Hey Robb! About 7 or 8 podcasts ago you mentioned that its rare for someone with an autoimmune disease to get cancer. My counsin was just diagnosed with lung cancer on Friday(she doesnt smoke). About a year ago she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and her mom (my aunt) died from lupus 2 years earlier. I know that fibromyalgia and lupus are commonly misdiagnosed for each other, but whats up with having an autoimmune disease AND cancer???

By definition, individuals who make it into the special forces are outliers. Whatever training regime they follow, there is no guarantee that it would be of any value for ‘normal’ people. In fact, chances are that their training and diet are suboptimal, and the extraordinary results are mostly due to their genetics.

Exactly. SEALs are found, not made. Holding a log over your head doesn’t make you a SEAL; you were a SEAL or you weren’t a SEAL before you stepped on to the beach. The same logic can be applied to elite athletes. Often times they succeed despite their training — so don’t emulate Michael Phelps (his training and diet) thinking that will make you an Olympic swimmer. He is an anomaly — born to swim.

I have listened all your podcasts. But an interview with a guy that glorifies the invasion of other countries and killing IS REALLY MY THING. “See you” next week.

You’re dissing the wrong party here – SEALS (or any other military types, be they special forces or the guys who clean latrines) don’t make policy, they serve where they’re sent, to the very best of their ability.

If you’re referring to the amoral, money-and-power-driven assholes in government who DO make the policy then I’m with you.

Exactly. virtually every SEAL I talked too supports Ron Paul and are nto generally stoked with how we roll out or foreign policy. But they took an oath that precludes letting personal feeling interfere with orders. So, AJ, you can definitely go pound sand.

You totally missed the way I turned around the Marcio Silva FB comment above.
Hell, I even put the rewording in caps.
Re-read what I wrote and see I was making fun of him and in no way was dissing the Seal Community.

I am not too fond of us foreign policy, but I greatly admire those who make the greatest sacrifices when called by their country to do so.
Can’t wait for ” I am america and so can you!”

Not related to this podcast but what do you think about something like this for S.A.D. or similar light-related troubles: http://www.hammacher.com/Product/79382?cm_cat=ProductSEM&cm_pla=AdWordsPLA&source=PRODSEM

I was also pondering the efficacy of putting something like this next to my bed and putting it on a timer so that I didn’t awake to a siren but the more natural effect of light.

I block out light from outside as my bedroom window has a couple of mega streetlights nearby and I would never get good quality sleep without fully blocking out that light but I’ve found that when I used to sleep next to an open window, despite some additional light overnight, that I woke up to the sunrise effortlessly and had good energy in the morning; conversely with the windows blacked out I sleep a hour or so into daylight and I am still groggy until I get some coffee in me and some sun exposure for about 30 minutes.

I lift in the morning before breakfast and I would like to already be ramped up by the time I hit the weights.

So blacked-out I do definitely get better sleep quality and am not tired any time during the day but it does take me more time to feel motivated and energetic with the delayed sun exposure. Is it asking too much to want to the best of both worlds?

Great episode, thanks guys. I don’t plan on trying to be a Seal but I do need a “mentor” as was mentioned. Good stuff, nice change of pace.

What an amazing man. I almost turned it off since I’m not that “into” Seal training–though my husband stays up late and kills my “completely dark room” with his headlamp while he reads those kind of military books and would love this dude. However, I am slightly offended at the two Kansas stabs/comments. As I was pulling off my 100% Kansas grass fed beef jerky from the dehydrator sheets, which by the way had been seasoned with a recipe I pulled from Robb’s recipes (Maple Sage Beef Jerky–fantastic recipe!), I heard Mark Divine joke about what Kansans eat. Well, once we make it through the wheat, soybeans, and feed lot cattle with our heads up, then we find an amazing amount of farmers who DO care about local, non processed, REAL food. Thankfully yesterday (4th of July) was spent at our mid-week Farmer’s Market where my kids and I found many great items…beets, zucchini, blackberries, melons, raw cheese, grass fed beef, pastured eggs, etc. Just because we have a lot of wheat doesn’t mean we all eat junk food. Does everyone in Reno hit the slot machines when they walk into 7-11 to pay for their gas? Probably not. Thanks for letting Mark bless us with his incredible stories. Much different than the other podcasts, but I greatly appreciate the change.

This is totally unrelated to this podcast, but I have to get it off my chest. I’m a culinary student and I just started my first nutrition course. As I was reading the first couple chapters I found myself screaming at my textbook because it was glorifying the “health benefits” of grains, especially whole grains. It also mentioned how “health professionals” have seen improvement in people who switch from a high fat diet to a high grain based diet, but failed to add any references. As a former bioengineering student who studied biochemistry, I totally understand the science as to why paleo works, but I wanna smack these book writers with knowledge and science. How can they hawk such awful information and claim to be helping people?! There have been so many cases where paleo diets have helped people reverse otherwise insurmountable diseases…I just don’t understand how such “educated” people can be so dimwitted and abhor the simple solution.

Love your podcasts and blog, btw. As much as I try to convince other people that paleo is the way (and not like a cult) they always seem to find their way back to taco bell. Smh. Keep up the good work.
