Servings: 15-20
Ingredients: 1.75 liters red wine (the big bottle)
1 cup Brandy
1 cup Triple Sec
½ -1 cup simple syrup
1 cup Simply Lemonade (or Simply Limeade–I think the lemonade is better)
diced apples
club soda
Instructions: 1. Read the “What you need to know” section before making sangria.
2. Make simple syrup by heating equal parts of sugar and water until sugar is completely dissolved. Let cool before adding to sangria mix.
3. In a glass vessel (do not use plastic), combine the wine, brandy, triple sec, simple syrup, Simply Lemonade and diced apples.
4. Let sit for 24 hours (no need for refrigeration as there’s enough alcohol to kill off any semblance of bacteria!)
5. Serve with a splash of club soda (more or less depending on your taste).
Notes: What you need to know before making the World’s Best Sangria…
1. This is the world’s best sangria and I am not ashamed to say it. Having traveled to the four corners of the earth just to taste sangria (not true, but I have had it in Spain), and after having spent a number of years of my life tinkering with different recipes, I am now a self-professed sangria connoisseur and can produce the world’s most delicious sangria.
2. This is not for everyday consumption, or even weekly consumption, and probably not even for monthly consumption as it contains a fair amount of sugar. Quarterly consumption is probably acceptable though!
3. Always make sangria in a glass vessel. In addition to the potential of plastic to leach toxins into your sangria, it will end up tasting like plastic.
4. You MUST make this the day before your event (even if your event is just you wanting some sangria) as it needs a good 24 hours (give or take a few) for all the flavors to appropriately develop. You can drink it sooner if you’re in a pinch, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s too strong and it needs time to mellow out.
5. DO NOT ADD any citrus to the mix. I know. I know. You always see sangria with citrus. But it is important to know that the pith (white part) of citrus is very bitter and will thus cause your sangria to be bitter–no bueno! I learned this the hard way. So heed my expert advice. If you think limes and lemons would add to the aesthetic of your sangria, you can just add them to the glass upon serving. Apples, however, are sangria’s best friend. They taste especially good after having soaked in the sangria for 24 hours!
6. Don’t add the club soda to the mix. Rather, add it to each glass before you serve it. You can drink it without club soda, but be warned that it’s pretty strong stuff.
7. This recipe can be doubled, tripled, quadrupled, etc. (you get the point) It’s a ratio of 1 big bottle of wine to 1 cup of brandy, triple sec & lemonade.
