The Paleolithic Solution – Episode 2

We officially have a title which means we got good feedback on our first episode and no one went deaf listening to Robb and I talk so here is episode 2 for your enjoyment.  We got a ton of good questions after the first episode – please keep them coming.  I also attached some show notes so you can see the questions that we are working from.

We are now on iTunes.  If you like the podcast please write a review for us on iTunes.  Note that we are listed as explicit because although I try to keep Robb in check he does swear from time to time. :)

Hey Robb — thanks again I ditched the Nordic Nats cod liver oil and bought some Nordic 3-6-9 instead.
What’s gonna be the cover illustration for the book? How about a photo of you DLing 500lbs?!?!?

Hey robb, hopefully im not to late on this one. Stoked about the podcasts, thankyou to both yourself and andy.

My question. I have been doing the costco brand intermittently for awhile now. I go for a few weeks with the .5 – 1g per 10lb BW reccomendation, and something negative in my health seems to occur at the end of that few weeks, everytime.

My main protein sources are grassfed beef and those nice and pricey free range eggs. I eat lots of green veggies with every meal and I typically cook them in olive oil. I also eat avocado regularly but also eat almond butter as frequently.

How much fish oil do I really need before I am tipping the Omega 6/Omega 3 scales in the other direction? Starting today I have switched to the nice carlsons brand after hearing the suspicious nature of costcos newer fish oil,
maybe that will make the difference.

Thanks man, love your stuff, Thomas.

    Robb,
I had a question about Vitamin D. You mentioned in this podcast that Loren recomended to you and Welbourn to take 2000-5000 IU’s a day. From what I have found in The Paleo Diet and Paleo Diet for Atheletes he recomends no more than 800 IU’s and says that anything over 2000 IU’s can be toxic. Did something change? Is this calculated on activity levels/weight? Thanks.

    Oh…ugh…

I have discovered that I cannot take liquid fish oil. It makes me feel nauseous.

I don’t know if it is because it is liquid or because of the lemon flavoring. I don’t think I will be able to eat anything lemon-flavored again….Normally I have a pretty strong stomach. I’m going back to frozen capsules. Um, word to the wise…

    Paul:
Dropping nuts and eggs cleared up my acne. I’ve experimented to see if this is true and sure enough it is. At times I have said, “what the hell,” eaten one or both of those foods for a few weeks and suffered in many ways, including in the appearance of my skin.

These have come up as food allergies for me in an IgG food allergy test, which is not something that all mainstream doctors consider…for what that’s worth. I have eliminated and reintroduced and then re-eliminated these foods two or three times in the past four years. Every time it is the same result, so I think I have the info I need. I guess “nothing tastes as good as good performance feels and clear skin looks!”

    Robb:
What’s your take on IgG-mediated food allergy? No rush in answering this, I realize it is a bit off-topic from an athletic performance-oriented blog. Thanks!

    Sarah-
It makes sense. I do think some gut irritation is at play in allergies. Even just from a collateral damage perspective. Irritate the immune system and you see worse symptoms.

I think Welbourn is going to help me on the cover art. No one wants to see my Red-Scottish-Head DL!

    Hey Robb,
Something that completely clicked with me listening to this podcast and something I had recently read (via my trainer, Erin Davidson Crossfit Center City) is the amount of fat intake. I had a problem with unknown weight gain in the last year (20 lbs in a year on Paleo foods + CF!??) but! I think it was the large increase in fats. Prior to CF I was vegetarian, so switching to meat I already was taking more in fat there (fats in meats like you were saying), plus I lived on nuts and nut butters and dark chocolate. I believe that the “too much fat” factor could be why I gained the weight (too much energy in fat as opposed to – when hungry – eating CHO and PRO) — I’m doing a trial and error where I eat 3 meals / day with at least 20g PRO per meal, 30-50g CHO and no unnecessary FAT. No excess nuts or chocolates. 2x / week eating a “cheat” meal. Following this for 30 days, I’m on day 2 – added 10,000 IU of Vitamin D into the mix and I’ll get back to you in the next 28 days as to how it goes. Thanks for the podcasts! Subscribed to it on iTunes!!!! Yay!!
Also, sorry to hear what happen, but something good comes from everything! I’m really looking forward to the book :) Happy Thanksgiving!!

    Alicia-
Yes, there are certainly situations in which higher EPA or DHA are called for. I;d say EPA for things like pain and inflammation (perhaps physical activity) DHA more for kids and the aged: neurological issues.

    Hi Robb,

Did you really say that you should not be worried about mercury in fish oil? If that’s the case, why does the “IFOS Program” list it as the first thing they check for (in their FAQ) and why do major western regulatory bodies set upper safe limits on mercury in fish oil? If there was nothing to worry about, why regulate for it?

    Ta,

    Colin
