We have been running a crossfit facility for close to 6 years now. We have learned a lot along the way on topics ranging from training to business to small group dynamics.
Interestingly, I’d say less than 50% of what I’ve learned over the past 5 years came about in our gym in some kind of “aha!!” moment. Some certainly did, but most of what I really value in my coaching came from learning from other people. When we first got going we helped at virtually EVERY crossfit certification at the old Santa Cruz box. Dozens of certs where we got to hang out at the Glassman’s house, see Greg & Luaren put on thier show…and it was DAMN good. Coach Glassman could keep a group of 40 people entertained all while unleashing serious crossfit hurt. In addition to the glassmans we were able to spend time with folks like Michael Rutherford, Mike Burgner, Mark Rippetoe and Chris Sommer. All these coaches have been doing their craft for years and have performed and coached at the highest levels…literally to the Olympics. From all these people I have learned a remarkable amount, and to whatever degree I am good at coaching it is largely because of spending time with all these people. I also had a potent desire to improve my skills so I can provide better coaching. Some folks can be ass-deep in solid coaching but are too stubborn or clueless to get any benefit from the experience.
So, that was my experience coming into this whole crossfit thing and how I have developed as a coach. The reality is few people GET this opportunity these days due to the fact that crossfit is growing at a remarkable rate. Folks attend a Level 1 Cert, learn a great amount of information, and are told to “Grab your neighbor and teach him or her how to crossfit…” This is an effective way of developing trainers but if you recall, I feel like less than 50% of what I’ve learned came from simply coaching people day to day. Most of what I have learned, and I’d say the BEST elements of what I have learned, came from spending time with other coaches and trainers. So, if someone takes this whole coaching and training thing seriously, they should really spend time with folks from whom they can learn. The coaches I mentioned above are must-haves. Another coach and athlete I highly recommend you check out is Dutch Lowy. Dutch is not only a top level athlete (#7 finisher at last years CrossFit Games, 1st place finisher at the Hells Half Acre Regional Qualifier) he is also a phenomenal coach who offers a training seminar that is OUTSTANDING.
When Dutch graduated college he took the better part of a year and traveled the states spending time at crossfit affiliates and working as a CrossFit Level 1 Instructor for many, many certs. We had him couch-surf at NorCal for nearly 2 weeks and tried to kill him with bacon and espresso while he was here…I credit his top 10 finsih at the games with this intense, highly secretive training! In all seriousness, Dutch gave us input on that first visit that improved our program. He came back about 6 months later for his Training Seminar and provided more input that improved our program. He is a legit coach and although young, he is very smart and never passses up an opportunity to learn and grow. Obviously I’m pimping his seminar, but Dutch is the kind of person you want to learn from….I simply can not recommend his seminar enough.

Robb, I couldnt agree more. I am owner of Crossfit Seven in Fort Worth where we are very lucky to have Dutch as a trainer while he’s in town and let me just say everytime the guy walks through my doors I learn somthing new. Dutch’s knowledge on coaching and programing is amazing and should be looked at as valuable resource.

I agree as well. I am a newby and meeting Dutch and learing about power curves, and output calculators and how to program was amazing. It is a shame that more of the affiliates haven’t experienced what he has to give. His training at his box and what he has experienced around the US is a testament that many could benefit.

This is a great post. I just registered last week for my first level one cert. at Crossfit One World. Lately I’ve been considering learning to train people since I already spend all of my free time researching Crossfit, other training programs, and fitness in general. Dutch’s seminar could be very useful for me in the future.
