CrossFit South Brooklyn was crawling with Paleo-Hooligans yesterday! I really love this area, both Hoboken and the Park Slope (South Brooklyn) areas have so much good food, coffee and cool stuff going on it makes this Cave Man’s head spin! Thank you to everyone who came out for the day. We are heading back to CFSB thsi morning to lift weights, then grab breakfast and head to Central Park!

Doh! I got cut out of the picture! I want my money back! No. Seriously I realy enjoyed the seminar and would like to thank you for a fun and overwhelmingly informative experience. Can’t wait for the book!
p.s. love your description of Chico’s aromas. I lived in Olympia WA and attended Evergreen so I found that esp funny.

A question for the podcast:
Will you talk about Saturated Fat and it’s role in the Paleo Diet? From reading The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain, I got the impression that Saturated Fat is to be avoided at all costs. Perhaps you could talk about the original The Paleo Diet — what was changed? Is he really against animal fats, or just grain-fed animal fats? What would a new edition be like?
I have gravitated toward a old-fashioned Paleo-type diet. Like my farm ancestors, I strive to use all of the animal: the excess rendered fats are great for cooking vegetables, organ meats would be very nutritious (if I could get them), and the bones make great soup. I could learn a lot from my great-grandmother, if she were still alive.
Maybe it’s just because I was a vegetarian for so long, but I am just stuffing myself with natural bacon, roast chicken with pan drippings, and fatty grass-fed steaks. I try to get a good salad in everyday for dinner. It seems to be working — my Crossfit WODs are improving and I’m not getting fatter and I’m not hungry.
Is so much saturated fat OK? Do you agree with the PaNu blog guy?
P.S. I love the podcast! Keep it up. The length works for me, I just pause it when I need to.

Robb,
Thanks again for making it to the East Coast. You put on a great seminar and are such a professional. I have one question that I didn’t ask (and probably dozens more) about EPA/DHA. There are varying amount on different brands of fish oil. Is there a certain ratio of EPA/DHA, or a minimum amount of DHA you would say is a minimal that you would want in your fish oil? Thanks.

POS-
Thanks for the kind words, I really enjoyed the weekend. Two GREAT groups of folks.
I don’t really have a max-min on this. Heavy DHA makes sense but is not mandatory unless cognitive issues are being dealt with.

NYC is very hard place to stay paleo for me. Pretty much every culture and ethnicity has a restaurant and I want to try them all 🙂

Hi, Robb.
Thanks again for a very informative seminar; I’ll be using what I learned here the next time I go to my doctor (April 20) to figure out my digestive issues.
For the questioner abover on supplements, I jotted down a lot of the recommendations. Robb, you were firm on taking Vitamin D in the morning. What would you recommend for some of these other supplements? AM, PM, empty stomach, full stomach?
Jarrow brand for probiotics (Note, Robb also said to vary the brands to get a variety of strains. Each company has their own particular strain of things like Acidolphilus.)
Natural Calm Chelated Magnesium (that’s listed in the suggested supplements on page 26 of our handout, it’s the only one with a recommended brand)
Kirkland (Costco’s brand) fish oil. (Note, I use this stuff myself. There is more than one option available there, be sure to check the ingredients and get the one where the EPA/DHA amounts are clearly stated separately, not the one where an overall number is given)
NOW foods superenzyme
Natural Palm magnesium citrate (before bed to aid sleep)
Since the seminar, I’ve gone to Whole Foods and bought the recommended supplements and am easing them into my routine. Most of the stuff I picked up was Bluebonnet brand, since that’s gluten, dairy, and soy free. The only thing I didn’t pick up was the Conjugated linoleic acid–based on the ingredient lists of several brands, it seems like this stuff is distilled from either sunflower or safflower oil, can’t remember which but it’s on my doc’s list of no-nos. Didn’t find Natural Palm or NOW superfoods, but may pick them up somewhere besides Whole Foods.
Thanks again, Robb! Any guidance on best times for taking these supplements would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to your book.
