Hey folks!
Just wanted to let you know about an amazing project which is an extension of the Human Gut Microbiome, American Gut.
Let me back up a minute: The Human Gut MicroBiome was a project designed to map the genes of “all” the gut microbes in the human gut. It had a phenomenal start, but the sample was small and in relatively healthy individuals. We are getting a pretty good sense that changes in health may track closely with changes in gut flora. In order to get a better understanding of this story, the Human Food Project is organizing a study to sample as many people, from as many backgrounds as possible.
You can read all the details here. The email sign-up is near the bottom of the page.
If you do not live in the US don’t worry, we are nto ignoring your poop! I’ll let y’all know about future projects in other locations.
At the end of 2010 I was on a radio interview and was asked “What do you think is the most important area of health related research we will see in coming years?” I paused a moment and then said “Extensive mapping and study of the gut Endobiome.” The amount of understanding we will gain from this project and spin-off activities is staggering. We carry far more genetic material in the form of our gut microbes than in our person. How these critters affect our lives is akin to a buried treasure, albeit somewhat coprolite in nature! In all seriousness, this is a really important project. Lend a hand (or some poop!) if you can.

I feel like I’ve just been enlightened, my brother turned me onto you (that never sounds right) and I’m just beginning to start with Paleo and read your books. Love everything so far, I used to think I was eating/living completely fine but now I feel like I’ve just been misinformed for years. Blindly walking down the path of ignorance. Thanks so much Robb!!

Isn’t the answer about conventional versus organic meat against the position of grassfed beef being much healthier, or am I interpreting this wrong:
Q4. Do the following play a role in shaping the human gut microbiome? Sorry for the long list.
(1 = strongly disagree and 10 = strongly agree)
There were several sub questions in this question. Questions were:
Birthing method (c-section vs vaginal): Results 8.3
Length of breast-feeding (months, years): Results 8.0
Early childhood exposure to antibiotics: Results 9.3
Lifetime exposure to antibiotics (all sources): Results 9.2
(Hygiene) Lifetime exposure to animals, soil, etc: Results 9.1
Sodium in diet: Results 3.6
Taking vitamin supplements: Results 3.5
Organic vs conventionally grown vegetables: Results 4.7

For all of you around the world who also want to sequence your microbiome… check out our crowdsourced project at http://www.indiegogo.com/ubiome. We are a group of young scientists sequencing the human microbiome, anywhere in the world!

I guess by now you know that your American Gut website on Indegogo is down:
“The page you are looking for is no longer available or has been moved.”
