Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of posts. I’m earlobe deep in book editing and not very damn good at multi-tasking. We are making good progress, the feedback from the book big-wigs is very positive with the exception they hated our initial attempts at a cover. Looks like it will be sweet and simple, not much paleo imagery. I guess we will save that for the new website. Sorry also for this grab-bag post, normally I’d like to make each of these topics a separate piece, but that’s just not going to happen.
John Durant
Not only were the Hoboken/Broklyn PSS seminars awesome, I also got to meet John Durant. You might remember John from this NY Times piece on the Paleo concept in NY. If you ever get a chance to ask John how the style piece came about it’s awesome! This initial piece led to John going on Colbert which lead to Paleo Vs. Vegan shenanigans. VEGAN=EPIC Fail.
The cool thing about John, aside from the fact he looks like a cave-man is his keen intellect. John is a thinker and an innovator and he is at the heart of this Paleo/Primal movement. What he is bringing to the forefront is not the “diet” element of this scene, although he is well versed in the exercise and nutritional underpinning of this stuff. John is a leader in the social aspects of this emergent life-way. Since the 1960’s if you talked about sustainability, health or social conscience the only alternative to the mainstream was vegetarianism. As books like the Vegetarian Myth have illustrated, this is a failed ideology that attempts to remove us from our place in nature. John has many ideas on these topics which I’m really looking forward to. Here is a photo of John eating a “Bottle Rocket” in Brooklyn. I think this was bacon wrapped around lamb. Mineral water to wash it down. Those were DAMN yummy!
MovNat/Erwan Le Corre
After meeting John Durant he put me in contact with MovNat founder Erwan Le Corre. I’ve only been able to email Erwan a few times but I’m looking forward to attending his seminars. Erwan is another person who is taking this Paleo/Primal concept beyond “just” the health and exercise considerations. Erwan reminds me of Ido in his ability to both synthesize and create. I’m very excited to learn more from him.
Interviews!
I’ll be on Jimmy Mores “Living La Vida Low Carb” on Friday, May 14 and I’ll be on the Rockstar Triathlete Wed May 12. I’ll get links to these shows as soon as I receive them.

Good things happening! I’m very happy for you, with the new avenues and opportunities opening up for you. Here’s to an expanded, broadened impact you can have.

Very cool Robb, I’ll be attending one of the MovNat seminars in West Virginia this summer, so maybe we’ll meet up!
Jason says
for those interested, the book is currently listed as being available for pre-order on amazon

Robb,
Further to your mention of the mere taste of carbohydrates having an effect on people, researchers at my alma mater have combined serious research and bicep curls in a single study:

Thanks Jason. Just pre-ordered mine.

Does anyone remember what the recommended iodine supplementation for someone who may have a thyroid disorder?
Robb Wolf says
Ryan-
RDA for iodine is 150 mcg but I do not know that this is “recommended” for thyroid issues, especially hyperthyroid.

I want to MovNat. I am down for it. Lets get our MovNat on Robbie!
Robb Wolf says
Hells yes Johnnie!!!
Christina says
Not only is he a caveman but he rocks the Vibrams! Two thumbs up for this guy!
Sean says
Robb,
Good luck with the upcoming interviews. I was part of the Rockstar Triathletes for a little while. I am interested to see how these vegans/neolithic food activists react to the caveman approach. Every once in a while you may want to ask if everyone is still listening since anything but high carb/ low fat is considered taboo in the endurance world.
Good Luck, at least I will be listening!

Hey Robb, I run a MovNat-inspired box gym in Toronto and will be hosting Erwan for a seminar event in September… next time you’re in the great white north you should come check StrengthBox out!
Robb Wolf says
Liz-
that is a done deal! Thank you for the invite!
Greg Carver says
Erwan is the real deal. I love the way he’s always adding context to his training; thinking about how our hunter-gatherer ancestors would have moved in nature…

Does anyone know how to view the John Durant vs Vegan video in Canada? It keeps telling me that in Canada it’s available on The Comedy Network only but it’s not on the Comedy Network site.
Jay says
Hey Robb,
Been reading Staffan Lindebergs book “Food and Western Disease” and he creates a pretty solid argument for avoiding saturated fat and high fat consumption in general, not specifically for heart attak per se, but for things like insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, and lipotoxicity. He lists a lot of studies that support his recommendations to consume lean meats due to sat’d fat and avoid oils to decrease overall fat consumption.
I like to use 1 tbsp of olive oil for salads which I usually have 2-3 times a day and use a tablespoon of coconut oil to cook again 2-3 times a day. So say 3 tbsp of Coconut oil (sat’d fat) and 3 tbsp of olive oil (monos) is this too much fat?
Last question, I genrally eat lean cuts of beef for the majority of my meat, but I also love bacon. I only eat pastured bacon…is there less sat’d fat in pastured bacon like in pastured beef? I don’t think I can give up bacon so if I eat bacon at least once a day, is that, with the daily oil, too much fat? sat’d and total?
Robb Wolf says
Jay-
Good one for the podcast.

Got the book preordered! Yay Robb

H-g’s least the ones i’ve seen are lazy buggers by disposition.(the !San)
This whole running thing is gibberish from my experience..they walk a lot of the time but running def not.
So i think Movnat’s emphasis on this is out of context.
I’m also a bit bemused why folks would spend hard earned cashy for a seminar about this stuff ?
Why not go ootside and pick up rocks, climb trees etc etc
Am sure all manner of rationales might come fwd hither but you have an outside so get a tadge creative
Robb Wolf says
Orphelia-
Well, I’m likely attending on the the Expansion Courses. The running will certainly take me out of my comfort zone.

Hey Robb,
I recently got a blood test back that showed some pretty shocking cholesterol numbers, despite me being a crossfitter for 3 years, 24 years old, paleo + milk and 6’1″ 185lbs. My total cholesterol was 353, HDL 48, LDL 297, Triglycerides 160. Clearly diet/exercise aren’t doing a lot for me. If it was just “high” I wouldn’t be that concerned given that I have no other CVD risk factors, but 353 is epic… planning on getting a c-reactive protein and LDL particle test. Any advice or thoughts on a situation like this? Thanks!
Robb Wolf says
Dave-
Welbourn just had his number run. He has dropped dairy of all forms for the past 2-3 months and his numbers improved DRAMATICALLY. We may need to reevaluate the Paleo + Dairy recommendation.
Dave says
correction: Triglycerides 128

Kevin,
From the other day, a question about ASTHMA. If you are having more than three attacks per week on vacation, a long-term controller medication is called for. It will actually reduce inflammation as opposed to just making the symptoms go away. I know this because my use of albuteral increased until I was taking it at least four times a day — finally read up on treatment, got on Symbicort, and then was able to gradually get off all medication (with paleo diet, too.) But I keep the Symbicort around in cause some environmental insult inflames my lungs again.
Also, I’ve been thinking about the woman with a podcast question who has a distended belly. It sounds like you solved her problem with the gluten in the supplement, but I just read about guar gum being a fiber which is difficult for some to digest. I have gotten some belly aches and swelling lately after going 100% paleo and replacing the yummy cream in my coffee with canned coconut milk with guar gum. It used to be used as a diet aid to give a sense of fullness, but was declared unsafe in large doses, according to http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-guar-gum.htm .
Anybody know where to get coconut milk without this stuff in it? My brands are organic from Vitamin Cottage!

I have been seriously flirting with RAW Milk in my normaly Paleo diet. I drink three half cups a day and feel great- no allergies this year (and what a heavy year it has been for others) and although I don’t train as heavy as I like, Im 58, twice a week with kettlebells and some Squats and Dead lifts, since the Raw milk I feel like I’m on ‘roids. I am totally pleased with the addition, it comes from a great farm. Okay the question: Everything I do is for my diabetes which since LC/Paleo/IF has been no short of a miracle. Great numbers all around but I am over due for more blood work. Just read about Welbourn dropping diary. Did he experience Raw milk by any chance. I will get back with my numbers but was wondering about your thoughts.
Robb Wolf says
pj-
it was raw milk. I’d ditch it.
Vanessa P says
I found a way to get coconut milk without the guar gum, but now I have to go find some fresh coconuts!

Robb,
Interesting…did that include taking out whey protein or is that still a go? Thanks for the response!

Just pre-ordered your book, can’t wait. Are you doing anything special for pre-orders (bonus or whatnot)?
John Durant was awesome on Colbert. Paleo > Veganism, and Five Fingers rock!
That “Bottle Rocket” looks delicious btw.

I will drink an extra NorCal Margarita in your honor!!

Robb don’t give in. Seriously. Enough people are going to buy the book because of your exposure and their long waiting for it to come out but seriously..I’m sure a number of Graphic Designers would do it for free just to have it on your book.
As a Graphic Designer I can attest to how much of a difference it makes when I grab a book off the shelf in the book store and the cover gets me interested or at least intrigued. I know most book readers will hate to agree with this but honestly, I won’t even pick up a book if the cover is horrendous. Come up with a good idea, a good way to get an image to portray the main theme of what your book is really saying and get an artist to roll with it!
Good luck. Don’t mistake my advice for bashing, I just can’t wait for your book and don’t want it to be the ugliest book on my bookshelf haha.
Robb Wolf says
Thanks George!!

Can anyone tell me where that delicious-looking “Bottle Rocket” creation came from in New York? I’m visiting NY and really want to go find one!

Hit up the kids at CrossFit South Brooklyn, they know the place.
