Hi,
I’m 55 and have been at least 100-150 lbs overweight for the last 20 years. I take HBP meds and was borderline diabetic. When the scale reached 300 I got physically sick with disgust at myself and vowed to never see that number again.
My 28 year old daughter works out regularly at a Cross Fit gym, and she follows the Paleo Diet. I was a skeptic until I saw her success. I’m the kind of person who likes to know the “why” of things, so she gave me your book to read and said it really helped her understand why traditional diets don’t work for her. I read it cover to cover and told hubby we were going to eat like cavemen and go to our gym at least 3 times a week to get healthy and lose weight. He is a little overweight, but no health problems. He was just happy I was doing something and embraced our new way of life. We ate “clean” for 30 days. My daughter was astounded we took to it so well. I told her your book made so much sense. Even when I followed a heart healthy diet, I would get shaky in the morning and afternoon. I slept terribly and felt tired all the time.
First thing I noticed about eating Paleo was that the shakes stopped immediately, and all my swelling disappeared. No swollen ankles or hands. I can actually see my ankle bones again and wear my rings. I didn’t even get a headache the first few days as I always did on traditional diets. I haven’t lost as much weight as quickly as I thought I would, only 18 pounds, but I’ve gained muscle and can walk distance again. Hubby and I ate “clean” another 30 days. After 60 days of eating Paleo it was time for my checkup. I received The Best News Ever! My cholesterol dropped 50 points to 188. The lowest in 30 years. My A1C went from 6.7 to 5.4. My doctor was shocked and had to look again to make sure the correct results were put in my chart. He tried to put me on meds last visit for high cholesterol and diabetes. I asked him to give me 6 months to try to do it without the meds. He was reticent, but I promised to take the meds if my numbers weren’t better by November. Happily he told me they are not only better, but “good” numbers. My BP is still 130/70 with meds, so I’ll keep taking those meds. If I keep on my current path, my doctor assured me I can be off all meds very soon. Thank you Robb! Thank you for explaining why Paleo works and providing my family the tools to lead a healthier life.

P.S. Hubby and I went on vacation and ate approx 80% Paleo, but had no trouble eating clean again when we got home. 10 days home, now, and we’re still back on track.

You’re a boss, Kathleen! Soon you won’t need that stupid medication, either. 🙂
What’s shocking is that your doctor should be shocked but that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms, isn’t it? Congrats on your health/appearance upgrade. Stay sexy!

Good for you! Carry on!

Great story Kathleen. Big congratulations to you and your husband and good luck moving forward with this, although I do not think that you will need it!

I love hearing stories like this. I’ve been paleo for 3 months now and can honestly say I don’t miss the junk food and breads. Down over 25lbs now with the help of paleo + crossfit combo. I feel better than I have in 20 years.

Does anyone know if we can place our teenagers on this program?
Safe to do so? Would appreciate any comments.
Thxs,
Linda

Linda!
YES!! Get them started now. If they are active make sure they are eating enough and give them more liberal amounts of carbohydrate (sweet potatoes, roots and tubers, some fruit, etc). Paleo is definitely good for them! Let me know if there’s anything I can help you with to get them started.

It would be unwise to leave teenagers on a Standard American Diet. Here’s a secret.. your great grandchildren can manifest fewer diseases if your teens eat properly now. Its called epigenetics and it opens a Pandora’s box.
