Good episode. I really like the special guest episodes; I’ve found a lot of interesting people I probably wouldn’t have otherwise.

Awesome Podcast Robb. You and your guests are writing the book on treatment of chronic disease and Dr. Ruscio just added a couple new chapters. Here’s what I took away from today’s episode:
Overall guidance on treating chronic disease:
– Diet, sleep, stress, and sun first
– Vitamins, Herbs & minerals (concentrated doses of natural products) next.
– Pharmaceuticals next (blunt tools, lots of side effects).
– Surgery as a last resort (removing an organ is permanent).
* Obviously there will be exceptions but that provides a starting point.
Dr. Ruscio Chronic Disease Levels :
Level 1) Auto-Immune / Paleo Diet will fix (50-75% of pop):
– Lower blood sugar by getting carb balance right.
– Heal the gut by eliminating grains & legumes
– Lower inflammation by eliminating seed oils and improving the quality of meat.
– Get more sleep.
– Lower Stress.
– Get outside for some Vitamin D.
– (I’d add daily mobility work to make sure muscle contractions are getting the lymphatic system to do it’s job).
Level 2) Gut Pathogens / Hormonal Disregulation
– Testing & Naturopath Dialogue required to develop a VERY specific treatment.
– MD testing won’t necessarily identify the problem (great point on an MD’s reference point of normal (a sick population)).
Leve 3) Conundrums
– Great discussion on Bio-films.
Keep it going! MD medicine has stagnated and you guys are serving as a great center of gravity for the Kurt Parsleys, Michael Ruscios, Chris Kressers and all the others who are getting the rock up the hill.

Can you link to some of the studies relating to immunization and later autoimmunity? I’m having trouble finding them on my own.
Robb Wolf says
I don’t understand the question amigo.
Justin says
I did a little more digging and found the article from the New England Journal of Medicine that Dr. Ruscio referred to (“The Effect of Infections on Susceptibility to Autoimmune and Allergic Diseases” – http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMra020100), which was from 2002, not 2012 as is says in the transcript.
This is the type of study that my question was referring to. I don’t think I realized at the time of my question that he mentioned a specific study.
While I was eventually able to find the above study, it would be really helpful if you could generally provide some links to studies related to the various podcasts that you put up. When discussing similar topics with friends that may be “controversial,” I always want to have a study to back up any points that I make. These can be hard to find and when I don’t provide them, I am sometimes made to feel like a tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist nutbag.

Justin- I barely get the podcasts done amigo! We try to get some show notes but we can’t do it all for folks.
Adam says
Robb,
Does any of the information in the podcast apply to fungal sinus infections?
Anywhere I can get more information to help with that problem?
Thanks for the show and the great blog.
Adam
Robb Wolf says
No clue amigo. I suspect so.
Dr. Michael Ruscio says
Sinus fungus follows many of the same principles. It has to do with mucousal immunity. All mucous membranes tend to function together, when they become weak one can become more susceptible to infection anywhere; gut, ears, throat, nose, lungs, brain, skin… Hope this helps

One of the few mentions of Grave’s disease….my wife has Graves (hyperthyroid) and there is little information out there on how to deal with this without destroying your thyroid with RAI. Most Paleo information is about hypothyroid disorders.
Dr. Ruscio mentioned that Graves could be caused by an infection…which screens should we do as a minimal check to rule this out.
RAI may be the solution my wife needs, but I’m very worried about the long term implications.

Alex,
I am just finishing up an article on Graves’ that will discuss this. If you go to my website, you can sign up for my newsletter to be notified when its released. Hope this helps. http://www.DrRuscio.com

I would love to hear more about what the Dr endocrine numbers were looking before and after he eradicated his intestinal parasite.

Robb & Dr. Ruscio! This was definitely one of my favorite podcasts so far. Fantastic information, great interview flow, just really simplified the way to look at the overall process and takes things in reality a phase at a time. Excellent clinical perspective. Every recommendation that I heard was quality. Thank you for sharing this.
