John Welbourn had a post a few days ago with his pick for the Best Fight Scene Ever. Now, John’s pick is righteous to be sure, but I have what is in my opinion the BEST fight scene ever. It’s from Grose Point Blank (possibly the best movie ever, but that’s a topic for another day) and it’s between John Cusack and Benny “The Jet” Urquidez.
Andy Deas says
A wise choice – I couldn’t agree more!
“You can never go home again, Oatman… but I guess you can shop there.”
Robbie says
Benny’s high kick, leg sweep combo is pretty nasty. Until JC leg locks his head…game over!!! Nice post.
Kevin says
Not bad but I have a hard time taking any fight scene with John Cusack seriously; even if the Jet is in it. Pretty much any fight scene with Tony Jaa is incredible. Here is one of my favorites though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9Vw0a6lLxM&feature=fvw
This a compilation of a lot of his moves.

Kevin-
Cusack has a legit kick-boxing background! Don;t hate!

lol whoa! not the ending I expected, joe pesci style. Have you seen the steam room fight scene in Eastern Promises? That’s gotta be the best I’ve ever seen.

I’m going to have to go with the bathroom fight in Bourne Ultimatum: http://www.hulu.com/watch/30089/the-bourne-ultimatum-bathroom-fight#s-p1-so-i0

Saul-
that;s up there, forgot about that one.

My favorite movie of all time; and what a soundtrack for the scene. Perfect.
Waitress: What do you want in your omelette, sir?
Marty: Nothing in the omelette, nothing at all.
Waitress: Well, that’s not technically an omelette.
Marty: Look, I don’t want to get into a semantic argument, I just want the protein.
robbwolf says
Adam-
Possibly the best SCENE int he movie. The “Nada Omelette!”
Darren says
Nice one Robb, but I vote for another scene Benny did with Jackie Chan. It’s a little long, but absolutely brilliant.

PS: And now the The Swayze has passed, I gotta give some props to every fight scene in Roadhouse……

Love that fight scene. Great pic. and choice.
Bart Gill says
Best fight scene ever has to be the hammer scene from Oldboy.
One man with a hammer vs. 25 thug in a tight corridor. Epic.

Bart-
I like it, but I like the GPB scene because of the “reality”. Standing, to clinch, to ground to Pen!
Michael Campi says
The best ever is a toss up between the opening of Wild at Heart where Nicolas Cage beats a guy to death or the cafe scene at he beginning of Natural Born Killers.
damaged justice says
GPB ain’t bad, but the Wheels on Meals fight blows it away. The Benny-Jackie Chan one in Dragons Forever is almost as good, but Wheels on Meals takes it by an inch. And whoever voted for Bourne Ultimatum, may I just quote Mr. Cranky: “What is with Hollywood’s direction of martial arts? It has all the appeal of having your prostate surgery done by an epileptic. How did they come up with the idea that shaking the camera made the martial arts better? It’s like suggesting that sex would be better if the participants were on fire.”
Tom says
Great movie – one of my all time favorites. Keep the good stuff coming, Robb.
Craig says
Funny,
My flatmate watched this for the first time yesterday. I came in just at this point. For me, this is a top five movie.
When I first saw it, I was STUNNED to see Benny The Jet walking up the street. Stunned. As a long time old school Hong Kong cinema fan, I loved his battles with Jackie Chan, plus his super legit crazy-assed fight history. Wins by KO with a BACK KICK? To the opponents PELVIS? Oof.
Definitely check out Dragons Forever, Police Story, Project A and Wheels on Meals from some brilliantly choreographed battles. I rate most old Jackie Chan / Yuen Bio / Sammo Hung flicks higher than anything made in recent years by miles. Word is that Benny was Cusack’s trainer for years – hence the role in GPB.
Love the film.
“You alright?”
“No I’m not alright. I’m hurt, pissed, gotta find a new job.”

Craig-
Spot on with the vintage Jackie chan. Armor of God was a goodie too.

Holy Shit – I thought I was the only person who’d seen ~(and loved) that film (may just be a UK problem!). Love that fight – great soundtrack…

Robb,
You’re right I gotta give Cusack some props because he did bring kickboxing out before it was cool in Say Anything. “Kickboxing, It’s the sport of the future.”
The final knife fight scene from The Hunted is quality also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCMJemdNNjk
Kevin
BTW- I am a huge fan of the early Sammo Hung, Yeun Biao and Jackie Chan flicks. The ladder fight scene at the end of Once Upon a Time in China I was revolutionary for the time.
Q says
Damn, Mike C beat me to the Say Anything reference. Cusack is the man.
Still, can’t believe no one posted this one yet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxkr4wS7XqY
No words could ever do it justice.

Q-
I think I just lost some of my soul watching that…
Adam K says
GPB was a great movie, and yes, that scene rocked. (As did the omelette scene.)
I’m gonna have to go w/ SaulJ, though, and the Bourne movies (did he just school the other guy with a book? Oh yes. He did.). You can pick just about any fight from any of the three and have a winner.

EXCELLENT choice. Kirk vs the Gorgon.

I’m with you, Robb. When Stingray died, I think a part of me died, too.
Jim Climer says
I thought I was the only soul on earth that appreciated the intensity and reality of this fight scene. I think it stands out in stark contrast to the realative lameness of the rest of the film, IMHO.
I grew up in the Grosse Pointe area and was disappointed by the flick, but always remember the fight. Charles Bronson’s fights in the movie “Hard Times” are memorable as well.
robbwolf says
Jim-
I thought the movie was genius…but there is no accounting for taste!
