Hey everyone!
I hope y’all are well. I’m finally done with the batch of talks I had to give and I’m excited to get in and start writing for the blog, doing some Road Foragers and developing the Liberty Garden concept. Here is a little update on what’s been shaking:
Anthropology Forum Talk
The California State University Anthropology Department invited me to speak at their weekly Anthropology Forum a few weeks ago. It was an odd experience speaking in a lecture hall that I’d taken a number of chemistry and physics classes in but it was fun and seemed well received (we all went and had drinks afterwards). I’m hoping to do more talks like this for the Athropology Department in the future.
Unfortunately for the CSU Nutritional Science Department, I did not fall over and die during the talk.
Enloe Hospital Talk
About a week after the Anthropology talk I presented a lunch time talk for our main local hospital, Enloe Medical Center. I was actually a bit nervous about this talk as…well, many of the folks at the hospital think I’m Satan incarnate. T. Colin Campbell speaks at Enloe frequently (at the request of a retired 7th Day Adventists surgeon who is still influential in the hospital and community) so my wacky idea of “Evolutionary Medicine” is usually filed between blood letting, leeches and reading chicken entrails. I was initially invited to speak to a large group of heart patientss by the Cardio-thoracic Surgery department who did something wacky: They read my book, tried it with folks and really liked the results. Well, the dietetics department apparently had a fit at the idea of me being allowed to talk to these heart patients. So they had me removed from that talk, and I gave a talk to the medical staff instead. So far the feedback has been pretty positive. The folks who hated me before likely still hate me, but they now know I can articulate science as well as any of them. What has been good is that a number of fence sitters, who think Evolution + Medicine actually makes sense, they have become strong supporters. In that regard it was definitely a worthwhile effort.
Paleo Solution Seminar 2.0
The split with CrossFit saw one of the first major improvement in my talk in that I jettisoned the Zone curriculum I’d been lugging around since the beginning. Folks may not realize this but I wrote several articles, including 42 Ways to Skin the Zone, in an attempt to take something deeply flawed, deeply broken, and make it actually work. Sound nutrition, be it for the “elite” or those escaping the bondage of obesity, should not necessitate skills found amongst statisticians, analytical chemists and accountants. This revamp involved switching the whole 8 hr talk to a power point presentation that I think is a lot more professional and allows me to cover more material in the same time. I spend a ton of time describing the science behind autoimmunity, systemic inflammation, hypercorticism, overtraining, sleep and a few other goodies. I devote ample time to the practical applications (fat loss, muscle gain, athletic optimization), but the meat of the day is on the “why”. As far as “how” I’m still stumped that the Food Matrix is not enough for folks, but that’s just me being cranky.
This first talk was in Chico, the next PSS is in Toronto on March 26th. We will likely have one more event in the US in 2011, perhaps 1-2 internationally, and that’s it!
ABC NightLine!
Tough to compete with the Middle East coming un-stitched and HEY! Charlie Sheen has Tiger Blood, so the Nightline piece featuring Art Devany, CrossFit South Brooklyn and myself was almost a month later than planed and only about 6 minutes instead of the original 1 hr piece. Oh well. It was very favorably done and I’m grateful for that.
Eva La rue!
CSI Miami hottie and Paleo Eat’n superstar, Eva La Rue was in First For Women Magazine, check it out:
Podcast Update
Just need to let folks know that the Big Man, with the Big Beard, Andy Deas, will be moving on from the podcast. Andy was a huge help not only in getting the podcast rolling, but also in organizing my original outline for the book. Keep up with Andy and his Exploits at Chasing Capacity. Another large, Hairy guy y’all probably know, Greg Everett will help keep the shenanigans rolling on the podcast. Greg and I share the rare honor of being amongst the few to be “kicked out” of CrossFit. Just interesting to ponder. Anyway, tomorrow’s podcast will go up a little late. We tried an alternate recording method in an effort to improve sound quality. Folks asked, we are trying.
Ok, I think that’s it for now!
Matt Lentzner says
Wow. I’m going to miss Andy. You guys had such good chemistry.
Robb Wolf says
Yep, working with Andy was a kick in the pants for sure! I think you will like Greg also.
Brett says
I always loved the crossfit and training discussions in the podcast, what is fitness, who is fit, health/fitness/longevity, training for GPP/strength/mass etc, I think they’ll get even better with Greg on the podcast. Thanks to Andy and good luck with his blog.
Typo on the post, while I’m sure you got some ‘hypercriticism,’ I believe that should be hypercorticism? hyper insulinism?
Cheers.
Robb Wolf says
Thanks Brett, I was trying to fix that on my iphone and failed miserably. The Kraken texted me to fix that too. Paleo-spelling-fail.
Robert says
Man, Eva La Rue looks good, can you believe she is 45?
Anyway, good things happening.
Stan says
Andy is leaving?? Noooooooooooooooo! Greg better have a wholesome chuckle!
Shelly says
That’s what I was thinking! Andy’s laugh is one of my favorite parts of the show. Maybe he should get a side job doing some canned laughter for sitcoms or something.
Adam K says
My heart weeps for the loss of Andy Deas from the podcast (my B.I.C. – Brother In Coconut)… and yet, the appearance of Greg Everett sure sounds cool!
Robb Wolf says
It should be good. Or an epic disaster…but no middle ground between! Greg can be your BIN (brother in nachos).
Adam K says
Ohh, nachos. What tangled webs we weave… drool.
Jenn says
My thoughts exactly. Good luck to the new co-host. Andy you will be missed.
Russell says
Andy is moving on from the podcast? Is his beard maintenance taking up more and more of his time?
Robb Wolf says
HA!! Andy I nothing if not efficient, he can manage beard maintenance and new projects with equal Verve.
Jules says
Wow, I didn’t realize it was supposed to be an hour on Nightline; wish I could see the rest of the footage. I made sure my mom watched- I’m trying to convert her, and she really liked the segment, other than “the girls lifting those huge weights;” I guess she was worried for them!
Robb Wolf says
Ha! Yea, because we could never start her with itty-bitty weights! The longer segment had me demonstrating a scaled WO for the sedentary. Unfortunately, Charlie Sheen’s sheenanigans took center stage.
musajen says
Who can I bribe to get a video of the scaled WO for the sedentary?
Robb Wolf says
They are not willing to release it, at least not now. It IS ABC, we’d need some deeep pockets.
Jim Sutton says
Robb, your presentation at CSU was awesome.
I sent an email with a link to it to everyone in my address book (about 7 people), imploring them to take 45 minutes to find out how they can likely avoid developing most of the diseases that kill folks nowadays. I hope they do so.
Robb Wolf says
Thanks Jim! Very kind.
Mrs. F says
The Paloe Solution’s six listeners will miss you Andy Deas!
Morgan says
Andy, you’ll be missed! If you ever do a “Chasing Capacity” podcast, I’ll be the first to subscribe!
Cheers,
-Morgan

Hey Robb– You link to the Food Matrix returns a ‘file not found’ http://robbwolf.com/2011/03/07/updates/robbwolf.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/…/thePaleoSolution_FoodMatrix.pdf — is this the link you are thinking of:
http://robbwolf.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/thePaleoSolution_FoodMatrix.pdf
Robb Wolf says
Thanks Miles, will fix that.
Jake says
Ok…am I on crack and missed this link somewhere else on Robbwolf.com??

It is very possible that it is posted somewhere other than the blog area since I have not gotten a chance to delve into the depths of the new site. I got addicted to the old ways of just the blog and a few other pages of the “Pre-Cartoon Robb and Gato” website. The new site is an awesome upgrade though.
Bryan L says
Wow, you stuffed a lot in this update. Too bad the Nightline piece got cut down. It was good, though. I had been expecting something poking fun at us, but it was very positive.
I’m really sorry to hear Andy is leaving, but I’m also excited to hear about Greg Everett joining you. I have his weightlifting DVD, and he’s a good presenter. It’ll be good, as long as Aimee and Nicki are standing by with shock collars for you guys, to help keep the snark and sarcasm at acceptable levels. (BBS. Not now, Sweetie.)
Robb Wolf says
Ha! Greg and I do have a tendency to get in trouble.
Renae says
Hmmm, I am very sad that Andy is leaving and somewhat skeptical of this Greg Everett fellow. But since this whole gig is a wealth of knowledge brought to me FREE, I’ll take what I can eat to counter the daily comments that I need to eat my whole grains, and dairy because I need the calcium. Luckily it is starting to get warm enough in Virginia that I can pop open the hatchback and eat my lunch outside away from the critics, and with a little side dish of sunshine/fresh air.
Robb Wolf says
You MIGHT, possibly warm up to Greg Everett. Maybe.
Corey says
Is Andy finally fulfulling his dream of becoming a beard model on the “Just for men” commercials? 😉
Brandon says
Andy you will be missed dude. Bring on G.E. .
Brandon says
And bring back the Kracken too. And Chris K
Squatchy says
I’m sad to hear Andy is leaving, you will be missed good sir. Sasquatches for life! 🙂
It sounds like Greg will be a good addition to the show though.
Improved sound quality?!? Sir, that is blasphemy, haha.
Nick Cruz says
Andy will for sure be missed. You guys had great on air chemistry. I am looking forward to hearing the new podcast format though with Greg Everett. I have learned so much from you guys and from your guests. My speakers drip with knowledge and I collect it like a beekeeper collects honey. I know at least 10 people who are eating paleo due to the knowledge that I have learned here and in the book!
Nick
PS, what ever happened to the contraband t-shirts you were going to shoot my way? I was looking forward to wearing them to my local CF affiliate. You know, keep the fire stoked and all. 😉
Robb Wolf says
Nick-
We decided to just keep all the CrossFit NorCal t-shirts in storage. Just in case some kind of “Ruby Ridge” event goes down. Could really make T-s from the 4th affiliate a collectors item ;0)
Julie says
“Sound nutrition, be it for the “elite” or those escaping the bondage of obesity, should not necessitate skills found amongst statisticians, analytical chemists and accountants.”
This sentence is so full of win I needed to put on my sunglasses and read it a few more times to soak it all in. It sums up perfectly my disdain for all things Zone.
PaulL says
Ahhh! You forgot the Spoiler Alert! I started listening to ever podcast from #1 and I’m just up to #68 today. Now you’ve *really* jumped the shark, replacing the main character with an unknown look-alike. What are we to do? Next you’ll tell me all this pseudo-science was just a hoax, I didn’t really lose any weight, my lipid numbers are all still sky-high, and that Evander really can have more than 5 fries…
Sigh…
I can only hope that having 2 ex-communicated CFers on the show makes me chuckle more on my daily commute 🙂
Andy, I’ll miss you. Greg, welcome aboard our community pseudo-science experiment…
(Just out of curiosity, did the Kracken take Lalonde back into captivity? I would think he’d also be a natural psuedo-replacement 😉
Robb Wolf says
The Kraken needs 2-3 weeks to prepare for each podcast, so he WILL be back regularly, just not each week.
Jeff says
Hey Robb,
If you want the intro to the podcast re-recorded, shoot me an e-mail!
Robb Wolf says
Thanks Jeff! I think we might retire that intro though…it was the Days of The Deas. We’ll see what might fit for the the Greg Everett Era.
John Wells says
Andy just couldn’t carry on with no Coffee.
Debbie says
Awww, Robb, I am sad to see the Andy Dea’s element leave the podcast. His fight with caffiene addiction and beardology are legendary, as is that tremendous Santa worthy chuckle of his.
I did like the chemistry with you and Greg and I will adjust. But Andy will always be my first cohost and is not easily replaced. To say his shoes are hard to fill is most likely an understatement. I am guessing size 13’s?
Love the show, the sound was great on #70. I will continue to listen, with fond memories of the Wolf/Deas era gone by.

Jaska says
Mr. Deas, thank you for the great work you did with the podcast. You will be missed!
Zane says
Andy will definitely be missed. Really interested to see what Greg will bring to the table.
Trees says
Me too another fan of the Deas, with that fabulous deep hearty laugh – that alone made me smile. You will be missed – maybe you’ll be a guest one day?
geekfish says
Andy, Leaving, so sad. Spinning Robb out so bad.
Will miss you Andy.
Best of luck in your next ventures Andy. Listening to you guys for 66+hours now, I am going to miss the chemistry.

Brenden says
We all know Andy left to conduct in depth experiments to prove to Robb that he indeed has more then 6 listeners.
-Andy if you are leaving The Paleo Solution A regular blog post is in order. Looking forward to seeing what big things you have going on, Cheers Andy!
