Hey everyone! Last Tuesday, Robb and I released a podcast about the questions that we’ve been getting about the sleep formulation. This blog is for those that don’t want to listen to us prattle on for an hour, or those that want a little more information.
First, let me say that the site: https://docparsley.com/ has nearly all of these questions in the FAQ’s. With that said, I want to ensure you that those FAQ’s are growing because of your questions. We appreciate them, and we are taking action on many things that our audiences have brought up. So let’s kick this puppy off.
Ok for Everyday Use?
There seem to be a lot of people concerned about every day use, and for good reason. This isn’t exactly food, so it’s a fair question. Most of the concern seems to be if there is anything in this product that somebody might become dependent on. To an extent, the answer depends on what your definition of “dependent” is (I know, I sound like Bill Clinton here). If you consider “dependent” to mean that taking away something that usually helps you sleep, then the answer is yes. But under that definition of “dependent” we could also say that some people are dependent on the left side of the bed, dependent on flannel PJ’s, dependent on a dark room, etc. However, if we relegate the meaning to the medical definition, the answer is simply NO. You will not experience withdrawal symptoms of the sleep product (Well, maybe if you take 40+ packets per night for several months.) You can use normal doses for 1, 5, 50, 150, 500 days in a row, and the only thing that may build up in your system would be the vitamin D3, but depending on how much sunlight you get, and if you already supplement with D3 this is also unlikely. One final Vitamin D3 comment: taking Vitamin D3 at night will not cause insomnia. This is a common, but completely untrue misconception.
Normal Production of Melatonin?
Others question whether or not it will interfere with normal production of melatonin. Simple answer: Absolutely not. Our dosage is well below the level that would cause that. You would need at least 600% more melatonin than we use, and probably twice that.
If you’ve read my other blogs, if you’ve listened to our last podcast, or if you’ve watched our video on DocParsley.com you may remember that our product contains just enough supplements to help kick-off the melatonin production, and a dusting of melatonin to get it started. Melatonin is instrumental in helping us coordinate our circadian rhythms. L-tryptophan, 5HTP, Magnesium, Vitamin D3 are all required to make melatonin.
Once melatonin levels start going up, your brain produces and releases a neurotransmitter called GABA. GABA helps slow down your neocortex—that big wrinkly bit that separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. That is why we have the final ingredient phGABA. Since GABA can’t get into the brain very easily, some tricky biochemist figured out a way to get it into the brain by adding the “ph” part—which is a non-polar ring. That allows the GABA to cross into the brain.
That’s it folks!!! That is the entire supplement. Nothing magic, but it sure works well.
Flava Flav
We have been listening to your concerns about flavoring, but so far we haven’t found any way to make it taste better (or as good) without the stevia and xylitol. We are trying a run with sugar alcohols, we’ll see how that goes. But there are things you can do now: If it’s too sweet for you, put in more water, some lime juice or lemon juice. If it’s not sweet enough, use less water. Also—as it says on the box and packets—it is designed to be consumed as warm as a night-time tea. It definitely mixes and tastes better in warm water. One client told me that cold water made it taste like a sour apple, and warm water made it taste like mom’s apple pie;-)
Bioavailability
While we are on that, I’d like to point out that this product was designed with DOD, LEO’s, frequent red-eye flyers, shift-workers, and first responders in mind. It is easy to carry around, it will last 52 forevers on the shelf, it takes up very little room, in other words, it’s handy and neat! But, it is also designed to be a liquid for a very important reason: bio-availability. If you take a bunch of different pills, some are pressed, some have a glycerin shell, some have a gelatin shell etc. They dissolve slowly, unreliably, and at different rates. I frequently find some of my daily vitamins in the toilet. 😉 We designed this product so that you could get ALL of the ingredients immediately, and at the same time. That is one of the reasons that it works so well, and that is the main reason that it is so hard to flavor well. Most people know within a few hours of their first packet if the product works for them or not. There are a few people that need to use it for a few days or maybe a week before they are sure—but that is very rare.
Shipping
We are working hard to ship internationally, and we will be announcing it as we bring on new countries. We are also working with shipping companies to bring down shipping cost. I expect that to happen very soon.
Finally, if you wake up in the middle of the night, just take the cocktail again. Split it: take half when you are going to bed, and drink the other half when you wake up in the middle of the night. If you have no problem going to sleep, don’t take it before bed, just take it when you wake up in the middle of the night, and then lay back down, and breathe/relax/meditate etc.
What if I Wake Up in the Middle of the Night?
And, finally, finally, if you have to get up in the middle of the night to tinkle, just mix it with less water. But, you might find that you do not need to do that, because when you sleep really well, your kidneys make less urine at night. If our supplement is helping you sleep more deeply, you might find that as bonus to the product.
So there you go folks: most of the big questions answered. Let’s recap—it works! It won’t cause dependence, it’s safe for daily use, you can alter the flavor and volume, and it’s getting cheaper. I can’t quite see the weak spot in there, but I’m still listening.

Hi Robb,
My boyfriend has type 1 diabetes and is always tired. I think he has some form of sleep apnea because he snores and sometimes wakes himself up in the night which obviously is not conducive to a good night’s rest. I am wondering if this product would be safe for him to take since he also takes long lasting insulin before he goes to bed.
Thank you!
Kristina

Have him run it by his endocrinologist but I cannot think of how the sleep cocktail would be a problem.

I am a flight nurse and have to wake abruptly/get out the door quickly the nights I’m on call. Can I take the sleep tea and still wake up, be alert enough to drive and take care of my patients without killing anyone? The thought of maximizing the sleep I do get sounds amazing and I’m hoping it will help with my fat loss goals as well!
Thanks!

Maggie-
doc Parsley talks about this in the FAQ at his site. It should not be a problem, but clearly something worth experimenting with.
Tabitha says
Just. wanted to say I dearly love this stuff. I’m getting the best sleep I’ve had in 20 years and actually look forward to going to bed instead of dreading it. Glad to know long-term use is OK. I was hoping that I wouldn’t need it after a while, like maybe my brain would learn how to sleep well again after many years of dysfunction. Is that possible?
Steve says
Wondering if this is available in Australia at all (?) The website ships to United States only it seems…
Thanks for any help. Cheers.
Kate says
Is it safe for use during pregnancy?
David says
The FAQ’s link in the first paragraph is broken.

I am currently taking 3mg of Lunesta to sleep at night, and I have been taking it for about 6 months. How do I switch from Lunesta to the Sleep Cocktail?
Whiskeysean says
Robb,
Now I need something to take in the morning. I mean besides coffee.
Got a recommendation for a multi vitamin that hits what the sleep cocktail misses?
Greg says
It looks like a good supplement and I love Doc Parsley and everything he is about. But what I can’t understand is how could this be so expensive. With shipping about $2.30 a serving is a little too crazy for some very simple and easy to find ingredients. Sorry, it’s just hard to stomach paying that much for such a simple sup, but I do want to try it. Thanks.

Can you take this while smoking marijuana for sleep as well?

Dr. Parsley’s formula contains a drug known as phenibut. It is not a legal dietary ingredient. Please look into it. The FDA will crack down on this one day soon. I’m hope this gets posted as its true and not an attack on any one individual. Just the reality about a product, kind of how Robb talks about the reality of food and agribusiness. Well, this is not a legal dietary supplement as long as it contains a drug originally manufactured in Russia with at least a few publications of withdrawal and dependence.
Squatchy says
The dosage in the Sleep Remedy is so small that there shouldn’t be any need for concern at all. Phenibut is not illegal either, and is not a controlled substance.
This is from Dr. Parsley, originally on Ben Greenfields site:
“phGABA” is phenibut. Whoever wrote that might have been confusing it with pharmagaba when they said it’s “another animal”—which is sometimes denoted as pmgaba.
Phenibut is classified as a supplement, but has been used/sold as a nootropic. However the “nootropic” dose was 100 to 1000 times more than what is in our product. The high end of the doses (2.0-2.5 MILLION mg) resulted in two case reports (one dependence and one withdrawal), in all of the medical literature.
The dosage of phenibut in our product (very small) is out of your bloodstream within a few hours, and therefore won’t result in receptor down regulation (tolerance) that would be associated with dependence or withdrawal.
This is almost exactly the same scrutiny that Vitamin D3 went through for nearly a decade. First, it is actually a hormone not a vitamin and there was a lot of talk about it needing to be a prescription—primarily because of 2 case reports of “Vitamin D3 Toxicity”, which again, were two men taking 2-2.5 million iu’s of vitamin D3 per day for over 6 months.
The poison is in the dose of anything. 1-3 Tylenol—> decreased pain. 100-300 Tylenol—>death. 2 grams of Kava root per day—> liver failure, etc.
Hope that helps!

The sleepcocktails.com website apparently was lost/hijacked and, since January 2019 is run by someone in Japan.
Does anyone have a new URL?
