Rob,
Thanks for the podcast. My wife is 27 weeks and has been supplementing with a Prenatal Multi which contains Folic Acid and a Folic Acid supplement on top of that as well (she also takes DHA fish oil, vit D3, and magnesium). You guys said a lot of scary stuff about Folic Acid supplementation but didn’t really offer a solution. You mentioned tetrahydrate folae, but I don’t believe such supplement exists. I am going to ask my wife to stop taking the additional Folic Acid supplement for now, but probably continue with the multi. BTW, she basically eats a standard american diet minus the vegetable oils and heavy fructose intake (she eats breads, cereals, dairy… as well as paleo foods (meat, veggies, fruit) when we cook together).
Thanks.

Very off topic and I dont know if anyone has seen this, but the Paleo Diet was ranked the worst effective diet for long term weight loss in this yahoo article: http://health.yahoo.net/articles/weight-loss/best-weight-loss-diets
Be sure to click the link and see how they broke down the Paleo diet, saying things like not enough research, dont know if it cures certain diseases (I guess they didnt read your last post Coach). I couldnt find a comments section unfortunately. Just thought this as interesting.
Im glad, not everyone should follow the road to optimal health. Eventually it will lead to shorter lines and Disneyland and more parking spaces and jobs when these people become less healthy than we. THEN we take over…

Coach Wolf (and anyone else who may know),
I have a strange situation with a clients sister who is claiming of problems post, tough*, workouts where she says her arms swell to a large, puffy, immovable size.
PostWod arms are super painful, immediately. 1.5 days later the pain is at its worst to the point where she cant even brush hair. It takes about 4 days for symptoms to subside, skin stretches as well.
Benadryll seems to help.
I asked if she drinks, especically before or post wod she said no and no changes in color of urine which both answers made me scratch rhabdo off the list.
Maybe its SDDOMS (Second day delayed onset muscle soreness) with a good pump?
Whats youre take coach?
Thank you!

Sounds kinda like compartmental syndrome…maybe she needs more of a ramp-up?

Hi, I purchased the Healthy Baby Code prior to Chris being on your podcast! Does that mean I am eligible for the exclusive seminar??? I hope so! If so, how do I find out? If not, I’d be kinda disappointed. 🙁
Robb Wolf says
Talk to chris on that one!

Thank you to Robb, Greg and Chris for this podcast. Last night, my husband and I purchased the Healthy Baby Code after listening. We’re both 33 and have been trying to conceive for about 4 months or so. This will be amazing information for right now, when we do get pregnant and in the future.
One quick question- Should I stop the Fish Oil I’m taking and supplement with the fermented Cod Liver Oil, or take both? Thanks so much for all of your hard work!
Robb Wolf says
I’d just do the CLO. Keep us posted!!
Alex says
Robb,
What are your thoughts on those who say that folic acid can actually block L-methylfolate from crossing the blood brain barrier? Thanks!
Robb Wolf says
I’m not familiar with that specifically, but am familiar with the problems of folic acid vs folate.

Hey Robb & Greg,
Thanks for the awesome podcast. Really good to hear Chris’ take on Paleo and pregnancy. I just shared it with my wife as we are going down the pregnancy path soon. We are so thankful for the high quality information.
I just noticed that after I downloaded this podcast to my Windows 7 computer, the file properties (author, title, etc) are a little odd. It shows the Artist is “Greg Everett” and it’s “Greg Everett’s Album”. What’s going on? Is Greg trying to jack the podcast?
I’m sure Greg isn’t trying to take all the credit (grin). You might want you to fix this up for future casts. Depending on the software you are using, the Artist info or “ID3 Tag” info should do the trick.
Keep up the good work. You guys rock.

hey, awesome work and congratulations to Chris and his wife on their baby!
I have a 17 year old and a 12 year old. We did the whole deal – home birth, in water, extended breastfeeding, family bed, penises not cut, not vaccinated, homeschooled etc. We did opt for vitamin K at birth, but they had only breast for the first year.
Don’t worry about that…it feels wrong, but if you do the babyled thing, it’s all good. People thought I was insane… I learned not to tell folks that my kids just played with food when I gave it to them and preferred breastmilk. They thrived too.
Extended breastfeeding and family bed were the best choices ever. Don’t worry, they wean. They go to their own beds. Over time, I learned not to tell a lot of people, a lot of stuff. 😉
My kids jokingly refer to their early childhoods as growing up “on the Calm Rivers Commune where nothing including sugar or TV can hurt you.”
Ungrateful jerks. 😉
You can go all natural with your kids, but be warned, they may turn out to be total smart a**es anyway.
I can’t tell you how grateful and relieved I am to be on the “other side” of childhood. Nobody can criticize me for *&^T now, (hmph) once your kids turn out not only OK, (despite the calm river commune) but really truly awesome, it’s so freakin vindicating, I can’t even tell you! 😉
Thanks to wonderful practitioners like Robb and Chris – my midwives and the ND and chiropractor they referred me to – I got to make different choices for my kids. It’s been amazing.
Mine make fun of what they think of as their hippified-upbringing, and they tease the hell out of their old mom hauling out research and pub med for every decision or argument…but, it’s made all the difference over 17 years. I’m so grateful.
Thank you both – so much. The difference you make in the lives of kids whose parents opt-in for this stuff, will be exponential.
🙂
PS: When I was first pregnant, I was thinking that breastfeeding beyond 3 months was sort of unnecessary and well, a little disgusting. My midwife had had three children and nursed them all. She laughed when I told her my thoughts on nursing past the first few months and said – “oh don’t ask me how long I nursed my last one!”
Of course I asked and she told me he was 4 1/2 years old when he quit nursing. I was flabbergasted! Was that even legal?
But, then she told me that when her second child was dying from leukemia at age three, she nursed her through it.
Good long-term health outcomes for our kids are always a goal, and an important one in discussing breastfeeding, for how long, etc. But sometimes, the choices we make are just for today, just for this moment. Her telling me about that reminded me of that with my own kids.
I nursed mine until they decided to stop (around 5 for both) and I thank my wonderful midwife for that, for all those years, for all that peace in real time that made my life, and the lives of my kids, so much better.
I can say that extended, child-led nursing will help more than you know – which is good to keep in mind when you go through all the hell of the early days of breastfeeding.
But, it won’t stop your kids from banning you from talking about it EVER in their presence. (Ever.)
And, if you let (make) them lift weights as teens, they will lift you up and shake you around until you either throw up or stop talking about how they nursed them until they were nearly 5.
😀

Dman: you can get that supplement, I have one called “optimized folate” which is l-methylfolate (as 5-Methyltetrahydrofolic acid). Would be interested to hear Robb’s or Chris’ thoughts on that supplement.

Robb, Greg & Chris many thanks for the pod lots of information my gf & plan to use for our next try to have our first child. Sadly we lost our first one as a still born at the 19th week when we went for an ultrasound to determine if baby was boy or girl. Doctors gave us a one page report with the following:
There is a solitary intrauterine fetus. No fetal cardiac or fetal movement is demonstrated. Oligohydramnios present, fetal head shape abnormal with some overlapping of skull bones. The average ultrasound age is approximately 14.5 weeks. Placenta was posterior & clear of the internal cervical os. Multiple uterine fibroids where present, no retroplacental haemorrhage. Conclusion: The appearances are consistent with fetal demise.
Doctors & myself are stumped that the fetus based on above measurements was put at 14.5 weeks (did not list measurements taken in ultrasounds in the above), we felt baby kick in the 18th week for the first time on top of that we heard the heart beating at 16th week. Autopsy has been requested have been told they might find no cause, still waiting for autopsy findings. Based on this is there any suggestions you can offer so when we try again we improve our chances of getting a healthy live born baby? Many thanks for your terrific work to the three of you.

You guys should make a youtube channel with all of the audio files. I can’t download or listen to them on my DoD computer (but I can get on youtube!), and I need something to listen to and learn from while I teach microsoft office who’s boss….
Thanks,

Thank the Grammar Nazi for me. It reassures me to know I’m probably not the only one that becomes irrationally angry when I see grammar being slaughtered on roadside billboards… or when I see gas stations that advertise “ATM Machine inside.”

Hi there,
I am 30 y.o., just started the whole “trying to get pregnant” thing, who eats very healthy (at least 95% paleo). I currently supplement with CLO but am wondering if I should add a multivitamin (w/o A and D) into my regiment? I have not discussed this with a physician yet, mostly because I know the lecture about prenatal vitamins that I will receive. Do you feel an added multivitamin will be beneficial and if so, is there a certain brand that is recommended?
Thanks for all the wonderful information you share!
