Hey Robb,
Kind of off topic but I would LOVE to get my hands on an old Crossfit NorCal Shirt. Any chance you guys have some laying around you’d part with?
Robb Wolf says

shoot an email to shawn at norcalsc dot com and he will get you squared away. You pay for shipping, and the shirt is on me.

Does a basic paleo diet (grass fed meats, seafood, veggies, some fruit, nuts, and good fat sources) help in gut healing and health? What do you think of regular intake of fermented foods like Kefir and Kombucha?
Does aged cheese with raw milk benefit at all besides use as a probiotic? I do not drink milk because I am very sensitive. But eating real cheese from raw milk and kefir from raw milk doesn’t make me flare up at all.
Are there benefits to adding these food to the paleo diet?
Robb Wolf says
Jeff-
Not a fan of dairy on gut health. raw krauts and similar items seem good. Goat yogurt might be a better option.
Travis says
What is the source for this information about primrose oil (or GLA) and acne? I own Cordain’s ebook “The Dietary Cure for Acne”, but nowhere in there is primrose oil, GLA, or DHGLA mentioned even once. Is it in one of his other products?
I’m having trouble finding more information on approaches to dealing with acne even when eating the paleo diet.
Robb Wolf says
Travis-
This si out of my head…do not remember the reference. I’ll try to find it.

Just want to throw out a plug for Lazy 69 Ranch in Northern California for Grass Fed Beef and Pastured Chickens and eggs. If you buy $250 worth of meat, (about 30lbs, fits in most standard size freezers) Free Shipping, to California and bordering states. They sell pastured eggs at local markets in Redding, CA also.
I am not affiliated with them in any way, just a long time podcast listener, seminar attendee who found a great place to get beef.
Robb Wolf says
Ehayes-
Thanks, I will get that on resources page.

I was watching Bizarre Foods on the Travel channel last night and they were in Mongolia. The Mongolians eat mostly beef, goat, sheep, and sometimes horse, plus a lot of dairy products from these animals. They prepare these foods in soups with root vegetables. I used to work with a lot of people from Mongolia and they would also bring in “botes or buuz”, basically steamed pot stickers (wheat dough). This got me thinking about the link between their food and common diseases.
We know that the Mongolians were prolific warriors who conquered more land and greater population in their first 25 years than the Romans did over their 400 year reign. This was partly due to their diet of protein and fat (from their vast herds of animals) but also because their enemies were eating mostly grain based diets.
Dr. Eades weighed in on this topic in 2006. There was also a good thread on Paleo Hacks about “paleo nomads”. Best Life magazine had an article called “The Diet That Conquered the World” but the punk ass dietician they consulted with suggested reenacting the diet with whole grain bread and low fat yogurt in addition to lean meat; rather than meat, animal fat, organs, root vegetables and real yogurt.
I googled around for some studies on western diseases in Mongolia hoping to find something that said they were healthy like the Massai, the Kitavans, or the Inuits (who were from the same bloodline; and what about that study of the inuit mummies with clogged arteries?). I found some stats that said heart disease was a problem and that they import more wheat flour and white rice than they did in the 80’s. But I really wanted to see something comparing the people in the cities vs the nomads in the countryside that adhere to the traditional diet.
At one time the Mongolians were certified ass-kicking fire-breathers on a diet of meat, fat, and dairy with some root vegetables thrown in. How come we only hear about the Kitavans and Inuits in the Paleo community? Is it just for the lack of in depth studies? Or is it their dependance on dairy? The 70s Big guys love dairy so maybe they would be interested.
Here’s some of what they are eating in Mongolia these days.

Robb (& Andy),
Great podcast! Unusually succinct on Robb’s part. Couple of follow-up questions to the issues raised:
1) Is it true that the original book cover was Robb naked, coated in fish oil cradling Keystone?
2) How could you and Andy miss the opportunity to line up jobs with a rock band as fitness and nutrition consultants/roadies. I imagine you trying to find enough 85% dark chocolate M&Ms to fill a brandy glass at 3am (no blue ones, obviously) Also, I was a bit disappointed that part of the question didn’t concern the combination of multiple sexual partners and “Paleo-cocaine”.
3) Reference the testosterone question: As I live in Saudi Arabia, if the Religious Police arrest me for possession of “testosterone-boosting audi-visual media” may I call you as an expert witness at my trial?
4) May I suggest a correction to your characterisation of a health and fitness goal as “to look good naked”? This is a bit too far upstream. It should be “to look good enough to end up naked”
Also, can you let Andy know that Boondock Saints 2: All Saints’ Day is on Saudi TV this week. I’m stoked! I haven’t even seen the original.
Tane
Robb Wolf says
Tane-
1-Man-Gato love is protected in California. I am not afraid.
2-We have failed again.
3-The day I am a character reference for anyone is a dark day for everyone.
4-Excellent point. Protects against “bad naked”. thinking ahead that.
You’d think the Saudi’s would have…perhaps not better taste, but SOME taste.

In regards to question #4 on today’s podcast…
Recently gave birth 4 weeks ago tomorrow to beautiful baby boy! Thanks to the awesome information in this podcast was inspired to go paleo while doing the pregnancy/breastfeeding gig–was even in the gym to rx wod on due date:) Every single aspect of pregnancy/delivery/recovery was improved in this pregnancy vs. my previous one. However, recently have been focusing on improving food quality (searching sources of grass fed meats, wild caught fish, organic veggies, etc can be tough in south georgia). In addition, I have been supplementing with 3-4g fish oil(especially in 3rd trimester and during breastfeeding due to fetal brain development.) Much to my surprise, my platelet count was low on morning of delivery and was not able to get an epidural. My gut feeling was that it was related to the fish oil supplement–since none of my previous CBCs indicated a low count. Your response to Emily’s question seemed to indicate that this supplementation level would be too low to cause a clinical change in blood counts. Any other thoughts as to why the low count? I think that they will be run again at my 6 week post partum checkup.
Anyhow, I’ve attributed Robb to making me undergo natural childbirth–where I would have been too chicken undertake it previously:) Seriously though, my undergraduate degree is in biochem, and I eagerly await every Tuesday so that I can geek out on this stuff. Thanks for all you do!
Robb Wolf says
Meghan-
Fish oil can reduce platelet aggregation (clotting) but should NOT change count. Might have had a little bleeding prior to delivery? Keep me posted.
Christian says
Ketosis = “ass mouth”.
I always thought ketosis typically generates (at most) a bit of a fruity/vinegary odor, and then mostly in people who aren’t greatly keto-adapted. That is, not really foul smell like halitosis.
True?
Anyway, thanks for a great show. I listen religiously every tuesday, and I’ve listened to every episode at least twice. Awesome education.

I seem to be having an issue with the podcast. I clicked the mp3 link on my iPhone and it brought me to an ASCII page of what I think is the data of the mp3. Can you guys check the link to make sure it’s working?

Great stuff Robb, keep it coming!
Quick question: Last night I cooked Chicken sausage, cabbage, and celery with ‘full fat’ (i.e. not ‘light’) coconut milk, and for desert I treated myself a few spoonfuls of coconut milk mixed with a tad of honey and cinnamon. This morning when I woke up I had a slight stomach ache and had looser than usual stools. How much coconut milk is too much? Could it have been the increased fat intake? Should I switch to maybe the ‘light’ version? I’m eating squeaky-clean Paleo, and it’s frustrating to have these random bouts of indigestion which I cannot really place my finger on.
Again, thanks for all the work that you do! Hope to see you here in San Diego some time soon?
Omri
Robb Wolf says
Omri-
that could certainly be it and that is a 1,000calorie meal! Unless you are on a mass gain I;d cut that serving by 1/2-1/4 and see how you do.

I have been tweaking my diet for about 5 months trying different things, and cant seem to wrap my head around one factor that has repeated positive results. I was clean 100 percent paleo for two months and made great gains then I started tweaking and added alcohol back in to my diet (mostly tequila, occassionally vodka), saw no adverse reaction in my diet or my performance. I recently went back off alcohol for two weeks and changed nothing else and noticed a drop in my performance and seemed to feel more sluggish and bloated. I mostly do Norcal margaritas and occassionally just have it straight and I will have one drink (although strong) 4-5 times a week. I am hoping that I am not displaying some confirmation bias in evaluating how i feel but cant seem to get past the results, no matter how illogical they may seem. Thoughts?
Robb Wolf says
Tim-
Might be a case where a little booze is good?
TrailGrrl says
Robb,
The podcasts are great. I’ve finally ditched my last paleo holdout food… Diet Pepsi. I was drinking 6 or more a day because I never learned to drink coffee. I’ve kicked before by using regular coke as a substitute because I would only end up drinking part of one in the am and pm to get rid of the withdrawal headache. But when at work I always returned to Diet Pepsi full-force with no cut-off switch in my brain.
I tried to go cold turkey, but was getting the headache. I didn’t want to go back to regular coke because I don’t want to get in that habit and gain a bunch of weight back after being paleo for about 3 years. Thanks to your posts I found something better than Diet Pepsi. A double shot espresso with a dollop of real whipped cream from Starbucks. Someone told me that I might like coffee if it was strong, and not like most people make it. Yee Haw! It costs more to get one, but one double is probably the same caffeine as 4 cans of DP so it all works out in the end and I don’t have the DP jitters that seem unique to diet sodas.
Thanks for the inadvertent help. Now I am going all over the city to find the best espresso cafe.

Hey Robb, regarding testosterone replacement, I’ve heard that nettle root can also help with this, any truth to it?
Thanks
Robb Wolf says

There is some literature on it. Have not tinkered however.

Hey Robb,
Heard that chlorophyllin is highly anti-mutagenic and that it has been shown to greatly supress cancer growth and development. I can’t find the studies now but one in particular showed an impressive reduction in liver cancer rates in Chinese. Chlorophyllin is semi-synthetic version of chlorophyll, or so I’ve read. Given this, would chlorophyl have the same effects? I have found information that 1 ounce of spinach contains 300mg of chlorophyl and the recommended dosage of chlorophyllin is 100mg before every meal.
If chlorophyl is equally as effective at reducing cancer as chlorophyllin than 1 ounce of spinach before each meal, say as a salad, would give you 900mg of chlorophyl per day, which would be 3x more anti-cancer action than chlorophyllin as a supplement.
I am right in my thinking or is there a significant difference between chlorophyl from plants and chlorophyllin as a supplement?
Robb Wolf says
Jay-
Not much info on it. differes from chlorophyl in the Copper ion in the porphyn group instead of magnesium.
You can never go wrong with eating your veggies!

did i have amazing deja vu, or did the summer mass gain, and testosterone topic get talked about on another podcast in the series? I literally had to check because I thought I had heard it before….I was stoked to hear it again, but now I’m wondering if my strict paleo diet has given me mystical powers of hearing the future….ps, I work at trader joes, and those damn 85% two pack bars seduce me every day to eat one of the two bars inside. Have you done any testing on the trader joe’s fish oil? twice the concentration (600mg of epa and dha) of the costco brand, and I talked to our vitamin lady in the office and there are two levels of third party testing on all the supplements at trader joes.
Robb Wolf says
Cliff-
good to know on the TJ’s stuff. Will chekc that out.
Jake says
Robb in this podcast you mentioned eating 100-150g of carbohydrates post workout for mass gain purposes. I have no idea how I could get that high on veggies alone. Do you have any good suggestions? I suppose sweet potato and berries but that’s like 10 cups of blueberries which would have a lot of sugar. I think that would be around 1 large sweet potato but that’s not giving much variety.
Thanks in advance.
Robb Wolf says
Jake-
Yams, sweet potatoes etc. Dense paleo carb sources.
Danny says
Hello Paleo team.
So ive got back from my little birthday treat away and I decided to go non paleo for it mainly just to see the outcomes.
here is what i found
Day 1- felt great eatting bread and sweets while driving to Newquay and cherry coke was amazing however the great feel subsided after a few hours with a hungover type feeling yet i wanted more food.
Day 2- felt grumpy on my awake and lack of energy had a cup of tea no milk as i cant stand the stuff in tea since going paleo. Went for a pub lunch had a kangaroo burger which was amazing with onion ring. through the night i was mainly picking at potato chips and drinking beer
Day 3 – woke up from a heavy night of beer felt like I wanted to kill myself grumpy didnt want to make eye contact with anyone in case I snapped felt like I hadnt really slept well throughout the night I stayed semi moody and had a negative frame of mind all day.
Day 4 – Woke up with the tell tale signs of a cold coming on heavy and cloudy head. feel just horrible all in all sore throat an had a little tounge ucler come up which I have never had before.
Anyway its now the following Thursday and I kept the non paleo up for a week. I must also add here in each of the top 4 day I was drinkin beer
Here is the conclusion
Non paleo = great for all of one day after that its a down fall they were alot more negative than positives to my gen well being. Also i have noticed the bottom of my belly looks a little more bloated out like how it was before I started paleo.
Sorry for the hijack just thought i would let you guys know how it went
Nicole Johnson says
You said that folks that have cleaned up their diet and still have acne flare ups are more sensitive to dairy and sugar. I have cleaned up the diet since march with maybe once a week getting cheese in my salad (I know, bad girl) but, my skin has cleared up a lot and inflamation has gone way down. I have since listening to the podcast ( yesterday ) hardcoded in my head DAIRY INTAKE = A FEW PIMPLES = NO DATES FOR ME! As for the sugar, does that include sugars from fruit? Or are you talking about added sugars say in almond butter spreads, or adding honey to sweeten. I went to the store yesterday looking for a snack and read every label and they all had so many grams of sugars, even a bag of plain almonds listed sugars in the nutrition facts. I ended up leaving the store with a bottle of water.
Robb Wolf says
Nicole-
I’m thinking more a lump-o-sugar.
Peter says
Robb,
On testosterone, I remember reading at Art Devany’s blog that he eats celery for, I think, the carotenes, which play a role in the production of testosterone.
I do have a question. You talked about eating 100-150 grams of carbs PWO as part of a mass gain program. Recently I noticed that winter squash is substantially less carb-dense than sweet potatoes, so I would have to eat 600+ grams (3+ cups) of squash to get 100 grams of carbs. That’s a ton of squash. Are my numbers correct?
Robb Wolf says
Peter-
Sounds right.
Mike says
Robb, random question, I’ve been using Carlson’s lemon flavored fish oil for a while now, and when I get down near the end of the bottle, the oil always tends to be more solidified, almost grainy. By that point is it mostly just the bits of SFA and MUFA that are left in there and as a result I should probably just ditch the bottle since there wouldn’t be much benefit left? Or is my fridge just too cold?
Thanks again!
Robb Wolf says
Mike-
No, there is a fractionation process that occurs. I think that stuff is still worth taking though.
Jay says
Hey Robb,
After reading the really sad news about Amanda Miller and being someone who is at a high risk for skin cancer (lot’s of moles, blue eyes) I had a checkup and the doctor removed a “suspicious” mole. The good news was that it was not cancer, the bad news was that it was indeed abnormal cell growth that left unchecked may have become cancer. She also felt that some other moles may be the same type of growth and now I have to see a dermatologist to determine which ones are to be removed.
My question is what more can I do nutrition wise to prevent any more of these abnormal growths? I already eat paleo 80-90% of the time. Once a week I might have a cheat meal but I don’t really have cheat days. I eat quite a bit of green leaves and broccoli and red cabbage and a lot of grassfed beef and pastured bacon. I use olive oil and coconut oil daily as well. I also eat blueberries and strawberries daily when they’re in season. Thanks Robb.
Just a suggestion as well, maybe you can put up a donation link for those of us who want to donate whatever we can to say thank you. You provide so much valuable info and help people transform their lives and you do it for free which is highly, highly commendable, but I’m starting to feel bad about not somehow contributing something for your valuable time.
Robb Wolf says
Jay-
I think you are on the right course. Take vit-d and get your levels checked and make sure they are 65-85. Some fasting might help, this is the Wold West with this stuff. No body knows much yet. Other forms of cancer appear to respond to these protocols very well. Melanoma, not sure yet.
I really appreciate the kind words. Instead of a donation button, just buy some books when they are ready. Recommend the seminars, buy some paleo brands schwag! Honestly, I LOVE what I do. The gym, the seminars, the blogs. I am so fortunate to do all this stuff and it’s hugely gratifying that it helps people.

great podcast as usual! I am one of those people who got worse acne after going paleo. The Cordain e-book did not go into that. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated! It sucks now I have cystic acne that i never had before and in more places!

it may go away in a few weeks, some gla (primrose) every other day may help as well. This happens enough that we should do a piece on this.
Squatchy says
Really diggin the pod cast, can’t wait for the book (have it pre-ordered at Amazon).
I know you get a ton of fish oil questions, but here it goes. I eat 100% paleo (except maybe some green beans). I eat 100% grass-fed/pastured beef and goat from local farms, canned wild caught fatty fish many times a week (salmon, sardines, herring), pastured/free-range eggs from a local farmer (supplemented with some organic feed too), and some organic chicken every once in a while, but mostly the beef/fish/eggs. I try to minimize my O-6 intake, eat very little nuts, very rarely ever go out to eat. I use coconut oil, coconut milk, shredded coconut (I love coconut) olive oil, and avocados for any extra fat. I’m pretty lean as well. Do you see any reason I should be taking fish oil? I try to keep my diet/lifestyle where I get everything from food without having to supplement at all.
Robb Wolf says
Squatchy-
You and I are pretty similar. I do about 4g/day. I think that is plenty.
Adam says
Hey Robb,
Great podcast as always, cortisol discussions are always interesting.
I remember you mentioning somewhere on the blog that your previous review of the biosig seminar was a little bit slanted due to pressure from your previous employer *cough*, but that you did like a lot of Poliquin’s stuff, and you’ve mentioned some of it in the podcasts, you said you would do a re-review some time with a little bit more journalistic freedom. Is this going to be posted (perhaps after your book launch), or would a quick unbiased blog post about the quality of poliquin’s material/protocols be possible?
Either way, looking forward to the book and next week’s podcast,
Adam 🙂
Robb Wolf says
Adam-
I need to do that. Will do it soon.

you’ve mentioned that your MMA athlete does really well on Paleo – do you have him up the Carbs at all? especially post workout? or is he actually down around 50g or less?
do you have him follow any specific water-cut protocol that last week? Just curious, as we have a lot of MMA athletes in our gym who would love to know how it’s working for that sport.
thx – enjoy your trip!

Really interesting study on the Vit D level needed to decrease insulin sensitivity / decrease insulin resistance: “Optimal vitamin D concentrations for reducing IR were shown to be 80-119 nmol/l, (32-58ng/ml) providing further evidence for an increase in the recommended adequate levels.”
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19781131
(This is from my university!)
divide nmol/L by 2.5 to get ng/ml
Another good reason to get yourself and clients tested. I have yet to see any of my clients with levels close to these, most of course don’t supplement when before I see them.

Robb, good discussion from Hyperlipid on palmitic acid: http://high-fat-nutrition.blogspot.com/2009/09/physiological-insulin-resistance-and.html Bottom line, “when putting metabolic derangement on trial, don’t shoot the messenger.” When discussing palmitic acid’s effects on insulin resistance, i think it is important to always relate negative impacts to excess carbohydrate intake along with the saturated fat. Thoughts?
He also has a palmitic acid / leptin discussion in the comments section of this post: http://high-fat-nutrition.blogspot.com/2010/03/getting-fat-is-good-official.html. He addresses a study. He admits his lack of overall knowledge on leptin, but does point out a major limiting factor in the test (regarding albumin levels in the test vs normal albumin levels)
Deep thoughts to put you to sleep tonight….or in Belize. Safe travels. -Jeremy

Hi Robb
I noticed some probiotics recommend refrigeration and some don’t. Is there a difference in quality between to two? Thanks
Robb Wolf says
Tom-
It really depends on the product as to is the heat stability is legit.
Greg says
Hey Robb,
I have a bit of a strange question for you.
Do you have any idea on how to eliminate borborygmi/intestinal noises?
They are caused by the displacement of gas in the intestines, so I guess excessive gas (swallowed air/bacteria fermentation in SIBO/or maybe candida), hyperperistalsis (no idea what might cause this) or obstruction are the causes.
I do experience some cramping and bloating along with the borborygmi so I am leaning towards bacterial fermentation. Dietary interventions haven’t really been effective, lower carbohydrate levels help but even a small cheat meal can leave me pretty embarrassed.
The noises started when I was about 17, 3 years ago. I think it was as a result of using antibiotics everyday for 2 years to help with some mild acne.
I tried to get my doctor to prescribe Rifixamin, but doctors in Ireland seem to be about 10 years behind and are stilling clinging to the IBS is psycosomatic myth.
I have been pounding back live yogurt and probiotics. Have managed to stay gluten free apart from a few intermittent slips. I don’t consume any fructose. My diet at the moment is meat, poultry, eggs, E.V.O.O, coconut oil, some vegetables, cream, butter, yogurt and some potatoes.
I supplement with Vit D and fish oil.
I would really appreciate your thoughts on the matter, whilst probably not life or death, it is important to me.
Cheers,
Greg.
Robb Wolf says
Greg-
I’d tinker with some kind of elimination approach. What things cause the most gas? Remove those. Otherwise you sound on track. Let me know if you tinker with that.
Alejandro says
Robb,
thanks for answering my question about acne. I didn’t want to post until I finished reading the book you recommended. What I can get from it is to try to better balance my O6:3 ratio, all other things I am currently doing (really good read, thanks for the reference). I have changed my plant fat sources to only coconut oil and macadamia nuts, both low in PUFA. I am also doubling my fish oil intake.
I don’t know if dropping all fruits will help. I know Nicole asked about this, you answered “I’m thinking more a lump-o-sugar”. Unfortunately, I don’t know what that means, English is not my first language and I am not aware of many of the idioms. 🙁 Do you think it is a good idea to try to get clear with VLC and then add fruits back in?
Robb Wolf says
Alejandro-
I’d try adding in GLA, and minimize your fish oil intake for a month. See if this affects the acne. We will have Prof. Cordain on the podcast soon to talk on this topic.
Dan says
I know I’m late but I’m really hoping someone can help me,
I’m 18, 190lb 14% bodyfat and looking to add strength through full paleo. Mass/strength gain through Starting Strength and paleo + GOMAD worked but I gained a lot of bodyfat. I most likely did the program wrong. I’m sick of feeling horrible and I’m trying for a cyclic-keto Anabolic Diet deal, just to see where it goes.
I want to do a ketogenic paleo + whey for pure strength and body comp BUT…I also have acne.
My (highly respected) dermatologist, who prescribes more Accutane than anyone else in the United States, thinks that dairy MIGHT be an acne causer but in the end he think it’s all about oil secretion no matter what, and that it can’t be avoided in young people. I happen to disagree thanks to the podcasts, but I’m a layman. I’m sick of getting stabbed at with needles to remove pimples, which they want to do to me once a month or more.
I desperately want to prove to them that my acne can be cured with diet, and part of me would thoroughly enjoy laughing in their faces with clear skin. (I had to say that.) Is my best shot to eat tons and tons of meat until I hit 1g/lb of protein and supplement with ZMA and fish oil? Is beef protein possible? All that meat seems overwhelming and I’m getting hungry a lot.
(Final side note; I’m on Minocycline which I’d love to chuck back through their window.)
Thank you so much for your time,
Dan
(PS, to Rob if he answers this: I apologize for consuming this much of your vacation. I’ve been to Belize and it’s a kickass place to visit)
Robb Wolf says
Dan-
Belize kicks ass. Amazing. Dairy, in virtually ALL forms (perhaps butter and cream excepted) contributes to acne. Ditch that, and you will likely be acne free.

By beef protein I meant isolate, in some powder form. My mistake

hey robb,
question about 85% dark chocolate. is it possible to overdose on this stuff to the point that it can negatively impact on sleep (because of the caffeine)? i’ve had a little trouble getting to sleep recently and i suspect its because of the dark choc which ive been eating at night. up to 60 grams at a time. i never drink coffee/soda/energy drinks so im likely to be sensitive to caffeine. I’m taking the dark choc out for the moment and will see if it makes a difference. otherwise, im curious if cocoa consumption can impact on sleep quality? or is the caffeine content just too insubtantial.
thanks,

Robb Wolf says
ADS-
Not much caffiene, lots of theobromine, another CNS stimulant. It certainly could keep you awake.
Greg says
Thanks for your response Robb.
Whilst I have been able to reduce the borborygmi on pretty restrictive diets, a lot more restrictive than the one I listed, I have never been able to eliminate the noises completely.
I have given up dairy, I have gone very low carbohydrate. Heck, I lived on olive oil and canned tuna fish for a couple of days and things still weren’t great.
With regards to what foods cause gas, I have very little flatulence on my current diet. I certainly pass a lot less gas than I would on a SAD. There were a few times that I thought I found a food trigger but I ended up being wrong. The same meal might not cause me any problems one day but problems the next.
That I don’t pass gas a lot doesn’t quite rule of fermentation, I guess that gas could be absorbed, which kind of rules out gluten issues as a cause. A breath test would be useful but again they are difficult to come by in Ireland.
Maybe it isn’t a symptom of SIBO/IBS but rather a symptom of magnesium deficiency. It isn’t possible to fully eliminate gas in the intestines so maybe the smooth muscle of the intestinal walls are cramping or otherwise not functioning properly, and when there is excessive gas the problem is worse but it still exists with low levels of gas.
I think the lack of pain pretty much rules out an obstruction issue, especially when bowel movements are fine.
What are your thoughts on treatment for IBS?
Are there any other deficiencies that could manifest in less than optimal gut function or any supplements that may be worthwhile investigating?
Thanks for your help, as you can see I am incredibly confused about all of this. The more I think about it, the more confused I become.

Fish oil calories. How can they not count? I am working at leaning out currently 247 want to get down to 200. My coach has me on 2200 cal, 1 gm protien per # bw, 75 gms carbs and 110gms fat. The whole 9 calculator has me taking 20 tsp of fish oil or 800 cal. How is it that these cal don’t count when you are trying to lean out. I know many similar questions have been asked before so sorry for being thick. Lack of EPA/DHA I guess.
