Seems like everyone is raving about the benefits of fasting, especially for autophagy.
(If you don’t know, autophagy is the process by which your body cleans out old, damaged structures and cells to make room for the new, healthy ones.)
While fasting is definitely a useful tool to keep in your health-kit, it’s not the only way to increase the autophagy process. Watch this video to hear more ways to autophagize.
Robb, please don’t swear
Thought you came out a little hard against medium roast. From the roasters I talked with, medium roast beans are generally of a better quality. Not a hipster here.
I typically train at the end of a ~24hr fast, largely because most of my training is capoeira class and that’s on a schedule. Is it compromising the autophagic response if I, say, fast from noon Friday until some time Saturday late afternoon/evening, and train 1-3pm Saturday? Am i cheating myself out of the training benefits by feeding close after?
I don’t believe so, it’s hard to say exactly with what we currently know, but I would think you would be fine.
Dark roast coffee! You made my day!
So being that I have an allergy to coffee, which I know sucks, and so I can’t use coffee for autophagy. There is the option of some IF and exercise of course, but I was wondering about tea. Would Green Tea, Black Teas, or any kind of teas help with autophagy of the brain? Exercise helps out with the muscles and other tissue, but I was still wondering about the brain.
I believe so, potentially. It seems like green and black teas that have EGCG (which is a Caloric Restriction Mimetic) would potentially help with autophagy.
I was curious. Actually, don’t usually drink green and black teas either. However, exercise is probably a bigger source for autophagy for me at the moment. Thank you for your reply.
Excellent video!! So much info in a short time. I personally have been “obsessing” over intermitten fasting and making sure I make it to the correct hours. This has given me a new understanding of what I should be paying attention to without the everyday stress of waiting 10 more minutes to eat at the 18 hour mark! Thank you so much!!
Yes, yes and more yes. So much extremist madness out there. Thank you.
Thank you for the voice of reason in a sea of people losing sight of the bigger picture- life is supposed to be enjoyed!
Thanks also for the great info on coffee inducing autophagy, that makes my day!
Damn Robb, shots fired on the coffee front. You sound like mom over the holidays clamoring for her French roast k-cups when I stroll in with some single origin ray of light. Yes, ray of light.
Anyways, no hard feelings (I hope). Loved this post.. as someone who skips breakfast during the week for a million reasons, usually nothing to do with “FASTING”, I’m glad to hear you say this. I took part in your Keto Masterclass and was struck by the protein argument. No matter what my goals are at the time, I always keep a watchful eye on how much protein I’m getting and try to round out my calories with veggies and quality fats.
I’ll give the 2-3 full days fasts a try. Thanks!
That was offensive. Not professional at all. I’m cancelling.
Hey Robb – can you provide a reference re: post-exercise & autophagy study? Thanks! – Bob

Geez Robb — in the first 40 seconds you said ‘fucking’ TWICE! HOW am I supposed to share this video with folks, esp. older folks who would benefit? Was it necessary!? Did it add any meaning or information to this video?! Please stop the degradation of our society; it’s happening fast enough without wise and important people carelessly adding to it! Thanks.
I understand the backlash against Ye Olde Hipster Shitbags, as I live in Portland, but I legitimately enjoy lighter roasts, not because they’re trendy. Can you provide links to papers that would provide some information on why decaf and dark roasts are more beneficial for autophagy and for your brain? Thanks, Robb!
Here’s a quick one https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21809439
NCBI is good by me, however short it may be. Thanks, Robb.
