I am 61 years old and had a fallout in the Spring after a two week trial. I re-equipped my cupboards with grains, beans, lentils, quinoa and brown rice and spelt pasta. I suffer from silent acid reflux for many years and was following the food combining for three years with great success, but GERD reappeared with a vengeance and I developed a chronic cough so bad that it really impaired my working and social life. A month ago, I chocked on roasted almonds so bad, I almost fainted. I got so scared that I started doing more research on Goggle and find that a diet with less carbs may cure GERD. I went back to Paleo. It’s been three weeks, my cupboards are empty again of all grains and starches. I had been walking 10 miles a day for the last 10 years but added the weight lifting to my morning stretching and I faithfully eat Paleo three times a day. I made it!! I’ve never felt sooooo great! I cough maybe once a day now and never during the night. I have no mucus in my throat when I wake up in the morning. I stopped constantly clearing my throat and I have lost another 10 pounds. My belly is flat like it was 20 years ago. I will never go back to grains and starches ever again. I notice that I cough now only after eating fruits so I limit myself to half of a fruit once in while and it’s fine. Unfortunately, my husband and I are not on the same page but he started seeing some muscles where I had none and asked me this morning over “our Paleo” breakfast if he could start reading my book The Paleo Diet – Robb Wolf….. so maybe there is hope! Again Robb, thank you so much for being so passionate and funny to read!

This post mentions food combining. I too was doing that before I found Paleo. Rob, I’d love for you to address that idea sometime on your blog as I think a lot of people have encountered it. Thanks.

This is a wonderful story! Big congrats! I hope it continues to work well for you. 🙂

Awesome story. Your husband will catch on soon. Just keep doing what you are doing and do not force it upon him. I’ve been paleo for 16 months and have seen my entire family pick up my eating habits. They are constantly asking questions. It’s awesome. Be patient and continue to have that passion that you have for living a paleo lifestyle!

This is very interesting to me. I’ve been eating Paleo since May and feel better than I ever have. My son has seizures and we are going to Seattle to start him on a Modified Atkin Diets and wondered if Paleo would be just as successful. I say its interesting as my son has always had a “gurgle” in this throat whether he is sick or not. He also had acid reflux when he was little. He is 4 now. The MAD is very limited carbs 20 or less so it will be interesting when we start of that goes away.
Congrats and coming back to Paleo. I believe dinner time is much simplier now I only have to worry about meat and veggies!!!!

Holly, A high-fat, low carb, moderate-low protein diet is great for seizure and epilepsy control! Really focus on Medium Chain Triglycerides for fat (coconut) and know what you are doing for your son is great!!

Amy,
Do you if Robb has done any research or know of any research done w/ eating Paleo and reduced seizures? I would be interested in learning and reading if there is.
Robb Wolf says
Look under ketogenic diets.

Yes on the coconut oil. I take about 3 tablespoons a day (I have had a seizure disorder since I was 15). I’ve been seizure free for 24 years now.
Just make sure the coconut oil is not hydrogenized. I get mine from Nutiva.

Dave thank you for the input. I think I will start trying to give him that also. He already loves his strawberry cod liver oil capusule by Nordic Naturals. Do you think cod liver oil and coconut oil would be over kill?
Congrats on being seizure free. I wish that for son and have a great feeling we will get there!!!

Hey Marie-Diane, Love your story! Like you, I eliminated acid reflux coughing and morning congestion with Paleo. And like you, I’m “older” — 59 — and never felt better.
