Of the 4 billion pounds of food distributed through the Feeding America food bank network, less than 2 percent is nutrient-dense, animal-based protein and seafood makes up only a fraction of that. More than 49 million people in the US have limited access to nutrient-dense foods and for those using the food bank system, it is even more difficult to access the food they need to maintain a healthy diet.
SeaShare, a Seattle-based non-profit organization, is working to change those numbers. Over the last 20 years SeaShare has coordinated seafood donations from fishermen and the seafood industry amounting to 200 million seafood servings delivered to food banks across the United States.
Now, they are working to do more. For the month of December SeaShare is running a “Share The Sea” campaign to raise one million in seafood servings for those in need across the US. This campaign is the perfect way for people to donate to food banks in a healthy and sustainable way, instead of giving boxes of empty calories.
Feeding people is important, but feeding people well should be a priority. Through the effort of SeaShare and its partners in the seafood industry, SeaShare is able to provide eight seafood servings to a food bank for every dollar it receives. If you add yourself into that equation, imagine the impact of your donation.
