I am 73 years old and I have been on Paleo for about 4 months. My husband also. We feel great but I am concerned that I am losing too much weight. My goal was 120 but I now weigh 114. I am not starving myself for sure. Do your see this as normal with this diet? I have been at 114 for a couple of weeks so maybe this is my set point.

I’ve had a couple of older female clients lose quite a lot of weight to the point they are concerned. One of the problems is in my observation, lack of muscle mass. Paleo maximises fat loss, and when lost – the low lean mass becomes obvious. We lose approx 250 grams of muscle per year after the age of 30. Unless you make a concerted effort and do regular weight resistant exercise this happens.
I’d suggest building your muscle. Lift heavy weights, and build up you strength.

I look forward to hearing Dr. Hall’s talk when it comes out. As someone who lives in Reno I found Dr. Hall through you and your mention of Specialty Health. He(and you) have made a big difference in my life and health. Hell, just finding a doc who doesn’t treat me like a nut when I talk about paleo is great. Thanks for doing what you do.

Regarding getting paleo to the masses, there is something disturbing to me about the idea of trying to appease people who don’t believe in evolution. Should this movement (if you want to call it that) be open and welcoming to all? Absolutely. And there is ample evidence to suggest that plenty of creationists have adopted this lifestyle. (I was shocked to see a recent survey, according to which only 67% of people who eat paleo actually accept evolution!)
However, in the same sense that you can lead a horse to water, but can’t make it drink, I see little point in pushing this on people who are too far gone to accept a concept that makes even minor overt references to evolution. The fact that creationism is still alive and kicking is something that depresses and frustrates me to no end.

Shocked? Only half of you Americans know that life evolved by natural selection… it only stands to reason.

I’m curious what the standard deviation of the “ideal waist to hip ratio” of men is. That is extremely relevant to the topic, especially for women who are already so neurotic about their size. No use starving oneself if one is already within one standard deviation of the mean.
sonny says
0.7 is also correlated w estrogen levels and w fertility.
For men , ideal is 0.9

Nice podcast. But how long do I have to wait to listen to (my intellectual hero) Nassim Taleb. I read the books in the wrong order, I guess.
