That was awesome.
I remember those days spent in the lab pipetting, lol. Now that I think about it, pipetting really does take up most of the time when doing experiments, haha.
Steven-
I just remember fucking up a huge number of experiments due to bad pipetting…so meany reaction wells, so little time.

+1 for workin’ it with “salad”. I’ll be taking these Huggies, and uh, whatever cash you got.

After 6-9 years of college you too can have limited human contact but ample contact with dangerous viruses (and retro don’t mean stylish), bacteria and a host of modified microbes, long hours of monotonous work, average pay, daily contact with bio/chemical/radioactive hazardous wastes, mutagens, antigens, carcinogens, testicleshrinkogens, septum melting volatile gases, explosive mixtures, feces eating aggressive mice with sharp pointy teeth… the public generally hates you and pursues aggressive and frivolous lawsuits daily.
Come back Robb, plenty of room at my laboratory bench.
Then again, being your own boss, owning one of the top gyms in America under the banner of the fastest growing fitness movement in human history, coaching cool guys and super hot babes daily… not bad amigo, not bad.
Hey, at least there are smoking hot-n-smart sales reps, like the one who sent me that link. 🙂
Ah yes, the hot sales reps. No science background, cute smile and banging little fannies. I do miss my lab days occasionally…usually right after one of our clients laments for the 104th time :it’s just hard to give up bread…is that why I’m still fat?”
Ah, the days of inanimate objects!

Say goodbye to the p20! Now, if only Eppendorf would build a robot for writing grants…
Love the blog, Robb. I’m seriously strung out on the archives.
Orie…I think that desribes most of the PI’s I worked for! Not sure if the were Eppendorf grads or not!

Damn! You caught me! I’m definitely a geek because I thought that was hilarious. That’s a good test to see who “gets” the geekiness and who doesn’t. And yes, the girl is far from ugly.

Robb – absolutely hilarious! I was a geek like that – in high school and college!
Andy-
At least you emerged from your geekdom. I am still well immersed.

Robb,
This is not related to this post at all, but because I couldn’t find your email address anywhere, I figured I would just post to your sight. So Kelly Starrett (my coach) and I have been getting into a couple of discussions on the benefits/downfall of working out in a fasted state. Basically he advocates eating before working out. I am someone who generally crossfits at 6am and therefore am not a big fan of getting up even earlier to try and get something into my stomach. I almost always eat immediately after (my 4 block zone meal) however I was wondering if there is any science or theory to the benefit of eating or not eating before an early morning workout. Additionally I have traditionally had a weak stomach, and feel that it takes quite a bit of time for me to digest food. Which are part of the reasons that I don’t eat beforehand. Anyway any help you could provide would be awesome. BTW the most recent discussion/post is here: http://sanfranciscocrossfit.blogspot.com/2008/06/five-fingered-fat-attack_30.html. The previous one is here: http://sanfranciscocrossfit.blogspot.com/2008/06/brainwashing-time-change-and-fight-gone.html
Thanks,
Nick
Hey Nick-
I think it’s a bit dependant on how one is wired and the potential gaols. If muscle gain is of top priority it’s a very good idea to put some food down. For general CrossFit-Bad-Assedness I think tinkering with a fasted state is really smart and beneficial…but it’s important to do whatever allows each individual to train with the highest average intensity. If one is falling over from low blood sugar not so good. Similarly, if your feeling like you might toss because you ate too close to training also not good (this tends to be me BTW).
So I think there are some individual differences here that we need to keep in mind but ones goals and wiring should help to drive the decision to eat or not eat pre-WO.
Robb
Oh yea! You are one of the winners of the Essay Contest! Congrats!

Robb, I met you at the CF Seminar in San Diego back in May. I was wondering how your nutrition seminar went and if you will be holding one here in San Diego.
Quick zone question. I do 2-3 hours of Jiu Jitsu a week and 3-4 crossfit workouts a week. Im about 185-190 lbs and about 12% bf (according to Mastering the Zone). I calculated that I should be eating about 26 blocks of each which equates to about 2100 calories. I followed for a few days and was STARVING!!!! I read a post a couple days back where you mentioned to increase the fat blocks. I’m thinking of increasing to 50 blocks of fat (with 26 blocks of protein and 26 of carbs). This will increase my calories to about 2400. Are my calculations off? Is the fat increase ok? Thanks in advance for your help!
-Grumpy
Chris!
That sounds like WAY too many blocks…I’m thinking more 18-19. You might be hungry for a few days, or you may need to tweak the carb content a bit…I wrote a piece for the Performance Menu “42 ways to skin the zone”. it covers this really well. You will lean out on this consumption level quite quickly…one yo9u are at a desired level of leanness up the fat to 3x and see how you feel and perform. Keep me posted on your progress! The nutrition seminar dry run went great! Not sure why HQ did not post the group phots…go figure. We Have one next weekend in SF that is currently sold out. We will be doing a few in Chico but steve serrano in Huntington Beach offered to host one as did Stephane Rochett at USD. We will be down your way soon!
Let me know if this clarifies thing on the food front.

Robb,
“Great” Video. I went the physics route in college, so I truly fit the Geek billet. Just wanted to thank you again for the incredible presentation and discussions at the Lvl 1 Cert at the Blauer Tac Center. I now have a new hero to add to my ever-expanding list (Coach G, Rut…). I’ve cut to 16 blocks, 3xF and am using the post WOD window to intake 1/2 my day’s carb blocks. I’ll let you know how I feel. Does that window still apply for an M.E. day (i.e. not a metabolically tasking WOD)? We’re hitting Trader Joe’s and Costco this weekend with a much broader view than in the past. Lots of new veggies to explore (other than my 3 lbs+ of broccoli everyday).
Hey Jeremy!
Thanks for the kind words Amigo! The Blauer center is going to be sick…20,000sqft is a lot of room to play! You can play with the PWO carbs at that 50% level. If you get a carb bonk after that meal just dial things back to a normal intake level. It should work quite well!

Robb, just saw your response to my zone question yesterday. I’ll keep you posted on my progress. I have a quick question about “sympathy sickness.” We just found out my wife is pregnant and she keeps teasing that I will get sympathy sickness. Do you know the science behind that or is it a myth? I don’t feel the sickness my wife gets but she insisted that I ask you if there is such a thing about “sympathy gas.” I know it sounds silly, but I’ve been affected by something and I haven’t changed the types of food I eat. Thanks for all your help!
Chris-
I’m not sure about the “sympathy sickness” stuff. If your boobs start to sympathy-grow however we will have a very interestign situation indeed!

Robb,
That was hilarious (ROFL), even if I have to admit being a geek after many years in the lab.
I haven’t experienced sympathy sickness, but used to have “sympathy weight gain” during my wife’s pregnancy. I managed to avoid it this time around through CrossFit and the Zone. My wife just delivered my 4th child, a beautiful boy.
Regards,
Steven
glad you liked it! FOUR kids (4) quatro!!! Congrats Steve, setting the bar high!
