & Conditioning April 30-May 1 (Please note the Date change from the original post). Here is a description of the seminar:
Join expert strength coach Ido Portal for this 2 day workshop. Ido will be covering a variety of topics including:Straight arm strength development (Press handstand work, Staddler Press HS, Planche, F-lever, HLR, L-Sit variations, Casse-Noix Set, etc,etc )Bent arm strength development (muscle ups, ring routines, one arm chin progression, HSPU, Planche push ups, etc.)Lower body work and explosiveness- activation work, basic tumbling, explosive jumping, correcting imbalances, knee prep protocol, etc.Organic Movement and energy system work – rope climbs, various handstand and back bridge walks, low gate variations, various crawl patterns and how all of these elements are used in metcons / energy system developmentProgressive Loaded Stretching, mobility development, joint prep and prehab/rehab protocols Equilibre and handbalancing – the theory of balance, basic preparations for handbalancing, body line drills, rebalancing drills, freestanding handstand practice, wrist prep for injury prevention, elbow lever, QDR and Airbaby static positions, developing support capacity, shoulder opening routines. Cost is $525
So…who is this Ido guy anyway?
I first “met” Ido via an email exchange in early 2004 in which Ido described an eerily parallel path of development through Capoeira, boxing, strength training and paleo nutrition. I could literally publish a book on some of the epic email threads Ido and I have generated over the years. Ido is an iconoclast…a complete perfectionist at what he does and this is augmented by a shocking degree of physical ability and technical understanding of all things training, nutrition, pre-hab and re-hab.
Most of my training for the past 6 months has been a direct outgrowth of Ido’s last visit and it’s been the most fun I’ve had in years. I’m working my way through a 3 day cycle that involves “bent arm” work including 1 arm chin progressions, rope climbs, QDR progressions and other fun.
QDR
This is followed by a “lower body” day which is made up of various plyo exercises, OL derivatives, and some classic strength work with squats, pulls etc. I achieved my first standing back flip at age 28 but have let the skill rust, so this is all preparatory work for doing that (and some other fun stuff) again.
The third day is a “straight arm” day that involves planche, lever and other progressions.
So, pretty advanced stuff, yes? Well, you can benefit from Ido’s coaching and progressions regardless of current fitness or skill set. His coaching encompasses the full range of pre-hab, skill progression and most importantly, he helps you to customize this technology for YOUR goals. I mainly want to do BJJ, get some decent acrobatic skills again, and learn how to Lindy-Hop and Salsa with my wife. This training supports all that, and is just damn fun.
So, if you take your training and coaching seriously, if you want to really expand your knowledge and skill-set, come hang out with us at NorCal while Ido is in town.

Jake B says
I’d love to take that class, the body control he displays is awesome. That is the kind athlete I’d like to try and be. Not sure I can make it down to Chico.
Any chance Ido will be teaching a class in the Seattle/Portland area?
Thanks,
Jake
Robb Wolf says
Almost a certainty there will be classes at Scott Hagnas’ place in Portland. Wait for that.
Jake S says
Ido’s website says he’ll be in Portland August 23rd-30th at CrossFitPortland (Scott Hagnas’ place)
Zack says
I talked with Edo, He couldn’t get a visa for the US, but is planing on coming to CrossFit Seattle ASAP.
Anton Emery says
Those sound alot like my goals Robb. Stay strong and conditioned for BJJ, and learn some new bodyweight strength skills.
I would highly recommend Ido’s workshops, particularly if you have an interest in bodyweight skills and are wondering how to program it all.
Jake, I train at Crossfit Portland and I think Ido will be coming through in May. Keep an eye on http://www.crossfitportland.com
Ido Portal says
Jake, there will be classes in Crossfit Seattle at the weekend of May 14th.
See you there!
Bea Binag says
Awesome! I will be there for sure. I love your Floreio progressions! Regardless I’m at the most beginner, I still enjoy watching them and learning from them.
Josh says
Does he have any kind of training material, workouts, books, dvd’s, or videos for those of us who live on the wrong coast for all the action? I checked his blog, but couldn’t really find much there.
Robb Wolf says
He has over 100 videos on youtube, more stuff in the mix, he travels EVERYWHERE, but the NorCal event will be the best on ;0)
Ido Portal says
Josh, there will be a seminar in Chicago at Crossfit 312 – check out their website for registration.
Jason B says
Is there any chance of a future web/print based version? As much as I’d like to come, the whole cross-country expedition thing is a deterrent.
Robb Wolf says
Some projects in the mix, and Ido travels everywhere, but nothing beats hands on coaching.
Cole Dano says
Ido was just at our studio in Helsinki, Finland.
It was an absolutely fantastic experience. Ido is not only a gifted performer, but teacher as well. The man really knows his stuff.
Highly recommended!
(BTW Robb, when are you coming to visit us?)
Robb Wolf says
This year hopefully!!
Cole Dano says
If you aren’t already negotiating with someone about Helsinki, let me know and we will very happily arrange it!
Robb Wolf says
Is that for me or Ido?
Greg says
Been following ido for awhile now. Have not begun any of his training yet because it seems overwhelming, the programming and where to start etc. A workshop would be awesome, to bad I’m on the east coast!
Greg says
Also id like to add to what jason said. Something written up on learning the skills and programming for different goals etc would be great.(how to schedule straight arm vs bent arm vs when to Include the bb movements) You can find endless amount of information on barbell training but almost nothing on bodyweight training. And the info that does happen to be out there doesn’t cover it all! Looking forward to whatever you guys have in store!
Ido Portal says
Greg, my new website is in the works filled with information about gymnastics/bodyweight s&c and especially the programming and manipulation of training variables as well as basic preparatory work that limits most people from even starting out with this stuff.
If you are serious about learning – come to Chicago for my seminar at Crossfit 312 – check out their website for registration.
Steve Cork says
Awesome!
I can’t wait to see Ido for workshop next weekend in Brighton, UK.
Thanks Robb for mentioning Ido a few years back and ever since. He’s long been on my ‘radar’ and is now coming to my back yard!
Thea says
Ok. This may be a loaded question, but here goes.
What does one look for when choosing a gymnastics cert/course. There are several to choose from these days. Crossfit, gymnastics bodies, ido portal. Lots of info on the web too lately.
I want to learn for my own programing and for my clients and lifters. Any input would be great.
Thanks
Thea
Robb Wolf says
Thea-
I know all of these folks personally, they are all outstanding. I’d grab the one closest to you, tinker with it and then see about adding another.
Bottom line, you can’t go wring with any of them.
Squatchy says
I need to get smart and move to California. I would love to take one of Ido’s seminars, and will if I get the opportunity. Been following a little of his stuff for a while, he does some pretty impressive work.
Tomas Lindahl says
Having found out about Ido’s knowledge about the “floreio” aspect of Capoeira and having tried some of his regiments myself in my own capoeira life I’m delighted that an old favoured icon and a new one is connected like this, being on my 18:th day of paleo diet and already feeling quite hyped about this change. Small world, but at the same time not.

Mustafa says
Ido (or anyone else who might know). Will you be doing any seminars in or around Miami this year?
Dan says
Bring Ido back!
