YES!! I’m loving the early morning release on the podcast guys you just made my week!
Adam Harlow says
Hey guys, not sure if you are aware but the podcasts are no longer populating in iTunes (ep 45 is the last one in iTunes)? They seemed to stop showing up after the launch of the new site. Just letting you know.
Adam Harlow says
Scratch that…It figures that as soon as I would write that, the issue would no longer exist.
Nicole says
I’m still not seeing it in iTunes. after episode 45. In fact, I just deleted the podcast subscription, searched for it and added it again…and I still only get 9/14, Episode 45 as the most recent.
Nicole says
OK, when I *re-subscribed* it came up. I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m pretty stubborn and others may be experiencing said wonkiness who may not be so stubborn. 😀
Chris says
I’m still not seeing the old podcasts. When I re-subscribed I only see episodes 38-47.
Renae says
For me, itunes created a second folder. All episodes through 45 are ni the Paleolithic solution folder and the new ones are now under the Pale solution. It did this automatically for me, maybe you could search for paleo solution, or just robb wolf and see if you can find the new ones because they are accessible via itunes.

Also, Vitamin D signaling has been shown to reduce eosinophil activation in an allergic airway disease model so getting some sun or supplementing might help in addition to the Paleo deal.

thanks mike! I ordered that immunology book. looking forward to it!
Mike D. says
Hey Robb (and Mike M.),
Thanks for the information. I have actually gone full paleo since asking the question on EE last week. I am excited to see what happens over the next 30 days. The research Mike M. posted is very eye opening. I am going to be sure to send that to my dad (who probably won’t follow it anyway).
I also, literally, just finished the book and thought it was amazing! Way to go!
Thanks again,
Mike
PS, I can see your bolus from here.

Rob and Andy –
Love the comment on the O.D.D. it seems a lot of times common sense and discipline in whatever form people utilize elude us all. I want to share one thing I have found similar to what Robb was saying if I “plan” cheat Holy Cats! thing go haywire and I feel like crap. The inadvertent cheats though, don’t derail the plan i may feel crap but i am not derailed nearly as long. Having read the Primal Blueprint I think most people skip over the part where Sisson talks about judging the 80-20 on how you feel and eventually you if you don’t plan you’ll have less and less 20’s.
Good work guys, can’t wait for my book to come from Amazon Robb.

Haven’t had the chance to listen yet, but read the show notes and found question 7 interesting as its something I dealt with in the past, not diagnosed as anything as I never saw a Dr for it, but it is extremely uncomfortable & inconvenient. I also found it to be especially bad when I was on the very-lean protein, low fat, whole grain deal. During that time I also found that bread would cause the same problem frequently. (I must say I dont miss the blandness of a turkey sandwich on whole wheat)
Been doing the paleo deal for about 1.5 years, and I almost never have an issue unless my meals are really low in fat, and I also haven’t drank anything in a while, so it rarely happens anymore.
However, I have also found that the once in a while when it does occur its usually in the same meal or right after a meal when I’ve ended up getting a gluten dose, which I also avoid as much as possible.
I can say for sure in my case paleo helped clear that up.
On a similar note I also found that some foods (mostly nuts, bananas, raw peppers & avocados) would make my mouth & throat itchy and sometimes impede swalloing if I had them in the past after eating bread, but now I have no issues eating any of them at all… and I love avocados.
Anyone else noticing a trend? 😉
Beachdog says
Mike,
Thanks for posting the question; I’m not sure what trend you are noticing but you made me realize something that I had missed.
I used to gag whenever I brushed my teeth, but that disappeared with Paleo. I hadn’t noticed it but I had it happen again this weekend. My neighbor had gotten married on the property and you can say that both axles of my wagon where dragging on the ground (Ted’s Chocolate Haupia Pie, Bubbie’s Ice cream Mochie Balls and free pouring “J cuvee 20” couldn’t be resisted). Not sure if it’s the dairy or the wheat, I will have to solve this one through experimentation as leftovers ended up in my fridge and freezer. I won’t allow it to be the “J” as the Starretts taught me champagne Fridays are good;)
Aloha

great podcast.
hitting philly this weekend.
where is this free deepfried bacon place??
Robb Wolf says
you tell me man! It was a straight shot from CF philly if I recall. I suspect google-fu might help here.

I don’t know about Philly, but Wando’s in Madison Wisconsin serves free bacon every Friday. Here’s the link http://www.wandosbar.com/ to their website.

Matt Lentzner says
Robb,
I guess now that you’re a big shot, best selling author you have no qualms about kicking Barry Sears in balls. repeatedly. Not that I’m complaining about it. Definitely deserved, well-played, and funny.
Also liked the parenting advice – spot on. These pretend parents who won’t confront their kids bother me. Maybe it won’t matter long term, but these brats are hard to take even in small doses. I’ve made my own 3yo son sit on the stairs for an hour and a half until he apologized for his bad behavior. I had to do this several times, but now at 5 he is a kid who has self control, respects me, and rarely acts up.
I get asked all the time what I did to make my kids so well behaved. When I tell people they say I’m too strict, or it would be too hard for them to do. I guess that’s how you feel when you try to sell people on a Paleo lifestyle.
Robb Wolf says
Matt-
You know…It’s really not Barry Sears that I have an axe to grind, it’s that he was held up as the end all be all by CF HQ. That and when Glassman said Cordain and I were “pseudo-scientists”. That pissed me off! It was a bunch of silly squabbling that has painted them squarely in the corner of having no viable nutrition education program. Well, except for me whom they fired, but somehow still service all their folks.
Weird.
Matt Lentzner says
Robb,
I understand your frustration. You’ve been very professional about the whole thing. I was waiting for when you would let off some steam. Anyway, you’ve got some serious Obi-wan mojo going now.
“You can’t win, Glassman. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.”
I seems pretty apparent to me that CF HQ is becoming a bit player in their own movement.
Robb Wolf says
indeed. Many people are being helped so I guess that’s the most important piece.
julianne says
I’m know I’m just one of thousands you’ve made a difference to by promoting paleo food choices, but I am so grateful you were part of CrossFit 18 months ago when I took on being a CrossFit Nutrition coach. If you as a XFit nutrition teacher had only been pushing Zone, I would never have had the big health improvements only possible with Paleo food choices. I’m SO SO grateful you were pushing the Paleo barrel. Despite the fact Zone eating made an amazing difference when I took it on 15 years ago, I’m annoyed that Sears didn’t appreciate the significance of paleo choices – surely – I ask myself, he must see the research and know the difference it could potentially make for people. I feel really let down in retrospect, and as a result feel I’ve made less difference in the last 10 years with clients than was possible. It is just so rewarding seeing the difference paleo choices makes. The daily feedback from people I see just buzzes me out. Given how many people you – Robb, make a difference to you must feel like you are popping out of your skin most of the time!
And your book – it’s fantastic, just arrived yesterday, my husband promptly stole it and has been relaying Robb facts to me.
Robb Wolf says
Julianne-
You are very kind. I would not sweat it too much. We are fortunate for what Sears brought to the table, perhaps MUCH more fortunate for what Cordain, Eaton and the rest have provided. What was so damndably frustrating before when I worked for CrossFit was I knew CF+ paleo was literally SAVING lives. Noe of the leadership cared. It was all about control. A year later they have no nutrition program, paleo has grown exponentially…but fewer people are as well as they could be, fewer people are as fit as they could be if they had just let me do what I love doing: Help people and tinker.
I really hope some of the changes afoot in crossfit provide some balance and that they cease spinning off talent like a 3rd world country.
Daniel says
Hey Guys,
Its Daniel from question 2. I did send you the extra info you were wondering about but it was about 45 minutes later in a second submission. Regardless I appreciate the time and attention to my question. I’ve learn so much and have improved greatly. Im striving to reach that A1c below 5 and with time and more applied knowledge, know I’ll get there. Once again THANK YOU. Just ordered the book can’t wait.
Robb Wolf says
Sorry Daniel. The email load is in the 3-4k/day…it;s an avalanche. That second one got lost apparently.

re Hashimotos, my thyroid results are finally improving, not adding iodine and strict gluten free (Also AI paleo, fish oil, vit D, selenium)
TG antibodies down from 655 to 196
TPO antibodies down from 1622 to 1274
TSH went up to 13 on iodine (May 2010) now back to 4.3
Free T4 & T3 lower end of normal. No hypothyroid symptoms. No meds.
Will keep experimenting and see if I can get further improvements.
Jessica says
Right-on with your statement that kids need boundaries…I’m not a parent (yet), but I am rather observant and couldn’t agree more!
Adam says
Hey Robb,
A patient of mine is doing the “Cenegenix” diet. I’ve contacted them and am now being spammed with their “information” which doesn’t divulge much of anything about their program other than the fact that HGH will help you heal/recover/get jacked much faster than not taking HGH.
Have you heard of this place/program? What are your thoughts on affecting HGH directly (i.e. with injections) or indirectly (i.e. with diet and exercise). Can the hard work method achieve the same effects/levels that the injections can? And can we reverse engineer the whole mess, reversing disease, etc. that causes low HGH by replacing it with injections? Can we make the chicken get back inside the egg?
Halfway through and loving the book… you do seem oddly interested in how my fanny will look in a bikini though.
Cheers,
Adam

There may be a legit place for bio-identical hormone replacement. Will be investigating this in future blog posts.

If I exclude the cheese from my burger can I have 7 fries instead of 5? I know how important it is to keep the proper ratio of carbs, proteins, fats and want to make sure I’m not violating some universal law.

This is the same guy who swore to congress that he did not get a blow-job from Monica. Not that I think who is sleeping with who should be a matter of public discussion…but…
Matt Lentzner says
Yeah, and he’s already had a quintuple bypass operation as well which proves he’s not the paragon of health and also that he’s an alien with one extra coronary artery.
Send that copy to Obama. He’s the healthcare guy. How about we figure out how to keep people from getting sick in the first place instead of how to ration out our invasive, band aid oriented, treat the symptoms, medical system.
(Whew, feeling ranty this evening)
Xtremum says
Hi Robb,
Felt compelled to give some love after this podcast. Specifically, the ODD disgnosed kid question. In case you get any negatives for that I wanted to agree with you. Incidentally, this is what I do for a living…work with kids with these diagnoses and others; going in their homes to help the parents. A lot of the time this is really about teaching the parents how to hold their kids accountable.
It’s also interesting about the diet piece, which I belive does have a place in helping children. Frequently upon meeting children with behavior problems/diagnosis I am struck by how unhealthy they look and/or the poor food they are fed by caregivers. I would really like to address it sometimes, but its pretty much outside what’s allowed/acceptable/best practice. How sad is that?

hahahhaah all i got is….5 fries
Nick Cruz says
I nearly jumped out of my seat when I heard the symptoms of the guy who had or has Eosinophilic Esophagitis. That describes what happens to me exactly! It is usually chicken that causes it for me, but I suspect that it is usually when I eat dry meat. I have to be REALLY careful or it gets completely stuck. At its worst it took me almost an hour to clear the food lodged in my throat. I couldnt get it to go up or down. I would slam a bunch of water to try and get it to pass but then I would just throw up the water and the food would still be stuck. It was SUPER scary. I cant say that going paleo made it go away, it has happened since going paleo, but Im very careful to make sure I always let my food go all the way down before eating another bite. I think just being aware of the condition and not eating too fast has helped me avoid the issue. Since I can still get these symptoms despite being on a paleo + dairy diet would that tend to point to an actual physical issue in my esophagus? Id rather just use precautions rather than having to get my throat ballooned. That sounds horrid!
Thanks, I now have something new to research about myself!
Nick

Interesting newspaper article on the possible effect of a new trans fat in milk fat when cows are fed Palm Kernel Expeller as a supplemental feed. Very common in New Zealand when there is not enough grass due to drought, up to a third of feed can be comprised of PKE.
It is linked with poly-vascular disease and stroke in susceptible people
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10677503
The trans fat is Palmitelaidic acid

Robb!
Noticed no zinc recommendation in the Paleo Solution. Obviously the booked is geared towards the sedentary individual. Is a good Zinc Chelate still a solid recommendation for hard training folks? 30-50mg?
Robb Wolf says

sure, just covered the stuff “everybody” needs.
Isaac Johnson says
Hi Robb,
Congrat’s on the new book, I can’t wait to receive my copy. For question#10-the guy with one kidney, was the recommendation on the low side of the protein equation .5g to .75g per lb of bodyweight (say 180lbs), or per lb of LEAN mass, ie. 180 lbs – 10% bodyfat=162lbs. Also, if someone had 2 kidneys you mentioned you wouldn’t be as concerned with protein intake, but was that with the assumption of 2 healthy kidneys, or if he was slightly impaired in kidney function but still had 2? Lastly, if he kept to a low carb diet, kept to the lower protein scale mentioned, would an excess of calories in fat for bulking still not be recommended for health, performance, and LONGEVITY? Just wasn’t sure if the excess calories are a strain on the kidney’s or the extra protein and carbs.
Thanks for answering! I have learned a lot listening to all of the podcasts, and appreciate all your efforts (unlike on Tnation-Holy Cats! that was embarrassing). Keep up the good work, I wish you tons of continued success.

You packed a lot of questions in there amigo!
My main concern is the total protein load given 1 kidney. If we had dysfunction in 2 kidneys, I;d make the same recommendation. Total calorie load is ALSO a problem, hence my recommendation to run skinny on cals and protein. You can be plenty strong and jacked on this…plus live a long life with 1 kidney IMO.

Thank you for the response Robb! I first got started on Paleo after hearing about your improvement with UC. You’ve helped me a ton, thank you!

AMEN BROTHER!!!!!! I just listened to your response to the ODD question and I had to pull off the fwy to write this. These parents who don’t set boundaries and discipline their children do not realize the long term effects of their inadequate parenting: mal-adjusted kids that grow up to be mal-adjusted adults with no tools to appropriately deal with adult realities. These are essential tools that kids learn through discipline.
I am so proud of you! Love the book! Keep up the great work!
Jessica says
I realize this is old already, but I thought Lori may want to share this link with her husband – it kinda puts the whole Omega 6 issue with meat into perspective. As Kurt Harris would say, “It is better to eat potatoes, corn and white rice than vegetable oil.” 🙂

Heather says
I’m really torn on your advice about parenting. I mean, you’re not a parent, right? I’m all about structure and boundaries with my daughter, and agree that some parents fall down in that category significantly and do lifetime damage to their kids. But this dude wasn’t asking you to critique his parenting style. Your comment was in poor taste and seemed to take aim at the guy. He’s obviously a fan and wanted advice on nutrition and behavior, not how to parent. While I believe you have tons of credibility and objectivity on nutrition/science, you have zero on parenting because you haven’t been there. It’s so easy to armchair quarterback — I know I did before I was a parent; I was all judgy about how friends were parenting. Things look different when you’re actually on the other side. Much, Much different.
Also, quit saying fanny. It gives me the willies. And I liked the earlier podcasts with more cussing. 🙂
