Hey folks, just wanted to provide a bit of recent media coverage on the risk assessment program here in Reno, NV. If you missed my first piece on this, you can find that here.
You might remember Dr. Kim Mulvihill and her 5 part news piece on paleo, looking at the AHS and research conducted by Dr. Frasetto from UCSF. I was able to talk with Dr. Mulvihill in between talks at PaleoFx and I told her about the program going on in Reno. She was pretty interested and came out on two occasions to interview the players in this story.
This link is to a solid write up on the News piece by KCBS, but most of the pertinent information is in the videos below:
Sorry, I cannot for the life of me get the damn embed codes to work.
Pretty impressive stuff and as always, the economics are what will either make or break this program. As it stands right now however, the ROI is remarkable.
We’ve received hundreds of inquiries from folks in various Police/Fire/MIL agencies. We are working on standard operating procedures to ship to folks so they can replicate programs like this.
And just to keep you off the streets causing trouble, here are some videos from the recent Specialty Health conference looking at insulin resistance, cancer and brain aging. Gary Taubes, Dr. Tara Dall (from the National Lipid Association) and several local doctors are on the various panels.
Now after all that love fest, we need little dose of reality. This video is of a Harvard Forum on Food Policy and Nutrition. In attendance are luminaries Such as Stephan Guyenet, Robert Lustig and the always clueless, Walter Willett, of the Harvard School of Public health. It’s interesting, Willett seems to believe that epidemiology + con-founder tinkering= the full scientific method. It’s obvious the Evolutionary template is no-where on this guys radar. So, as much good stuff as we have going on, we still have a long way to go baby!

What is happening in Reno is WILDLY exciting. Way to go Robb! My man is a cop, and I’m hoping that his department will take note of this program and implement it too. He’s adopting a more paleo way of eating because of yours truly, but it would be great if I wasn’t the only one hammering it into him!
Did anyone else notice that the video embedded in the news article kicks off with an advertisement for none other than… KASHI CEREAL BARS!? Seven whole grains on a mission – to give people diabetes. The irony destroys me.

Great stuff dude. I always thought the economic route was the only way to get this whole gig disseminated and into the mainstream.
Willet in that last video was pretty cringe worthy! ‘i’m 100% certain that replacing red meat with grains legumes and nuts will improve cardiovascular outcomes’ hardly something a good scientist would say. Clearly a very intelligent/knowledgable dude, but he cannot see the limitations of epidemiology. He did mention controlled food trials briefly, shame none of the trials carried out off the back of his observational research has ever confirmed his original hypothesis.
Shame Guyenet didn’t get more air time, he seemed to be the most well informed of the four and his manner isn’t as abrasive as Lustig’s.

I work in law enforcement and would like to share this with my boss. Please let me know how I can get the information and when it will be available.
Great work!

The Reno Program will hopefully reach a few more peole who are in a position to make changes or at least bring awareness to greater numbers of the public.
The Harvard Forum on Food Policy and Nutrtition video was interesting. As you say, still a long way to go.

Hi Robb,
I am a holistic nutritionist in Edmonton, Canada and would very much like to present this concept to my local EMS/fire/police.
How can I be put on a list to get the standard operating procedures for implementing this? Also, did you approach them with the idea or vice versa?
Thanks so much!

I’ve been telling everyone I know about this study. I am so excited to see this spread!
Ankit says
Dr. Lustig says MCT oil is bad. Is that because of oxidation?
Thnk,
Ankit

Hello, I would also like to be put on “the list” to receive how to implement this program with ems/fire/police. I am a third year pjhysical therapy student and would love to implement this in the immediate community, as well as, use this as a tool to encourage interaction with the Quillen college of medicine here at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. Thanks
