I’m reading Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar, and Survival on your recommendation from this site. I have not gotten very far, but it seems that the book already contradicts much of what crossfit does, .i e. the high intensity exercise (and 3 on 1 off). for example, on page 14 wiley writes “That’s why cortisol is up during the day-to supply glocose to muscles to fight or run away and keep you calm for decision-making processes… in this chronic state, not only are you keeping your blood sugar up, taxing your insulin response system with cortisol’s blood-sugar-mobilizing effects, you are actually become insulin-resistant as you exercise, too. This means exercise can make you fat.” I was under the impression that exercise reduced your resistance to insulin. Which is right? Also, thanks for all the great free information you constantly post. When are you going to write a book?

I really enjoyed the cert Robb. I learned a ton and immediately began using the knowledge to help others. I talked to a friend the next day and he revelaed that his tryglyceride level is at 700 (normal is 150). He’s currently filling out the food log this week and on Monday I’ll start working with him to get him back on track. This is the type of education that saves lives!!

Wholly COW!! 700 is no fracking joke! Keep me posted on how that goes!

Robb,
Can you comment on some of the wonderful tweaks on the Paleo diet that you discussed in the cert. I have not read that original book on Paleo but have been told that it limits the use of eggs to 6 a week, says no bacon and no alcohol. I am much happier with your bacon eating style, but would like to know about the shift in thinking. Is this part of the Paleo Athletes version or is it based on other research. Thanks for your input so I can sound intelligent, but also eat my bacon and drink my coffee!!
robbwolf says
Faith-
Most of the nutritional tweaks are from the article “42 Ways to skin the Zone”. The bacon dealio….it’s just part of the overall scheme here! We take our fish oil, have some olive oil…enjoy some bacon with breakfast!!

Hey Robb! Congrats with all the progress of the blog, CF Norcal, the book, your marriage, your diet, the certs, saving lives, mass gains….damn you are a busy little bee! So with that, ive got a question. I subscribed to the paleo newsletter and in a recent article they proclaimed the possible evils of milk, mainly cow’s milk, BUT while reading Good Cals/ Bad Cals Gary brings up the Polynesian atolls of Tokelau and how they lived (pre-euro invasion) “on a fish and coconut diet, more than 70% of the calories in their diet came from coconut, more than 50% came from fat and 90% was saturated.” (pg 136) so my question, How good/bad is coconut milk and if used as a fat how much is a safe dose? Trader Joes has theirs at 50% less fat than regular coconut milk. I tried including it in my fat intake and found it way more filling then 12 frackin almonds and had no noticeable negative side effects. I know you recommend it for the paleo ice cream (my new found love) and that comes out to (may be misquoting) 30xfat. Gary also says that when they natives went back to the “old ways” (post invasion) “many people lost weight and felt much better including some diabetics” (pg 137) Is this overall a potentially “healthy meal?” (Sorry for the long post, but I haven’t bothered you in a while)
Thanks for any answer,
Chris

I think Coconut is awesome…I;d ditch the TJ low fat stuff and find an asian market variety that has little to no english on the can…THIS will be good stuff!

Robb Hola..You need to be informed of the latest fitness regime that i can assure you will challenge CrossFit.
Take one 1995 1000cc BMW and have it break down about 4 or 5 miles from where you live….much flat, little downhill and much uphill and push the fecker home.
Very stressful.
I swear doing this 3 times a week and you’ll look like..well Dandy Chain and Udo DoodenSchine..little known Peruvian(of NY and German ancestry) bodybuilders and chicken wrestlers.
You have been forewarned.

My fiance and I attended your Nutrition Cert back in Nov. @ Cherry Point and we haven’t had a chance to send you an email to express our appreciation for putting on such an awesome presentation, thank you! As a side note one of our clients is competing in the “Dirty South” regional qualifier later this month and I am curious how we should manage her eating during the multiple-wod days? She is a strict Zoner (almost Paleo) – anything “helpful hints” you could send our way?? Thanks again ~ Jason

mashed sweet potatoes + apple sauce in a 2-1 ratio. A little easily digested protein…possibly whey protein mixed in the SP+ apple sauce. PLAY with it in advance! You do nbot want to crack out new stuff on game day…
